ABC News presents special coverage celebrating the life and legacy of Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away earlier today at age 96. “World News Tonight” anchor David Muir and “Good Morning America” co-anchor Robin Roberts will anchor live from London Friday, Sept. 9, beginning on “Good Morning America” and continuing with Muir on “World News Tonight” with ABC News correspondents and contributors reporting on the ground from London and Scotland.

ABC News will air three primetime specials Thursday, Sept. 8, and Friday, Sept. 9:  

  • Anchored by “Good Morning America” co-anchor and “This Week” anchor George Stephanopoulos, “Queen Elizabeth II: The Legacy, The Life,” a live, one-hour special paying tribute to the monarch, airs Thursday, Sept. 8 (8:00-9:00 p.m. EDT), on ABC and streams next day on Hulu.
  • “Queen Elizabeth II: A Royal Life – A Special Edition of 20/20” airs Thursday, Sept. 8 (9:00-11:00 p.m. EDT), on ABC and streams next day on Hulu. The two-hour special takes an in-depth look at her 70-year reign and details how she ascended the throne, her love story with the late Prince Philip, her family and grandchildren, the aftermath following the death of Princess Diana, and her history with the United States and world leaders, with reporting from Muir, senior national affairs correspondent Deborah Roberts and “GMA3” and “20/20” co-anchor Amy Robach. The special features interviews with those who knew and loved her most – Prince William, Prince Harry and some of her other grandchildren.  
  • Muir will anchor a two-hour, live primetime special from London reporting on the tributes throughout the day and looking ahead to the upcoming celebration of life. The special airs Friday, Sept. 9 (9:00-11:00 p.m. EDT), on ABC and streams next day on Hulu.

ABC News’ “Nightline” ranked No. 1 in Total Viewers (658,000) and Adults 25-54 (195,000) during the week of Aug. 29, 2022, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. In addition, “Nightline” beat CBS’ “The Late Late Show is James Corden” in Adults 18-49.

“Nightline” improved week to week in Adults 25-54 (+15% - 195,000 vs. 170,000) to its strongest performance in 11 weeks — since w/o 6/13/22.

“Nightline” saw gains on the same week last year in Adults 25-54 (+17% - 195,000 vs. 167,000) and Adults 18-49 (+2% - 135,000 vs. 133,000).

Season to date, “Nightline” is beating CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49 for the 7th consecutive year — since the 2015-2016 season.

This week, “Nightline” covered rapper DoItAll (Dupre Kelly) on becoming a city council member; Serena Williams at the U.S. Open; social media account Depth of Wikipedia; Afghanistan under Taliban control; Kidz Bop and the label’s long-awaited tour and 20-year history of musical covers; former NFL player Matt Araiza, who spoke out against rape accusations; obstruction of justice allegations amid Trump investigation; new documentary, “Katrina Babies”; Olympian Lolo Jones; and as a part of ABC News’ “Uvalde: 365” commitment, the Uvalde community honoring state champions 50 years later, Uvalde 1970 walkout members who see history repeating itself, and Uvalde high school’s first home football game of the season.

“This Week with George Stephanopoulos” averaged 2.423 million Total Viewers and 475,000 Adults 25-54 on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2022, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “This Week” beat NBC’s “Meet the Press” in Total Viewers and outdelivered CBS’ “Face the Nation” in Adults 25-54.

Season to date, “This Week” is ranking No. 1 in Adults 25-54, leading CBS’ “Face the Nation” and NBC’s “Meet the Press” at this point of the season for the first time in 7 years — since the 2014-2015 season. In addition, “This Week” is beating CBS’ “Face the Nation” by its largest Adults 25-54 lead in 22 years — since 1999-2000 season.

“This Week” is leading NBC’s “Meet the Press” in Total Viewers season to date for the first time in 8 years, with its largest lead in 25 years — since the 2013-2014 and the 1996-1997 seasons, respectively. In addition, “This Week” is cutting its Total Viewers season margin with “Face the Nation” by 22% (261,000 vs. 334,000) to its smallest gap in 12 years — since the 2009-2010 season.

“Good Morning America” stood as the No. 1 morning newscast in Total Viewers (3.088 million), Adults 25-54 (750,000) and Adults 18-49 (501,000) for the 4th straight week for the week of Aug. 29, 2022, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “GMA” led in Adults 25-54 for the 8th straight week and for the 16th time in the last 18 weeks.

“GMA” outperformed “Today” (2.718 million, 706,000 and 479,000, respectively) by 370,000 Total Viewers, by 44,000 Adults 25-54 and by 22,000 Adults 18-49. “GMA” increased its lead over the NBC program from the previous week in Total Viewers (+24%; vs. 299,000).

“GMA” saw across-the-board increases week to week: Total Viewers (+5% - 3.088 million vs. 2.950 million), Adults 25-54 (+10% - 750,000 vs. 684,000) and Adults 18-49 (+2% - 501,000 vs. 489,000), hitting a 3-month high in the key Adult news demo — since w/o 5/30/22.

Season to date, “GMA” (3.262 million) is ranking as the No. 1 morning newscast in Total Viewers for the 10th year in a row, more than doubling its lead over NBC’s “Today” (3.026 million) at the same point last season (+129% - 236,000 vs. 103,000) to its largest in 7 years — since the 2014-2015 season.

In addition, “GMA” is cutting its season margin with “Today” in Adults 25-54 by more than half (-64% - 31,000 vs. 86,000) to its closest performance in 7 years — since the 2014-2015 season.

During the week, “GMA” (3.088 million, 750,000 and 501,000, respectively) beat “CBS Mornings” (2.368 million, 538,000 and 337,000, respectively) in Total Viewers (+720,000), Adults 25-54 (+212,000) and Adults 18-49 (+164,000).

NOTE: On Friday (9/3/21), “CBS Mornings” was retitled to “CBS Morn” and “Today” was retitled to “Today-TS” due to the Labor Day weekend. “World News Tonight with David Muir” stood as the No. 1 program of the week in Total Viewers (7.449 million) on all of television (excluding sports) during the week of Aug. 29, 2022, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “World News Tonight” has ranked as the week’s No. 1 program for 21 weeks in a row (excluding sports).

“World News Tonight” finished as the No. 1 evening newscast in all of broadcast and cable in Total Viewers (7.449 million), Adults 25-54 (1.275 million) and Adults 18-49 (847,000), outperforming “NBC Nightly News” (6.158 million, 980,000 and 656,000, respectively) by 1.291 million Total Viewers, by 295,000 Adults 25-54 and by 191,000 Adults 18-49. In addition, “World News Tonight” widened its advantage over the NBC program week to week in Total Viewers (+12%; vs. 1.157 million) and Adults 25-54 (+23%; vs. 239,000).

“World News Tonight” has won the last 196 of 197 weeks in Total Viewers and 125 of the last 127 in Adults 25-54.

“World News Tonight” posted gains from the previous week in Total Viewers (+3%/+223,000 - 7.449 million vs. 7.228 million) and Adults 25-54 (+4%/+50,000 - 1.275 million vs. 1.225 million), standing as the only evening newscast to see increases in both measures.

Season to date, “World News Tonight” (8.175 million) is ranking No. 1 in Total Viewers for the 6th consecutive year, based on Most Current Data. “World News Tonight” is leading “NBC Nightly News” (6.895 million) by 1.280 million and “CBS Evening News” (4.956 million) by 3.219 million.

“World News Tonight” is ranking No. 1 in Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49 for the 3rd season in a row. “World News Tonight” is surpassing NBC in both Adults 25-54 (+277,000 - 1.479 million vs. 1.202 million) and Adults 18-49 (+169,000 – 1.014 million vs. 845,000).  In fact, “World News Tonight” is posting its largest Adults 25-54 lead in 27 years — since the 1994-1995 season.
