Dates[edit]

Hi, can you help? What is the difference between 19 October 1610 ( inserted with &n b s p; ) and 19 October 1610? And are there particular regulations for their use?. Sorry to disturb. Regards Denisarona (talk) 07:15, 19 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Software automatically breaks text strings to fit them into the screen of the device (computer, smartphone, whatever) used to view Wikipedia pages. Some people prefer some strings to stay as a whole, and   (non-breaking space) is the operator in Wikisoftware that prevents breaking the string at the place where   is inserted. See MOS:NBSP. I see no strict rules in the use of  . Materialscientist (talk) 08:06, 19 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

HEY!!!![edit]

Why did you change my edit!!! 64.129.1.45 (talk) 22:35, 19 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Name should match the article title. If the name has changed, better request renaming the article. Materialscientist (talk) 22:37, 19 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Also, do not use edit summaries like "fixing typo" when the edits do not match them. Materialscientist (talk) 22:40, 19 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

No.

Re: Edit to Spring Lament[edit]

Hi!

I didn't provide a source because my edit wasn't substantial. It was correcting an erroneous internal link to a modern province of China in an article about a T'ang-era poem, not providing new information that should require a source. Please consider reinstating my edit.

Thank you. 104.246.222.125 (talk) 07:21, 21 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Its going to need a bigger range block.[edit]

Hello, would you be able to block the entire /48 (Special:Contributions/2806:104E:18:0:0:0:0:0/48) for that IP? They've been at it since May, and been warned goodness only knows how many times (all but a handful of the IPs have had warnings posted). They seem to never use the same /64 twice in a row, so I don't think it will take long for them to dodge this block. Mako001 (C)  (T)  🇺🇦 08:12, 21 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Ronald I. Merkle[edit]

The spammer created three copies of the article on this person, all of which you deleted. My question is how the three copies differed from each other. Did the spammer use some sort of special space in one or two of them, or some character that looks like but is not a period, or was one of the I glyphs an Iota, or what? Robert McClenon (talk) 05:48, 23 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I thought that I knew about the gaming of titles, because I wrote that section of the guideline, but I don't know what the trick was here. I think that another sockpuppet will pop up and try something similar, so I would like to know what to look out for. Robert McClenon (talk) 05:48, 23 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Just a simple permutation of l (small L) and I (capital i); thus they could have created 8 articles. Materialscientist (talk) 07:34, 23 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

why ? you read you will get who own copyright[edit]

why did you change that i said allready this is not original Bhajan(song) traditional Hindu Bhajan written by Sri Lakshmanacharya in a religious text titled Shri Nama Ramayanam. Gandhi had nothing to do with the lyrics of this Bhajan. This bhajan was already popular among common folks (Hindu devotees) before him. However, only thing Gandhi did was - tempering the original lyrics - to suit his vested political interests. Below given is the Gandhi’s tempered version of this song: Who had given Gandhi the rights (in modern World we use terms like Intellectual Property Rights / Copy Rights.) to temper the original words and hence meaning of this Hindu devotional song? And popularizing the manipulated lyrics among innocent Hindus during the British Colonial era? Allah has nothing to do with Hinduism or Hindu culture. Can I temper the literary works of any of the author in today’s World? And can still go Scot-free? No, I wont be able to do…it. If I take the creative work of any other person and manipulate according to my vested interests - then I will be sued by the own of that creative work in the competent Courts of Law as per the Law of the Land & would be liable to penalty etc. Shree ram divoties (talk) 08:51, 28 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Legal threats and vandalism[edit]

Hello there, as an admin I was wondering if you could help me out. On the murder of Don Banfield article an IP address has been persistently vandalising and adding unreferenced content over the last day: [1], [2], [3], [4], [5]. This is despite several warnings from me and other users: [6], [7], [8], [9], [10], [11]. In addition, a serious legal threat was made where they said they were going to sue and get their solicitor: [12]. Reading WP:No legal threats it seems like this is quite a serious matter, and I don't think they are going to stop vandalising the article. The source (Nationaal Archief NL) is highly reputable, at least regarding Dutch photos. If they don't know the author, then, given that the photo is 84 years old, it is reasonable to believe that the author is unknown. Materialscientist (talk) 10:37, 3 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Wikipedia:Huggle[edit]

Is this safe for my PC? Jyoti Roy (talk) 11:06, 3 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@TTP1233: Sorry, I'm not Materialscientist, but I can help here: Huggle is an open-source program. This means that the source code is freely available, and anyone who can understand the code (which is rather a lot of people) can review it and check its safety, so it has no backdoors. It is doubtful that any exploits even exist, given that it is just a highly specialised web browser, which can only access the Wikipedia recent changes and ORES statistics and make edits to Wikipedia.
In short, yep, its safe for your PC, but if you are worried abput downloading stuff, you could try Wikipedia:SWViewer, which is a browser-based alternative. In any case, you will need rollback to use those tools. I hope this helps? Mako001 (C)  (T)  🇺🇦 12:18, 4 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Asura असूर्य asurya असुर[edit]

Asura means asurya, where there is no sun / light! Aditya is Surya and Daitya is Asurya. For Hindus today's assyria was the land of Asuras because the sun used to set there for them! After the Mediterranean Sea, the west is considered to be the Asur Lok! Even today the capital of ancient Assyria is Assur! Which was probably considered the capital of Asuras in the past! But it has a logical meaning that the darkness of space which is untouchable from the sun/surya is known as Asura, Bhagwati Kali means the power of kaal time! According to the Puranas themself, she seems to be fighting with the Asuras, which supports the fact that there are always two Shaktis/powers roaming in the universe, which is one Asurya, the other is the Surya, one is Brahman and the other is Abrahman. 2409:4051:2E8F:F844:0:0:D789:7C0E (talk) 10:12, 6 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Query[edit]

Hello, Materialscientist,

I was cleaning up edit summaries left by Cogswhat and I noticed he was also using IP accounts, one of which geolocated to Cupertino, CA. I often run into vandalism from IPs located in this city and I was wondering if these were connected to a sockpuppet farm. I'm not sure what you can tell me as a Checkuser but I have repeatedly run into this situation and I wondered if there is a SPI case that I could report this to when I come across it. It's like we have a vandal from Santiago, Chile, another in Italy and Moscow, it would be nice to have a place to report these incidents when I run into them. Thanks! Liz Read! Talk! 05:56, 9 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

In short, cities are too big for generalizing such activities, and the start of school year has brought a regular wave of vandalism, such as that from Cogswhat. A usual way of dealing with them is revert, block and move on. That said, it is easy to spot an experienced vandal from their edit pattern, and I do sometimes run checkuser on them, Cogswhat included. Filing an SPI would require a solid evidence of socking, and I don't know its backlog state (I don't patrol SPI). So, a quicker way would be to leave a note on this talk. Using a template like {{user|Cogswhat}} is appreciated, as it quickly leads to handy links related to the account or IP in question. Best wishes. Hi,

This is Sarah.

TY for not allowing the hate on my page.

I didn't know until two days ago I even had a Wikipedia entry but I am very aware of the massive controversy that surrounds my work in the US and Ukraine.

There is a significant amount of information from other sources missing out of my profile including from Croatia, Iran and the specifics on the books I published (all third party, verified, large sources). May I add it myself to clean it up?

TY,

Restoration of revision to Code of Hammurabi‎[edit]

Hey! I'm going to undo your revert, but more heavily cite it. There isn't any continued controversy on the understanding of the material of the Hammurabi Stele. I'm definitely working to avoid WP:NOR here but the stele is unambiguously basalt (speaking as a volcanologist), and essentially every modern publication refers to it as such. The stone itself vesicular, which is completely mutually exclusive with any possibility it's diorite. The "balanced" argument is weighing a discussion from the 1920s against present scholarship, and those speculations as to the material were not from experts in said material, which plenty 1 2 3 of contemporary sources observe. Essentially the only claims that the code of Hammurabi is diorite are around a century old. It's not heavy handed to remove misinformation from an article, even well-intentioned misinformation.

And hello from one material scientist (on the mineral physics side of things) to another!

Also, just an aside to go wildly into WP:NOR territory privately, feel free to take a look at the photos of the stele from the Louvre. Diorite is an intrusive igneous rock which cools over geological timescales and which is in large part defined by the presence of large (average 1 cm) crystals which comprise the entire thing. Basalt is an extrusive rock, c.f. unresolvable individual crystallites on the high-resolution images from the Louvre. Essentially the first order approximation, for a material scientist, is "did this cool slow enough to allow the formation fo ~1cm crystals or was it quenched?" Since the texture of the Hammurabi stele is aphanitic, and it is volcanic in origin, it must be one of the extrusive igneous rocks, which rules out diorite.

But again, trying to avoid any of that in my edits, because, obviously, WP:NOR.

revert[edit]

Please can you explain why you reverted those reverts? Ithought I was reverting vandalism. -- L10nM4st3r (talk) 09:10, 12 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Europe uses dmy date format. You were reverting mdy -> dmy change in European articles. Cheers. Materialscientist (talk) 09:17, 12 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Not the first time I made a mistake like this (a link of my big mistakes can be found on the bottom of my userpage). I'll try to be a bit more careful in the future :) -- L10nM4st3r (talk) 09:21, 12 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Happy First Edit Day![edit]

Empty categories[edit]

Hello, Materialscientist,

As you likely know, empty categories are tagged speedy deletion, CSD C1, and then sit for 7 days in Category:Empty categories awaiting deletion. This is because empty categories are often only empty temporarily and sometimes they are emptied "out of process" and those edits that emptied them need to be reverted. There is really no reason to delete them early unless the category creator requests CSD G7 deletion or there are problems like copyright violations or some similar inappropriate content. So, please let them sit for a week.

There are plenty of pages that do need to be deleted that show up on [[:Category:Candidates for speedy deletion] and we could use help patrolling these categories. Thank you! Liz Read! Talk! 03:01, 15 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

September 2022[edit]

Hello, I'm the user you yelled at. I noticed that you yelled at me on my talk page for my in-progress work on The Amazing Race Canada 2, you reverted my edit while claiming it was not explained despite their being an explanation in the edit summary. In the future, it would be helpful to not just randomly jump into a group of pages where work is ongoing to change the format of the page and leave reverts and warnings without taking a moment to understand the circumstances, and to not claim something is "unexplained" when it is explained. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, I don't care, because this is exactly the reason why I'm soon going to stop bothering to contribute to Wikipedia until it fixes its problems with elitism, with people like you constantly stomping on the little people who are just trying to help. 2604:3D08:7481:AF00:9833:C2AD:CCCE:D0E6 (talk) 12:03, 24 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

That blocked user talk page[edit]

Is it acceptable to just delete it entirely, or should revdel be liberally applied? Or just leave it? ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 23:26, 27 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Not sure what user, but basically its your admin judgement, guidelines are vague. Materialscientist (talk) 23:30, 27 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'm getting tired of asking this, but this one makes no sense, there was nothing wrong with it. EDIT: It was also sourced, which made it make even less sense. Eteled286 (talk) 21:38, 29 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Feedback required[edit]

Hi @Materialscientist,

There is an argument going on in my talk page, and to prevent things from escalating, I wanted your feedback on the topic. Some context: I recently placed a notice in 3 people's talk page saying that they should use edit summaries as I saw their edit summary was less than 60%. One of those editors responded in my talk page and accused me of giving misleading warnings. I am wondering how a friendly reminder is a warning, so intense that the said editor had to accuse me. Furthermore, they were justifying their low edit summary percentage by saying that you don't always need to use summaries, while the template itself says to always use edit summaries. One other thing is that the said editor had been a concern of many other user's disputes, and their behaviour has been termed as a WP:Bully. Please look over at my talk page and give some feedback and decide who is in the wrong here. Thanks & Welcome. Raydann (talk) 06:41, 30 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

WWF The Music, Volume 2[edit]

Greetings. Just thought I'd ask a favour, and I never normally bypass RPP. You semi-protected WWF Full Metal: The Album for a lengthy period, which is very helpful and appears to have nullified the constant vandalism by Mcclian's IPs. However, he continues to make the same hoax edits at WWF The Music, Volume 2 at a similarly continual rate (see edit history since 2018). I tried recently to get PP for it, but was denied for "not enough recent activity", which is a total cop-out considering the vandalism has been ongoing for year after year. I don't suppose you could give it the same extended PP as the aforementioned WWE Full Metal? All the best, Mac Dreamstate (talk) 19:43, 1 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Vichare[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Vichare, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion, by which pages can be deleted at any time, without discussion. If the page meets any of these strictly-defined criteria, then it may soon be deleted by an administrator. The reasons it has been tagged are:

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. IndyNotes (talk) 20:40, 10 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Don't worry MatSci, I'm sure you'll get the hang of this article writing thing one of these days! (IndyNotes, the article in question was a redirect that was overwritten today with a single unsourced sentence, I restored the redirect in place of deletion) GeneralNotability (talk) 20:44, 10 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Assistance with the Chekavar page[edit]

Greetings @Materialscientist, hope you are doing well! If you have a moment to spare, please have a look at the Chekavar page. The Ezhava main page has had a lengthy debate regarding the position of Thiyyas and Chekavars (Chekavar being a title of the Thiyya community, and Thiyyas themselves being part of the Ezhava community). This was consensually placed into the lead paragraph at Ezhava, and Thiyyas do not have a separate Wikipedia page because of this. However, a few editors have been attempting to place the Chekavar as a separate "warrior caste," based on the amateur notes of visitors who passed through the region at the time. This goes against what has been agreed upon in the main Ezhava page (Talk:Ezhava) and the references cited there. Furthermore, the user has placed titles starting with lowercase, so grammatically it is wrong as well.

Please have a look if time permits, thank you :) TheWanderer9 (talk) 12:52, 11 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

IP blocks[edit]

Hi there. Could you please extend the block of IPs from Special Communications Organization to include these? These are just another two from the range that already includes *.249, *.124 and *.104.
