9 best maternity sportswear pieces and sets that support your bump

For raising your heart rate – or chilling on the sofa – we’ve found the comfiest fits for the job

Our tester put these fits through light stretching, walking, adapted HIIT classes, pregnancy yoga

While it’s true the first few months of pregnancy are often spent battling fatigue or sickness, for many the second trimester brings with it far more energy, and that often talked about “glow”. The perfect time to get moving!

Granted, we wouldn’t recommend you spend your pregnancy training for a marathon if you’ve not so much as downloaded the Couch to 5K app.

However, the NHS guidelines clearly say you can “keep up your normal daily physical activity or exercise – sport, running, yoga, dancing, or even walking to the shops and back – for as long as you feel comfortable.” In other words, don’t be afraid to keep active. It’s good for you, and your baby.

And even if your only plans for the day involve walking to the fridge and back (we’re not here to judge), a good set of maternity activewear will leave you and your bump feeling supported and comfortable.

Our tester is currently 20 weeks pregnant, and tried these pieces with light stretching, walking, adapted HIIT classes, pregnancy yoga and yes – relaxing on the sofa. She was looking for styles with plenty of stretch for a growing bump and versatile features that will come in useful during the postpartum period.

Style is obviously just as important as it always was, so we’ve found a selection of chic black basics, through to hot pops of colour and some animal print thrown in for good measure. These are the key pieces we recommend investing in for a happy, healthy pregnancy.

Natal Active luxe maternity/postnatal leggings

Best: Overall

Natal Active’s range of bright leggings, shorts, nursing tops and sports bras are designed to be worn through every stage of pregnancy and beyond. That means leggings with amazing stretch and bras that come with colour matched extenders, so they can be worn during both pregnancy and breastfeeding!

The brand also recently launched an initiative to buy back and resell preloved activewear with the money raised going to Women’s Aid. The leggings and shorts come with a Kicks Count label (to remind you to monitor baby’s movements) and the bras with a Coppa Feel one to remind women to check their breasts.

Super soft and supportive, these 7/8 leggings come in plain black, cobalt blue, hot pink and soft grey. The lovely deep pockets are ideal for stashing your phone, and they didn’t budge or sag after wearing them all day. Passing our squat-proof test with flying colours, these can be worn over or under the bump.

Asos design maternity sweatshirt and ribbed shorts

Best: Budget tracksuit set

Ever since finding out we were pregnant, we’ve wanted to climb into oversized sweats for comfort. This stylish two-piece tracksuit set combines a relaxed, drop shoulder sweatshirt and cute ribbed cycling shorts. The latter features a high-waisted curved band designed to sit over the bump, and comes in handy for wearing under short dresses or while cycling. We’ll definitely be wearing both after the baby arrives, and at this price, we think it’s a total steal.

Boob Design once-on-never-off leggings

Best for: Yoga

Boob Design’s “once-on-never-off” maternity leggings are some of the softest we’ve tried, and while they’re not completely opaque, the soft stretchy fabric really did make us forget we were even wearing them – making them well suited to gentle stretching and pregnancy yoga. The design features a wide waist section which can be worn folded over for extra support or worn over your bump. They also come in a fun grey animal print.

Latched maternity leggings

Best for: Big bumps

Built by a mum, for mums, the Latched range provides comfort and support from those first days when everything starts getting tight, through to the postpartum months when you just need comfort. With over the bump waistbands that can be worn up or folded down to suit your style, or nursing jumpers for feeding on the go, there really is something for all mums, whether you are working out or simply lounging.

Available in sizes XS-XL, these squat-proof leggings feature an extra high, curved waistband for the biggest of bumps as well as handy pockets. They also come in a short version (£35, Latched.uk) for the summer months.

Cake Maternity cotton candy nursing bra

Best: Versatile maternity bra

Although described as a nursing bra, the shape and support make this the perfect maternity bra for walking or yoga. Despite being non-wired, the dense seamless knitted fabric left us feeling very supported. Our favourite bit was the drop-down cups which lower to expose the whole breast (and not just a teeny tiny hole, which can be difficult for babies to latch onto properly).

It comes in a million colours (well, eight), and has an adjustable racerback and hook and eye that will accommodate up to half a cup size above or below your current size. It also features a side opening if you need to add breast pads to mop up leakage. The brand has thought of everything so you can just crack on with caring for your baby while staying active.

Nike swoosh support padded sports bra

Best: Light to medium support maternity bra

Available in plain black, bright mango and smoke grey, Nike’s swoosh bra features a clever wrap that pulls aside for easy breastfeeding. Offering light to medium support, the cross back kept everything in place during our workout and the sweat-wicking fabric kept us perfectly dry.

Mamalicious maternity sports legging

Best: Fashion maternity leggings

Combining trend-led leopard print panels with super comfortable stretch, Mamalicious has nailed the fashion legging. They are made with a knitted material, more like a really thick pair of tights, so are quite sheer (yes, you can see your knickers!). However, they look fantastic with a big oversized black sweatshirt – we like the ASOS one above (£22, Asos.com). It features a wide high-waisted panel which will easily accommodate even the biggest bump.

Seraphine the mama’s essential set

Best: Starter kit

If you’re not quite sure where to start when it comes to your maternity wardrobe, this handy bundle from Seraphine is ideal. It features two simple cotton vests (in grey and navy), with a drop-down popper panel for nursing; alongside a simple black bamboo legging and a more slouchy grey jogger designed to sit under the bump. These key pieces will see you through pregnancy and keep you comfortable once your baby is earthside.

JoJo Maman Bébé black maternity activewear mesh panel leggings

Best: Maternity leggings for tall women

Designed specifically for pregnancy, these sweat-wicking thick black leggings feature a very generous waistband to help support your bump while active. There’s also little mesh inserts at the ankles, a zippered back pocket perfect for a credit card or key, and side pockets for slipping your phone into – leaving you hands-free. We found the fit would be better suited to tall women, as on our 5ft 4in frame the waistband finished above our bust!

The verdict: Maternity sportswear

From the second we slipped into Natal Active’s leggings, we rarely took them off. They fit like a second skin, offering plenty of support in a buttery soft fabric.

We were also big fans of Cake Maternity’s super comfortable bra, choosing it above all others in the drawer, even before we started breastfeeding.

And lastly, the two-piece from Asos straddles the line between comfort and fashion perfectly, so we think you’ll get lots of wear out of it. Plus, it’s a total bargain!
