The employment–population ratio—the proportion of the population that is employed—was 60.0 percent in July 2022 for people age 16 and older. The July 2022 ratio remains below its value just before the pandemic in February 2020 (61.2 percent).

Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 528,000 in July 2022, larger than the average monthly gain over the prior 4 months (+388,000). Job growth was widespread in July, led by gains in leisure and hospitality, professional and business services, and health care.

Nonfarm payroll employment increased in 129 metropolitan areas and was essentially unchanged in 260 areas from June 2021 to June 2022. The largest over-the-year percentage gain in employment occurred in Atlantic City-Hammonton, New Jersey, at 12.5 percent.

There were 54,750 nonfatal work-related transportation incidents involving one or more days away from work in 2020, down from 64,210 in 2019. There were also fewer fatal work-related transportation incidents in 2020 (1,778 deaths) than in 2019 (2,122 deaths).

Job openings decreased by 605,000 to 10.7 million on the last business day of June 2022. Hires and total separations were little changed at 6.4 million and 5.9 million, respectively.
