Reviews in San Francisco to Repair Cracked Heat Exchangers

A & H Heating
5.0
This company has a very honest approach, compared to two other companies I contacted. Given the same information, model number and serial number, they determined the heat exchanger was under warranty, my only cost would be labor. The original quote was for four hours. In the end they were prompt, arrived on time. Performed the work. Did it all with only two hours of labor. In the end, it did not cost $3000+ for a new furnace like the first company contacted. It did not cost the $800+ for parts and labor like the second company I contacted. All told, $160 labor.

AAA Furnace & Air Conditioning Co

The company attempted to sell a new furnace rather than repair the old one. My furnace was about 12 years old, with a 20 year warranty on the heat exchanger. They indicated the heat exchanger would cost over $1000 to replace, and it was simply best to replace the furnace for $3000+ depending upon model, but never gave a firm estimate for the heat exchanger or took the time to find out that it was under warranty and really would only cost the labor. I contacted A&H Heating, they took the model number and serial number, and in the end it cost me only $160 for labor. Although I spent $90 for AAA Furnace's time to provide the initial diagnosis.

I bought the service from Angie's List, then called the company and asked them to contact the tenant to arrange the time to do the service. The company made an appointment with the tenant and provided the service. They informed me about the progress and sent me the invoice on time. I have used this company for several times. They are professional and very easy to work with.

AIR MOVEMENT

Eric previously repaired my mother-in-law's furnace, so I was familiar with his work. I called him to perform a routine maintenance on my current gas furnace, which I had never had inspected since moving in about 8 years earlier. The furnace itself was 15 years old. He performed the inspection, and in the end, discovered a series of cracks in the heat exchanger. He was able to show me the cracks with a small camera he inserted into the exchanger. Because of the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning, he immediately took readings throughout the house and ascertained that there was not yet any measurable leakage. But he went out of his way to install a replacement on the first day I was available to have it done. The work took about 6 hours. He installed a high-efficiency heater, which required additional duct work, and it was all done very neatly, in a timely fashion. The cost was exactly what he said it would be, in fact, he never charged me for the original maintenance. He protected the tile floor in the laundry room where the heater is during the project and cleaned up beautifully afterwards. Because I couldn't be home when he finished, he graciously returned the next day to receive payment and give us some tips on the new furnace. Overall, he did a superlative job, and we were extremely happy with the result.

They were very responsive - Called at 11am, he was at my home 30min later. Upfront on the charges. He showed me the problem with my AC fan (it needed a new capacitor). He demonstated how changing the capacitor made the fan work. He did not have the right component in his truck and so he want back to the shop to get the right capacitor and the job was finished within 2 hours of my call.

Long's Heating & Air Conditioning
5.0
Long's Heating is the one we used for heating and AC. The guy we had really knew what he was doing. He was very thorough. He was very neat. He was very good. We are very pleased. He answered all of our questions. He was very nice. He was very thorough. He did the work as he promised. He came out one day and then we had to get a part and he came back and installed it. I was very, very pleased. I would give them an 'A' plus. We didn't get any other prices and we didn't mind paying it. We thought the price was reasonable. We saw them and they were highly rated on Angie's List and called them up. He was available and he came out. It wasn't an outrageous price, it was money, it wasn't cheap but I don't have anything to compare it to. I would go back there. I would guess that it wasn't relatively outrageously expensive. Somebody might have been cheaper but I can't imagine they could have been any better.

Very professional. Estimator was forthright and explained what needed to be done clearly and completely. Estimate provided was very fair and reasonable compared to other estimates obtained. Work crew arrived on-time, performed work promised at the rate promised. Re-routed exhaust flue from old location which was inappropriate at no additional charge. When complete, showed and explained work that was performed and explained functionality. Work crew was very polite, worked quickly and left the area clean. Insulation applied very neatly. Would definitely use again.

We needed to replace our Furnace due to cracks in the old heat exchanger. Steve from Tri-City came out to look at the house and the Furnace. He suggested the right furnace for our needs. The installation crew arrived on time and worked quickly but carefully to remove the old furnace and install the new one. Everything was done neatly and all joints were sealed with quality materials so there are no leaks. The cost was reasonable and the work was excellent quality.

Recent Review: AAA's estimator gave the most reasonable explanation about his recommendations. He made the point that the swing-down filter at the air return would increase noise vs. one installed outside in the garage above the furnace. AAA and one other company also recommended running some extra ductwork to increase the distance from the air return to quiet the system down. It was quoted by both as a separate add-on option, and AAA's quote was slightly cheaper. The pair from AAA arrived on time, were courteous, did the required work, and cleaned up afterward, including hauling away the old system. The job looks professionally done, and the system is indeed much quieter than what we had previously.

Recent Review: We are very happy with our new underfloor heating. Now our house is toasty and warm. I cannot fault the quality of the work. All members of the team were pleasant and easy to deal with. The job took longer to complete than we had anticipated but this was largely due to illness and foul weather. Paul was quick to respond when we encountered any issues and replaced the heat exchanger when it failed.

Recent Review: Seemed that the serviceman was not aware of all the fine print in the deal. I told him that there should be a $25 in repair credit towards the $89 service repair but he did not honor it. Also, he did not perform the Bonus: Safety check of furnace heat exchanger as the serviceman was not aware of it. I do hope next time they send a serviceman, the Company needs to inform their servicemen all the fine print in the deal.

Recent Review: Very well. The service technician, Sal, inspired confidence with his knowledge. He showed me the specific problem and explained that we could be breathing carbon monoxide. I used Angie's List to find several excellent companies to bid the new furnace. ABC's bid was very competitive. Bill, the salesman, spent time really understanding our needs and current issues. He offered ideas on how to better heat the living room which has always seemed cold in winter. Once we decided to go with ABC, they installed the new furnace within a few days. The installers, Robert and Ryan, arrived on time, were very professional and completed the work quickly. They left the house clean and neat. Although we haven't had really cold weather yet, the living room is much warmer.
