“Strategy is the difference between making a wish and making it come true.”

Most books on cloud computing either stay at a very high level, offer simplistic recipes, or dive deep into vendor-specific product details. This book helps you fill the large gap in between: aligning technology change with organizational transformation, making architectural decisions, and communicating trade-offs to diverse stakeholders. The book complements structured decision models with real-life anecdotes, both harvested from half a decade of defining and implementing cloud strategies for major organizations.

Today’s enterprises need a more nuanced strategy than simply proclaiming "cloud first!" A strategy isn't something you can copy-paste from a recipe book or from another organization because diverse starting points, objectives, and constraints imply different choices and trade-offs. So, rather than offering simplistic “3-step-recipes”, this book guides you towards your own strategy, helping you ask the right questions and connecting the dots between the many available technologies and your business drivers. You’ll learn why the cloud lives in the first derivative, how to overcome past constraints, how to organize for successful cloud migrations, the trade-offs of hybrid and multi-cloud architectures, designing cloud-native applications, and optimizing for cost-efficient and resilient operations.

Being free of jargon and product pitches, this book is a valuable guide for:

  • Enterprise and cloud architects who are tasked with defining and communicating a credible cloud strategy
  • Consultants and advisors who rely on evocative decision models to guide their clients’ cloud journey
  • IT executives who want to harvest the full benefits of cloud computing
  • Business executives who align organizational changes with the technical transformation

Gregor Hohpe - Cloud Strategist

IT Decision Makers
A Resource for IT Decision Makers
  • Enterprise Architects: define and share a balanced cloud strategy
  • Cloud Architects: evaluate cloud architecture trade-offs
  • IT Executives: harvest the full benefits of cloud platforms
  • Business Executives: align organization and technology

Deep insight in clear language

Connect business and IT with a cohesive strategy, not buzzwords

Having seen the technology business from almost every possible angle, I found one thing in common: the giant gap between high-level “strategic” buzzwords and the actual implementation. Sure, you want your business to be digital and agile, but what technologies will get you there? And what organizational changes are needed to realize the technologies' potential? Rather than propose simplistic recipes, my books provide the reader with mental models to find the best strategy for their organization.

  • Mental models instead of simplistic recipes
  • Connecting dots instead of spewing buzzwords
  • Actual experience instead of grand visions
  • Deep insight in an approachable format

Cloud Strategy: Transformation, Organization, Architecture, Economics

Turn Sideways

Workforce Migration

Enterprise Non-Cloud

Cloud Savings

The cloud turns your organization sideways

Traditional IT maintains a strict separation between infrastructure and application teams: whereas application teams delight customers with functionality, infrastructure teams procure hardware, assure reliable operations, and protect IT assets. The frequent quarrels between the respective teams might hint that maybe not everything is perfect in this setup.

Retain / Re-Skill / Replace / Retire

When IT leaders and architects speak about cloud migrations, they usually refer to migrating applications out of their data center. However, a perhaps even bigger challenge is how to migrate your workforce to embrace the cloud operating model and work efficiently in the new environment.

Don’t Build an Enterprise Non-Cloud!

Many enterprises that moved to the cloud have found that not all of their expectations have been met, or at least not as quickly as they would have liked. Although an unclear strategy or inflated expectations can be culprits, in many cases the problems lie closer to home. The migration journey deprived the enterprise of exactly those great properties that the cloud was going to bring them.

Cloud Savings Have to Be Earned

Many cloud initiatives are motivated, and justified, by cost savings. Cost is always a good argument, particularly in traditional organizations, which still view IT as a cost center. And although lower cost is always welcome, once again things aren’t that simple. It’s time to take a closer look at reducing your infrastructure bill.

This is an excellent book on cloud strategy, written by one of the world's leading experts on the subject.A meaningful strategy is unique to you, and Gregor gives you decision models that you can actually use to create a winning strategy of your own. If you're looking for answers, he provides them, but more importantly he reveals the thinking behind the answers - why they work vs. the alternatives, and backs them up with examples from his real-world experience, and from others he's mentored and advised. As Gregor says, every decision implies a trade-off, and being aware of these tough decisions ahead of time allows you to plan in such a way to know what's coming and maximize your chances of success. The information in this book is accurate and up-to-date, which is quite a feat given how quickly the industry is changing. Gregor has done a great job cutting through the hype, presenting complex ideas in a way that even non-technical readers can easily understand, without compromising on diving deep on the important details, while also keeping it fun and engaging.I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in cloud strategy, whether you're new to cloud or an experienced cloud practitioner.

This book is well-written and thought-provoking. It reads like a conversation, rather than a textbook. If you are looking to transform your business into the future, keep up with technology trends and really answer the question: “so, why are we going to the cloud again?” This book is for you.

Definitely a book worth reading. Whether you're just considering moving to the cloud or are already well into cloud implementations, this book is a great resource. This book covers lots of ground from thinking about how "the cloud" is different (see "Cloud Thinks in the First Derivative") to practical advice about operating on cloud infrastructure (see "Automation Isn't about Efficiency").

Writing in a very accessible, conversational style, Hohpe packs lots of well-earned wisdom and experience into the book without being preachy. There are also lots of references and links to other authors and articles that help expand on the topics in the book. Finally, I like that many chapters end with a "Do's and Don'ts" section that provides actionable advice and takeaways.

No matter your level in your organization, you'll find this book helpful and informative.

This is a very insightful book. It reflects a diversity of depth and experience that is hard to match. Hohpe made huge contributions to the architecture community through his messaging patterns book. Functioning as a C-level advisor for companies and their cloud migrations helps him to achieve an understanding of high-level concerns as well. I read the book slowly, a chapter or two a day. It's a very easy read but it gives you a lot to think about that would not likely have occurred to you unless you've been through several cloud transitions. In practice, only those in consultative positions (such as Hohpe) can say that. Read it slowly. It's an easy read but there is a lot here.

Straight to the point: this book gets at the very best a C. I picked up the book based on reviews and based on the contents whereby I thought the author was humorous and it was a fun read. Indeed the book leans heavily on the anecdotal side and humor side than real IT. If you have a background in IT, you would never pick up this book; there are tons and tons of incredible articles on Cloud Migration and Cloud Strategies for free on the web, published by accomplished techies. Is it possible that an accomplished Gregor Hohpe author above can write a lukewarm book? Yes, Yes it is possible. This book truly feels like the author wrote a bunch of experiences on napkins while flying in an airplane between sipping martinis. There are a few extremely high level concepts that are worth being aware, these are at the 10,000 ft level. And Yes it is possible that some companies miss out on these very basic concepts. For example: "getting new features into production quickly is a core competency" ... pretty basic and straightforward to most in IT or the business side of an organization ... Anyways, the book is 300 pages, you can dedicate reading it, where there are absolutely no concrete examples to support the statements or you can search the web. BTW if the author would have had some insight from academia, he would have realized that nothing ever hits a home run without specific examples that show a person the logic. It's like going thru college, but never doing any of the homework assignments: you can't learn .... Hope this helps...

This book provides a straightforward framework for organizations to develop an effective cloud migration strategy. The author layouts out a decision-based approach that involves assessing the business case, choosing the right cloud model, selecting workloads to migrate, and designing the migration process.

A key strength of the book is its focus on the strategic decision-making required for successful cloud adoption. The author provides clear guidance on evaluating if the cloud is right for your business, which workloads are best suited for cloud migration, and how to align cloud migration to broader business goals.

Each chapter introduces decision points organizations face in cloud migration, analyzes the tradeoffs involved, and offers advice on making the right choice for your unique needs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very clear, and some good insights
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 2, 2022
This is one of those books which make you think:

"This is really obvious, so why didn't I think of that?"

Which is usually (in my experience) a sign of good ideas being clearly communicated. This book does not rely on you understanding anything about specific cloud technologies; it really is more a high level guide, especially in the early pages, for how to think about IT strategy in general, and how that relates to transforming an organisation and its IT function to make use of the cloud.

I strongly recommend this book to any CIO or IT architect wanting to move some or all of their functionality to the cloud, and also to other senior executives in an organisation wanting to move to the cloud, to really understand what the impact is on the whole organisation. Cloud migration is not a normal IT project, nor is it a normal outsourcing, and nor is it an activity which lives solely within IT.
