In the second quarter of 2022, Kaspersky researchers witnessed Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) actors increasingly targeting the cryptocurrency industry. Using cryptocurrency-related content and warnings from law enforcements as bait, the actor behind this new and highly active campaign, dubbed “NaiveCopy”, attacked stock and cryptocurrency investors in South Korea. Further analysis of NaiveCopy’s tactics and techniques revealed another related campaign active the year before which targeted unknown entities in both Mexico and the UK. This, along with other discoveries, is revealed in Kaspersky’s latest quarterly threat intelligence summary.

Kaspersky researchers have uncovered a new ransomware group that further underlines the trend of ransomware actors turning to cross-platform functionality. The group, dubbed Luna, employs the use of ransomware written in Rust, a programming language that has been previously used by BlackCat and Hive gangs, among others. It allows them to easily port malware from one operating system to another. This discovery, among others, is part of the recent crimeware report available on Securelist by Kaspersky.

On TikTok, a prank where people call their friends using an automated answering machine voice to tell them that a large amount of money is about to be debited from their account is gaining popularity. Kaspersky experts warn that this trend is a real fraud scheme, called vishing, and is actively used by cybercriminals. Kaspersky researchers detected an increase in the number of vishing emails in June (almost 100,000 total) and collected approximately 350,000 vishing emails between March and June 2022. They also explained how vishing works and how to avoid falling into this trap of cybercriminals.
