Nonfarm payroll employment increased in 129 metropolitan areas and was essentially unchanged in 260 areas from June 2021 to June 2022. The largest over-the-year percentage gain in employment occurred in Atlantic City-Hammonton, New Jersey, at 12.5 percent.

There were 54,750 nonfatal work-related transportation incidents involving one or more days away from work in 2020, down from 64,210 in 2019. There were also fewer fatal work-related transportation incidents in 2020 (1,778 deaths) than in 2019 (2,122 deaths).

Job openings decreased by 605,000 to 10.7 million on the last business day of June 2022. Hires and total separations were little changed at 6.4 million and 5.9 million, respectively.

Labor productivity rose in wholesale trade and in retail trade in 2021. In wholesale trade, productivity rose 5.7 percent as output growth (+8.7 percent) surpassed growth in hours worked (+2.8 percent). In retail trade, productivity increased by 6.6 percent as output growth (+10.4 percent) exceeded growth in hours worked (+3.6 percent).

Compensation costs for private industry workers increased 5.5 percent from June 2021 to June 2022, the largest 12-month advance since data were first collected in March 2001. Wages and salaries rose 5.7 percent over this period, the largest 12-month rise since data were first collected in March 2001. The costs of benefits increased 5.3 percent. For state and local government workers, compensation costs increased 3.4 percent from June 2021 to June 2022.
