Unattended cooking is the number one cause of home fires.

A couple sitting on the couch in their apartment. There is a smoke alarm beeping from across the hall. One of the couple says, "Sigh. Sounds like Katheryn is cooking again. What is she doing over there?" In Kathryn's apartment, she is in a pirate ship fighting sentient asparagus which is also in a pirate ship. Kathryn shouts, "You can't run asparagus!" The text reads: Sometimes cooking is an adventure. Keep the batteries in your smoke alarm. Make sure it's far enough from your kitchen to not be a nuisance. Always stand by your pan. Unattended cooking is the number one cause of home fires.

Portable generators can produce enough carbon monoxide to kill a family in minutes. If you know anyone who has lost power and are using a portable generator to keep the lights on, make sure they also have working carbon monoxide alarms in their home.

Deaths due to carbon monoxide poisoning can occur after a natural disaster as portable generators are deployed to provide power. People may not be thinking clearly, and set the generator up too close to their home/shelter.
