Be kind to the planet and your baby with one of these all-in-ones

We tested these on ease of wear, comfort, design, cost and production methods

All babygrows are the same you say? Well that’s not quite true. While they all serve a very similar purpose, next time you pop one in your basket or hit that buy now button you may want to take a take note of the fabric.

Organic cotton has fast become a go-to for baby brands both high street and designer.

Better for baby with its super soft qualities with no nasty chemicals to irritate precious skin; better for parents as they’ll stand the test of time and countless washing, and better for our lovely planet too.

According to The Soil Association organic cotton emits up to 46 per cent less greenhouse gas than non-organic.

It’s better for water than conventionally produced cotton too, organic farming allows for healthy soil to become like a sponge, soaking up water during floods and holding it for longer in times of drought.

Organic fibres are grown without nasty chemicals, and organic cotton farmers get a much better price for their crop, so everyone is a winner. In the UK, there are two independent organic certifications: The Soil Association Certification and the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) so when making your next babygrow purchase look out for these.

An all-in-one, a romper, a bodysuit – they’re all babygrows to us, and we’ve put to the test a fine selection of strictly organic babygrows.

Trialling and rating them in terms of ease of wear, comfort, design, cost and production methods, and we’ve given kudos for any additional eco credentials too.

You can trust our independent reviews. We may earn commission from some of the retailers, but we never allow this to influence selections. This revenue helps us to fund journalism across The Independent.

INPO x From Babies with Love multi-print organic babygrow

It’s hard not to coo over the gender-neutral love collection; made in collaboration with artist In No Particular Order. The whole ethos of From Babies with Love is built on helping. Not just a fraction but all profits go around the world to support abandoned children. Your custom provides the profit that helps orphaned and abandoned children globally. The INPO x From Babies with Love multi-print babygrow is made with certified GOTS organic cotton yarn, while the envelope neck makes for easy dressing. What’s not to love?

Mori zip-up sleepsuit

Predominantly known for its baby essentials, we really urge parents to discover the softness of Mori – it has to be touched to be believed, and that’s thanks to its organic blend which is made up of 70 per cent viscose from bamboo and 30 per cent organic cotton. It’s no surprise the zip-up sleepsuit is a bestseller for the brand, the concealed zip-up front makes for easier night-time changes and is a breeze to put on and take off. There’s also the option to personalise with up to 10 characters, making a lovely sentiment. While it’s not the cheapest on the market you’ll struggle to find anything as soft as this.

Organic Zoo midnight wrapover bodysuit navy

The clue is in the title with British brand Organic Zoo. We love the wrap over design, which not only looks smart but is also easy when tackling a wriggly baby. The unisex nature means it’s great for passing on to siblings. The raw cotton used to make Organic Zoo’s bespoke materials comes from certified and Fair Trade suppliers. The rich dye used is Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified, meaning it contains no harmful substances. We found it a little on the small size, so it may be worth sizing up, but the ribbed fabric does stretch well.

Kit and Kin white all-in-one

First known for its natural and sustainable skincare products and eco nappies, this year Kit & Kin launched its babywear line following the businesses’ conscious ethos. The result? Well, it’s rather lovely. The 100 per cent organic cotton babywear range is not only completely adorable, it’s also helping to conserve rainforests and fund healthcare clinics women in Sierra Santa Cruz in partnership with the World Land Trust. The design of this GOTS certified classic all-in-one features fold over scratch mitts, as well as fold over feet for easy transition from day to night.

Next baby three pack GOTS organic cotton sleepsuits

It would be difficult to do a babygrow round-up and not include Next. The high street giant knows a thing or two when it comes to baby clothing. This multipack demonstrates how parents can get quality organic products without breaking the bank. Made from 100 per cent GOTS certified cotton, we love the pastel neutral colourings of this sleepsuit set. You’ll also find a range of sizes starting from 5lb.

ergoPouch sleep onesie (1.0 tog)

For Australian brand ergoPouch, a comfortable night’s sleep is order of the day. While this may be easier said than done, its products have all been cleverly crafted to give you the best start for baby’s slumber. It is a cross between a babygrow and sleeping bag for older babies. We think this relaxed fitting onesie, made from organic cotton and bamboo, is a great purchase for warmer summer nights. Designed for those aged six months to three years, the 1.0 tog rating suits typical nursery room temperatures of around 21-24C. The nifty three-way zipper means you can easily check a suspicious nappy from behind, and easily unzip for a quick nappy change or toilet trip.

Pop My Way short sleeved bodysuit

While this may look like your average short-sleeved babygrow, that’s where you’d be mistaken. New creative clothing brand Pop My Way has a selection of interchangeable accessories, such as peter pan collars and bibs that are designed to simply “pop” on using the built-in poppers making it easy to dress up your babygrow. Fully GOTS certified, Pop My Way use the finest pima cotton which is grown naturally in Peru.

The Bonniemob snug baby bunny shorty playsuit

Brighton-based The Bonniemob has been lovingly dressing babies for 15 years. With a commitment to choosing organic materials and keeping things sustainable, this fun baby bunny playsuit is a great example from the brand. Made from 95 per cent GOTS certified organic cotton and five per cent elastane to give a bit of stretch. We love the added bunny pocket detailing which makes it’s a perfect outfit for anytime of the day.

Polarn O.Pyret pineapple print wraparound baby bodysuit

Dress your own little pineapple in this fun fruity number from Swedish brand Polarn O.Pyret. Made from GOTS certified organic cotton, we love the extra row of poppers for longevity of wear and the tropical fold over cuffs cleverly double up as scratch mitts. The wraparound design is easy to dress baby in, and the extra stretch around the bottom makes it easy for enlarging over a nappy. While this one is low in stock, the brand has a range of other patterns, including stripes and pond print in the same wrap around style.

Lazy Baby just done 9 months inside babygrow

If you’re looking to gift a babygrow this “just done nine months inside” will guarantee some sniggers. This black and white soft GOTS certified babygrow comes packed in its own gift envelope, making it an amusing baby shower or newborn gift. Jokes aside, it’s wonderfully soft and well-made while the monochrome stripes look great on baby’s camera roll.

The verdict: Organic cotton babygrows

For us, the winner has to be From Babies with Love for keeping it strictly organic, going above on beyond to look after others less fortunate and all the while producing a wonderful babygrow with its INPO x From Babies with Love multi-print organic babygrow. We also fell head over heels for Polarn O.Pyret’s adorable wraparound baby bodysuits, and it should be applauded for its nifty design features.
