This Clinical Research position is located in the Research and Development Service of the Veterans Administration Portland Health Care Systems (VAPORHCS) in Portland, Oregon. Position Summary

We are a seeking motivated, independent, and experienced candidate for a full-time Research Program Manager position to assist a Principal Investigator (PI) in the VA Center to Improve Veteran Involvement in Care (CIVIC) with multiple research projects intended to advance the prevention and treatment of common and significant mental health issues and conditions that affect Veterans. Responsibilities

  • Managing day-to-day study activities and achieving study milestones to meet project objectives

VHA’s Homeless Programs Office is seeking one individual to serve in a detail capacity for up to 120 days with potential for an extension beginning in October 2022.  The assignment is appropriate for a GS-13 level employee who will serve as a Health Science Specialist, National Center on Homelessness among Veterans (NCHAV), VHA Homeless Programs Office, under the supervision of the NCHAV Research Director.

(09/06/22) Health Sciences Research Assistant/Specialist, EPIC3 Study - Seattle, WA



Are you interested in helping to improve the health and healthcare of our United States Veterans through meaningful work in a collaborative environment? Are you interested in utilizing your professional skills as part of a government organization? The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Cooperative Studies Program (CSP) is a nationally renowned program that produces innovative solutions to Veteran and national healthcare problems through multi-site research studies.

The VA CSP Seattle Epidemiologic Research and Information Center (ERIC) is hiring a full-time Research Assistant/Specialist. The Research Assistant/Specialist will support a multi-site observational study, CSP #2028: Epidemiology, Immunology, and Clinical Characteristics of COVID-19 (EPIC3) within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA).

The aim of the study is to gather longitudinal data on the epidemiology, virology, immunology and clinical characteristics of the COVID-19 disease and SARS-CoV-2 infections to answer key research questions about their natural history and clinical outcomes, and to better anticipate and manage pandemics in the future. The Seattle ERIC manages the overall administration and coordination of the study across 15 study sites nationwide. The Research Assistant/Specialist position will support study site staff in compliance with the study protocol and operations manual, participant contact will be minimal. 

The Research Assistant will provide operational support under the direction of the Study Project Manager.

Key duties include the following:

  • Maintain standard operating procedures, databases, research records, and study materials
  • Serve as liaison with investigators, site personnel, consultants, and contractors
  • Ensure compliance with study protocol, including informed consent, safety, and data security requirements
  • Work closely with the EPIC3 coordinating team and study sites to ensure effective collaboration and maintain accurate data capture
  • Monitor subject recruitment and data collection activities at sites and take corrective action when required
  • Track study progress at sites, identify deficiencies, and recommend solutions

The ESP is seeking a Data Visualization and Information (DVI) Specialist to examine and interpret findings of narrative and/or quantitative evidence syntheses (ie, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and related research products) and produce appealing visualizations that effectively facilitate reader understanding of, and engagement with, those findings. The VET Registry is a collection of data from over 14,000 Vietnam-Era Veteran twins and more than 3,400 selected family members. That data comes from more than 30 studies and includes biospecimens from over 1,800 individuals. These data are used in research studies to understand factors that affect the health and well-being of Veterans.

The NVVLS Registry is a collection of data from over 2,300 Vietnam-Era Veterans, obtained over two data collection timepoints: the National Vietnam Veterans Readjustment Study (NVVRS) in 1984 and the National Vietnam Veterans Longitudinal Study (NVVLS) in 2012. The Seattle ERIC acquired stewardship of the NVVRS and NVVLS data in 2015, and modified it to function as the NVVLS Registry, which includes 1,450 Veterans who participated in both timepoints.    

The Research Assistant will provide operational support under the direction of the Vietnam-Era Registries Program Manager. 

Key duties:

  • Working with the Vietnam-Era Registries team to support day-to-day operational activities
    • Assisting with the development of recruitment materials
    • Assisting with IRB documentation including completing applications, organizing, and filing records

Investigators will be expected to secure VA Merit, foundation, and/or NIH sponsored research funding. The hired investigators will also be expected to assume administrative leadership positions as the Assistant Director of the Research Core or the Clinical Core. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Cooperative Studies Program (CSP) produces innovative solutions to Veteran and national healthcare problems through multi-site research studies.

The Seattle Epidemiologic Research and Information Center (ERIC) is hiring a full-time Research Assistant. The Research Assistant will support the Vietnam-Era Twin (VET) Registry and the National Vietnam Veterans Longitudinal Study (NVVLS) Registry, collectively named the Vietnam-Era Registries.

The VET Registry is a collection of data from over 14,000 Vietnam-Era Veteran twins and more than 3,400 selected family members. That data comes from more than 30 studies and includes biospecimens from over 1,800 individuals. These data are used in research studies to understand factors that affect the health and well-being of Veterans.

The NVVLS Registry is a collection of data from over 2,300 Vietnam-Era Veterans, obtained over two data collection timepoints: the National Vietnam Veterans Readjustment Study (NVVRS) in 1984 and the National Vietnam Veterans Longitudinal Study (NVVLS) in 2012. The Seattle ERIC acquired stewardship of the NVVRS and NVVLS data in 2015, and modified it to function as the NVVLS Registry, which includes 1,450 Veterans who participated in both timepoints.    

The Research Assistant will provide operational support under the direction of the Vietnam-Era Registries Program Manager. 

Key duties:

  • Working with the Vietnam-Era Registries team to support day-to-day operational activities
    • Assisting with the development of recruitment materials
    • Assisting with IRB documentation including completing applications, organizing, and filing records
    • Assisting with the development and maintenance of standard operating procedures
  • Engaging with Registry members and maintaining the infrastructure of the Registries
    • Maintaining and updating databases containing individually identifiable information and vital statuses on Registry members
    • Communicating with Registry members via telephone and mail
  • Conducting recruitment activities for NIH-funded studies and CSP-initiated projects
    • Conducting initial recruitment telephone calls to enroll subjects in research
    • Assembling informational and initial recruitment mailing packets to research subjects
    • Maintaining and updating study databases, and tracking study progress
    • Performing quality checks on data entry and recruitment activities
  • Serving as a liaison between the Vietnam-Era Registries and key stakeholders
    • Working closely with the Vietnam-Era Registries team, other ERIC teams, lab personnel, oversight bodies, and external researchers and study site staff to ensure effective collaboration and to meet study objectives
    • Engaging with researchers and study participants requesting information on the repositories

Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in a scientific- or health-related field required
  • 1-2 years of related work experience in clinical, epidemiological, or health services research preferred
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate with a diverse group of VA and university researchers and staff
  • Experience with customer service, particularly by telephone
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Solid problem-solving and critical thinking skills

Potential candidates will be PhD (or similar doctoral degree) investigators with expertise in mathematical statistical and/or biostatistical methods. They will participate in CHOIR health services research across its many constituent fields. Cooperative Studies Program (CSP) is recruiting for a Project Manager at one of their Clinical Trials Coordinating Centers. This position will be located at the VA Medical Center in Hines, Illinois (in the Chicagoland area). CSP is a Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Office of Research & Development (ORD) supported national clinical investigation program that is comprised of a network of centers and investigators. The program is responsible for the planning and conduct of large, multi-center trials in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

The Project Manager is responsible for providing administrative support and coordination for studies that vary in length of time, number of participating sites and number of research subjects for the Hines Cooperative Studies Program Coordinating Center (CSPCC). They coordinate interaction and cooperation between the research study site investigators, site coordinators, the CSPCC, the Study Chairpersons, the Albuquerque Research Pharmacy (CSPCRPCC), any outside funding agencies and any technical support facilities required for the studies.

The incumbent will serve as a resource person regarding details of the study protocol and facilitates training for study personnel to ensure they follow the study protocol and data collection procedures. They assist in the development and distribution of the study operations manual and draft study correspondence and ensure that appropriate tasks and study documentation are completed in the sequence established by CSP. The Project Manager prepares agendas and materials for study meetings in consultation with study team and participates in study conference calls and attends study meetings. They serve as a recorder of minutes and prepares draft reports of meetings, when needed. The incumbent serves as primary liaison with all participating study sites in securing both initial and yearly approvals from Institutional Review Board of record and Research & Development Committees. They maintain documentation of the Study Group, Executive Committee, Data Monitoring Committee and HRC reports. The PM reviews all budget requests for accuracy and evaluates special requests for budgetary increases, makes recommendations and monitor’s expenditures of study funds to ensure the study is within budget.  The Project Manager receives and manages the distribution of the site monitoring reports and site audit responses to sites, CSP offices, Study Chairpersons, and any necessary outside agencies and assists in the quality assurance process for assigned studies and responsible for maintenance of the study Central Study File per GCP requirements.  They assist site personnel in maintaining site documentation in compliance with GCP and VA requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Baccalaureate degree in a science or health-related field, e.g., biology, chemistry, psychology, public health is minimum requirement, but advanced degree is preferred such as a MS or MPH. The advanced degree can be in another field such as project management if the baccalaureate degree fulfills the minimum requirement.
  • Able to oversee the day-to-day function of a multi-site study and to independently deal with many of the challenges that arise.
  • Able to work independently and prioritize numerous demands and deal with myriad of complex challenges
  • Knowledge and skill in the application of related laws, regulations, policies, precedents, methods, and project management of clinical trials.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Clinical research experience preferred
