NEW YORK OUTRIGGER

New York Outrigger is a 100% volunteer-run, 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that predominantly serves Black, Indigenous, and People of Color communities in New York City. We are a community of volunteer paddlers eager to share our love of the water through outrigger canoe paddling and stand up paddleboarding. Based in the lands of the Lenni-Lenape, New York Outrigger acknowledges that we are visitors and carry a responsibility to be stewards of the Hudson River Estuary.

NYO’s Alaka’i Program is meant to build strength, confidence, and teamwork. Open to members who are competition driven and focused on improving technique and building physical fitness. Advanced focus on all aspects of outrigger paddling including steering, huli drills and change drills specifically for racing.  Alaka’i is the Hawaiian word for leader or guide. A true alaka’i leads by example, living the very principles they teach. There are many alaka’i in this world: parents, teachers, coaches, government leaders, employers, and the list could go on. The role of an alaka’i is special and deeply important. The world needs more alaka’i. If we break down the Hawaiian word into two parts, we find an even deeper meaning to the word. “Ala” means – to rise up or come forward “ka’i” means – to lead, direct, lift up and carry. Therefore, when we put the whole word together, we get the sense that a true alaka’i rises to the occasion. They come forward to lead, lift, and carry others. An alaka’i looks only to serve others and become their best self in the process.

What a weekend it’s been so far! We kicked off our first FREE public standup paddle boarding session of the season and are enjoying perfect weather to be out on the water in NYC. Our first weekday Growth practice of the season is on tonight. Every paddler, from novices to veterans, can benefit from focused attention on the core basics. NYO’s Growth Sessions are geared toward building both technique and conditioning, and provide a team-oriented environment to stretch and sharpen the paddler skillset. A rotation of mentors will leverage drill exercises and endurance training to challenge personal limits and achieve team goals. Whether the aim is supplementing race preparation or simply improving to the next level, these sessions are open to all NYO paddlers.

It’s official, our 2022 season starts this week. We welcome guests to visit us at our first free public novice paddling session this weekend Saturday 5/21 & Sunday 5/22 12noon at Hudson River Parks’s Pier 66. Our free novice sessions are open to the public and will be offered by our volunteers every weekend until September 4.
