The tech version of mansplaining:

- ran a product line that would have grown even if it was run by your mom
- made good money at IPO
- too lazy to go back to work and run a real startup, investor now
- gives advice on how to run a startup

From a friend: Berkeley, California's "Nuclear Free Zone" signs are now covered in pronuclear stickers.
Only thing old Berkeley environmentalists hate more than housing and bike lanes is nuclear energy.
The city can't or won't replace the signs. I didn't do this but wish I had.
It's here–the deepest, sharpest infrared view of the universe to date: Webb's First Deep Field.
Previewed by @POTUS on July 11, it shows galaxies once invisible to us. The full set of @NASAWebb's first full-color images & data will be revealed July 12: http://nasa.gov/webbfirstimages
Biggest permanent change due to the pandemic is remote work:
Office occupancy still down by more than 50% (!) and the return to office trend is starting to plateau

San Francisco genuinely is really foggy. It’s not a joke. The fog rolls in from the Pacific and floats up against the beach, stacking up above Twin Peaks until it drops like an ephemeral avalanche onto the city below. And this captures it perfectly.

A year ago I would have seen these and thought "huh, rendered illegible by the ravages of time." Today I saw them and thought "huh, those look rendered by DALL-E."

If you truly want to “bank the unbanked”, look to what UPI did in India, Pix in Brazil, M-Pesa in Africa - all in a few short years.
Cool thread detailing some of the new carbon removal approaches we're funding. The scientific frontier is rapidly advancing, and the emissions reduction + carbon removal combo will be surprisingly effective.
Frontier has facilitated its first carbon removal purchases on behalf of Stripe and the tens of thousands of companies using Stripe Climate. We’re spending $8M on removal from six new suppliers and we’ll be the first customer for each of them. https://frontierclimate.com/writing/spring-2022-purchases…

So somewhere between 3B and 20B #parti models acquire the ability to spell. Cross-checking with model that can't seem to spell (#dalle2) and that can (#imagen):
Imagen: 4.6B text enc + 2B text-to-image + 1B super-res
DALL-E 2: 250M (?) text enc + 600M image enc + 3.5B dec
#Parti paper has some really interesting results where they show the improvements in image quality as the number of model parameters is scaled up from 350M to 20B.
You see visible quality enhancement for the hipster kangaroo, and accurate text rendering!

’s prices at the Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company might have saved Medicare, a federal health scheme for the elderly, $3.6bn on $9.6bn-worth of drugs it had bought in 2020.
The most underrated but most valuable thing you can do when you join a new team is to talk to everyone you can then ask them what's working and what's not.
