Howard Air
I invited quotes from three Phoenix metro area HVAC firms. One was a firm I have done business with in the past. Oddly enough, given the recession, they never followed up. The second was one of the largest HVAC firms in this area. The third was Howard Air. I received a bid from the second and third firms, the pricing was comparable and, hence, not a determining factor in my selection process. I was more interested in quality of service and customer-friendly business philosophy than price. The salesmen for both companies that bid were excellent, although I would have to say that Matt Callahan from Howard Air had the edge due to his warm, thoughtful approach to the business and inherent trustworthiness. I checked out all three companies with BBB and Angie's List. All three had A+ ratings at BBB, which means that they had resolved all customer complaints received at BBB in the past 36 months, BUT, while two of them had a lot of complaints, Howard Air had none - zero! - submitted to BBB. That means that Howard Air either did everything right the first time or, if not, then made things right with their customers without forcing them to resort to a third party for dispute resolution. When I thought of all the time and agony that the other firms put their customers thru by not fixing complaints on their own, I saw a huge plus in doing business with Howard Air. The reports on Angie's list told a much truer story on customer satisfaction than BBB.. Howard Air has a perfect rating of all A's by almost a hundred customers, while the other firms only rated B's! Thank you, Angie! The installation was completed on time as promised, the removal of the old equipment and the clean-up afterwards were all done to delight the customer. Ten days after the installation, Forrest, the chief technical person at Howard Air, came out with Matt to inspect and sign off on the installation. Everything was done perfectly, and I could not be happier with my decision to use this company

Got 4 estimates to replace my furnace and air conditioner. G&H was best price by far. Michael did the complete install by himself in about a day and 1/2. There was a problem with the selinoid for the AprilAire humidifier and Michael spent as much time as needed to correct, very responsive. I recommend G&H both for their quality of work, responsiveness and price

Everything that they did was a good job. I wasn't very satisfied with the heat pump, it isn't good for my part of the country, and wouldn't recommend using a heat pump. Overall, they were very courteous and tentative, but I didn't like that they had me sign up for a yearly maintenance package, which is probably the industry standard

The air conditioner has a heat pump on it and when it would kick on and off it made an awful noise so they came out and made adjustments. I'm quite happy with the heat pump. I don't understand how it work because it takes the air from outside, heat that air and blows it through out the house. They didn't charge me anything for the adjustment

When they came into install they did not have permit or know what regulations were for condos. The heat pump did not work right in the summer when installed I had to turn it off completely to make the air conditioning come on. Each time they would come out to fix it they say it was the wrong themostat. That was about 6 times! When winter came there was no heat. Again, saying it was installed correctly ( does it really sound like it was installed correctly?) I was going to be charged to fix the problem on this brand new unit. They did not stand behind their workmanship or the product they installed. I was told "we don't claim to be the experts with heat pumps." which was pretty obvious. They aren't very good with the customer service either

Northern's One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning
Brad was on time and very professional. However, the receptionist said the estimate would take 1 and a half hours but ended up taking 3 hours. He didn't leave until almost 7:00 p.m. and our kids were hungry and cranky. We also didn't like that the furnace they suggested was oversized for our house. When I called to inform them that we had chosen another heating company because we decided to get a heat pump instead of an air conditioner, Brad said that he wished that we had told him we were considering a heat pump and they would have included that in the quote. We chose to go with another company because they gave us quotes for all of our options even though we had not mentioned wanting a heat pump. I figured that was Northern's mistake for not including all options at the time of the quote

It took three attempts to actually get the unit installed due to "structural" issues in my building. I live on the second floor of an old two-story brick apartment building with radiator heat. During the first attempt, the exterior unit wouldn't fit through the roof access so I had to review where it would be located and have them reschedule (it is now located on the ground next to the building). During the second attempt, the installer was not aware there were steel plates in the wall above the windows (old brick building) until after an installation hole had been drilled in the LR/DR and the steel plate was hit. We had to post-pone installation that day because I needed to reconsider where the interior wall units could be installed. On the third attempt we were successful!!! The head in the DR was able to be installed on an interior wall, and the head in the BR was able to be installed above the windows AND above the steel plate, without compromising the crown molding. The installer and assistant were very good at the installation, even though they may not have been familiar with the building structure. I was only able to give a B for quality because we later discovered there was a problem with the 'wiring' of the interior heads. I have two heads inside and one compressor/heat pump outside. During installation, the wiring for the refrigerant signal for the interior units was crossed (I guess this is not that uncommon). When the unit in the BR was turned on, the fan came on in the BR, but the refrigerant was activated in the DR, and vice versa. This was discovered because I turned on the BR unit, and I thought it worked fine. The next morning I decided to turn on the DR unit, and water came out of it. so I immediately turned that one off. I called for service and by the time the tech and I could sync up our schedules, the exterior unit and the DR interior unit were iced up. Because of the ice, the tech wasn't able to do anything, and couldn't really even tell what was wrong. I had to get schedule a separate appointment while waiting for the units to deice. The tech that came immediately recognized the problem, and it was quickly rectified. Both units are now working beautifully! Although I had this little problem, I would still recommend Pronto. Throughout the multiple visits the estimator, installers and techs made to my home, they were very conscious of my time and were extremely prompt. They were careful with my belongings, and did an excellent job of cleaning up after themselves. I think there were a lot of factors at play here that no one was aware of when it came to the physical placement of the units, and I can't blame anyone for that. Definitely recommend Pronto

Our greatest consideration is the quality and the reliability of the product and its installation. The installers, Jared and Justin did a great job. They also were very professional and anticipated all the possible variables to consider when placing the heating/cooling heads. They arrived just when they said they would. The installation took almost three full days. My wife commented when they left that she could see the value we received for the money we paid

Absolutely wonderful experience. If you are looking for someone with real experience with duct work and HVAC who will be honest and upfront with you, I have the company for you. Tom loves to let you know the details of everything he is doing or proposes to do. He is the duct whisperer. If you have heat (winter) or cooling (summer) problems on your 2nd floor, it is most likely your airflow. Don't listen to the sales people that promise a new furnace with a big fan will fix your problem. It won't. We tried that. Tom can rework your duct so that proper airflow can occur. I can feel the temperature difference, and can sleep at night without sweating myself to sleep. For the short time we were using gas this spring, our gas usage was cut in half. Because of the 2 stage air conditioner, I expect the electricity usage to be lower too during the summer. We suffered for 19 years with heating and cooling problems. They are gone now. No more humidity problems in the basement too since the air now circulates and is dehumidified by the air conditioner. Tom made sure that *every* room in the house had good air flow. For air quality, Tom installed a hospital grade Hepa filter, air purifier, and put in a better filter for the furnace. We breathe easier and have confidence in the air quality and fewer virus issues. He had custom metalwork done for the furnace for the air return and furnace stand. All designed beautifully and functional. The new thermostat is a work of art. For the people averse to paperwork, Tom filled out all of the paperwork for the rebates and warranties. All we had to do was cash the checks when they came. The city inspectors were impressed with the quality of the work. He went far above and beyond what we have encountered previously with a furnace and a/c install. He even discovered, fixed, and cleaned up our dryer vent as part of his service (which most possibly save us from having a dryer vent fire). It took a day of hot, sweaty work to clean up the mess and he could have passed off to someone else but didn't. The dryer vent should have been cleaned by the duct cleaners like they promised, but wasn't. He was here when he said he would be, and he sent email ahead of time detailing what he was going to do. He cleaned up every day and talked us through what was accomplished that day. Best communication ever. Best experience ever. Seriously. Call him

He was patient and thorough and willing to meet with my cabinet maker to help solve a design problem. He ran his plan by the inspector to make sure everything was up to code. Did a great job removing an old radiator and mounting a new one on the opposite wall. He was very prompt in answering my calls

He had good recommendations and promised they would work with us to get it done right. We had three bids and DeZiel offered the best price, most flexibility and seemed like it would be the easiest to work with. They walked through the entire project with us prior to any installation so we could figure out the best place for the registers, returns and ductwork and make sure it all worked for our floorplan. Jeff, Doug, and Artie did a great job with the installation - everything went forward on schedule and they took some last minute changes we wanted in stride. Quote: Not as impressed with the salesman as others. Probably due to the large amount of jobs he had to quote, but it seemed he just wanted to hurry up and pick a unit to quote and leave. He informed me that the AC units didn't get the tax credit unless I bought a new furnace. But after he left, I did my own research on the product and found that their heat pumps do get the tax credit and (with the credit) I could get a much better quality heat pump for the same price as their lowest quality AC and get the added utility cost benefit. I called the salesman back and he agreed that he missed that and quoted me a heat pump, but he quoted a non-programable thermistat and didn't ask if I wanted a programable thermistat, which I do. He tried to talk me out of it, but then conceded and revised his quote. In the end, I had to do my own product research and selection and educate myself, which I suppose is a good thing and what I should have been doing anyway. Moral of the story, don't just assume this sales guy will pick the right solution for you. Scheduling: After a week of waiting I called for a status update and found out that the unit was backordered due to the high volume. After another week of waiting I found out that the part number was no longer being made. So he said they were giving me an upgrade to a better unit for the same price, which was fine by me. Installation: 3 weeks after the quote I got my heat pump installed. The two installers were fantastic. They were professional, friendly, and as far as I can tell they did a great job. They came in and went straight to work and didn't stop until the job was done. Very impressed! Overall: I'm obviously satisfied since I got a better unit than I originally ordered and the installation went perfect. I'd use them again but I'd make sure I did my own product research before bringing the salesman in
