The past few years have seen many mainstream make-up brands create a wider amount of foundation shades to suit different skin tones and ethnicities. But, there is still a long way to go in beauty’s big names offering foundation shades to appeal to every user.

For many Asian women, choosing and using a foundation that’s their perfect match is so much more than just finding the right formula. Many suffer with pigmentation problems and find that their forehead and cheeks differ in shade.

Bobbi Brown pro artist Zara Findlay – who is of Indian descent – says that one of the most important aspects in finding the perfect foundation is understanding your skin’s undertone.

“What is difficult to find is the right undertone and someone that has the knowledge behind Asian women’s skin. Being half Indian myself, I have areas on my face like my forehead and chin that are naturally darker than the rest of my face. I also have a very yellow and golden undertone.”

Zara’s advice for a starting point is to swatch shades on different parts of the face and establish if you have a yellow, pink, olive, cool or neutral undertone.

Using the wrong shade can result in Asian women’s skin appearing grey or ashy instead of the bright complexions seen on many of those whose tones are easier to colour match.

Many beauty brands offer the chance to match skin shades online to provide for a more seamless foundation purchasing experience. And more are exploring bigger and more inclusive shade ranges and this has given Asian women a chance to finally have their skin tones represented.

When testing and choosing the perfect foundation shade matching was our top priority, but we were also interested in something that kept the face feeling fresh, provided a glow and lasted all day without feeling heavy.

KVD Vegan Beauty lock-it foundation

When KVD Vegan Beauty was launched by tattoo artist and model Kat Von D in 2008 the brand comprised of a handful of red lipsticks and not much else. Fast forward 12 years and the line is now so proud of itsvegan and cruelty-free status that a quick rebrand made sure this was at the forefront.

The lock-it foundation comes in 44 shades and promises transfer-proof, full-coverage that lasts all day. In terms of inclusivity there is a big range of shades to choose from and with a choice for each undertone it’s definitely one for those who struggle to find their perfect hue.

With that in mind we were extremely impressed by the colour match and application of this. Not only does it come in an uber-cool bottle but the formula is creamy with one pump being more than enough for full cover.

There is plenty said about this foundation being perfect for covering up tattoos and it really does provide a flawless base while lasting pretty much all-day without touch ups passing the wear test with flying colours.

Anastasia Beverly Hills luminous foundation

Hollywood’s eyebrow queen Anstasia Soare turned her hands to make-up in recent years and created a cult line that is loved by millions around the globe. Towards the end of last year the beauty mogul launched luminous skin foundation, a foundation promising – among other things – that it is vegan, gluten-free, non-comedogenic, long-wearing and ophthalmologist tested.

On first impression, we were surprised that the glass bottle had the word “foundation” emblazoned across it, but a little research explained that Anastasia’s daughter Norvina (who is also president of ABH) said this is so makeup artists and those in a rush can find the bottle quickly amongst other products.

The product itself is medium coverage and provides a subtle glow, however those with mre pronounced lines would need to ensure their skin is primed and hydrated, as there is a tendency for this to sink into creases.

The foundation comes in 50 shades, broken down into five categories of fair, light, medium, tan and deep. This is perfect for those who struggle to find a colour match – and we totally recommend it for darker tones as the colour shows up a little deeper than initially matched.

Charlotte Tilbury airbrush flawless foundation

When Charlotte Tilbury switched her attention from applying make-up to creating it, beauty-obsessed fans went wild for her luxurious products in sleek packaging.

The product promises a whole host of benefits including a natural matte finish, weightless, full coverage and 24-hours of moisture.

We were extremely impressed with the 44 shades, each coming in a cool, neutral or warm hue. After a thorough shade match we were stunned at how true-to-tone the colour was for a yellow undertone. One pump of this is more than enough for full-coverage.

After an eight-hour wear we were amazed that the product still looked fresh and had retained its matte look. No oil had broken free and the colour was still as intact as it was when applied, however for those who are sensitive to smell this foundation does have a distinct floral scent. Despite being a little on the pricey side, this would be a perfect fit for those who struggle to shade match and who want something which provides full coverage while feeling lightweight.

Shiseido synchro self-refreshing foundation SPF30

Shiseido promise its foundation shades are “inspired by skin” and thus users are promised a perfect colour match – and it's not wrong. We were thoroughly impressed with the uncanny shade range that comprises of 30 colours from light to deep.

This foundation infuses all of the Japanese beauty wisdom typical of Shiseido. We tested this for eight hours and from first application to removal the foundation hadn’t budged. It kept the skin looking supple and hydrated while also providing medium coverage.

Those who have drier skin may want to make sure they adequately moisturised beforehand as it can cling to drier areas. For those with normal to oily skin types this foundation is great. While we can’t comment on the promise of a 24-hour wear, it lasted extremely well after eight.

Too Faced born this way foundation

Too Faced’s Born This Way collection is all about “I woke up like this” perfection and their foundation promises this with undetectable, natural, medium-to-full coverage. The oil free formula is infused with coconut water and hyaluronic acid for a smooth yet hydrated finish.

But, what really caught our eye was the fact that this foundation comes in 35 shades. To make matters even better for those who struggle to find colour matches, this foundation is broken down into fair, light, medium, tan and deep tones.

This foundation was put to the test in warm weather and after initially being impressed at how perfect the colour match was, we were awed by the long wear and natural yet full coverage. The foundation has the shade range and finish of a high-end product without a hefty price tag in common.

Huda Beauty #faux filter foundation

Instagram beauty queen Huda Kattan says her olive complexion and gold undertones have made foundation hunting hard work in the past, so she's made sure her own line is all-inclusive.

The result is a 30-strong line with names like butter pecan, milkshake and toasted coconut celebrating the fairest of tones to the deepest. The foundation itself promises a filter-like, airbrushed complexion thanks to a high percentage of pigments that claim to cover blemishes, scars and even out skin texture.

With all of these claims we had high hopes – and were not disappointed. It goes on like a dream, is a perfect colour match and a little goes a long way. The coverage is buildable but one pump is more than enough to stay put all day giving a weightless yet flawless finish.

Morphe fluidity foundation

Comes in an amazing 60 shades, which is broken down in “levels” from one to five, each correlating a different undertone, Morphe promises wearers an oil-free, sweat-proof full coverage that lasts all day.

We were impressed with the consistency of this foundation as its definitely full coverage without that heavy feel, which is similar to others in this range. However, full coverage means there are plenty of pigments so overusing the wrong shade will add an unwanted colour to the face.

That being said, we recommend this foundation as it is wallet friendly, has a pretty much unrivalled shade range and is full coverage that lasted us eight hours without top up.

bareMinerals BAREPRO performance wear liquid foundation SPF20

This liquid foundation from bareMinerals promises a full, natural matte finish and a selection of 30 “true-to-you” shades as well as a heat, humidity, sweat and water-resistant formula.

First of all, we noticed how thin the formula was compared to full-coverage ones. It is definitely more of a medium coverage and is best suited for those with oilier complexions looking for subtle coverage.

After a few hours wear we noticed dry patches peeking out and despite the claim from bareMinerals of “24-hour breathable full coverage” found that this didn’t last more than a couple before looking patchy.

Oxygenetix oxygenating foundation

This 15-shade foundation range was designed for post-procedure use on the face to cover up redness. While wearing make-up after intensive treatment may be seen as counter-productive, the ingredient list explains more. There is aloe vera and in a nod to the brand’s name this foundation contains ceravitae complex, an ingredient to that increase the skin’s oxygen uptake, which in turn helps to speed up the healing process of post-procedure scars by encouraging collagen regeneration and connective tissue growth.

On first use we were surprised at how perfect the colour match was for deeper skin tones especially as the shade range is limited. The foundation has a gel-like consistency and is buildable to full coverage while keeping the skin looking and feeling hydrated all day.

Bobbi Brown skin foundation stick

In the past few years the beauty industry has seen a rise in the number of brands creating foundation sticks. Bobbi Brown’s version is a versatile product that can be used across the whole face, for touch ups and is created for all skin types – no mean feat in itself.

The foundation stick comes in 43 shades, making it a great fit for those wanting to move away from heavier liquid foundations. It comes in sleek packaging and is perfect for carrying in a handbag for touch ups throughout the day. Thanks to the shade range, finding a match was easy with the foundation going on like a dream and can be built up in areas that require a little more coverage.

We would say this is more on the medium side than full coverage so those who have more to cover up may want to try a concealer as well.

Givenchy teint couture city balm SPF25

This foundation is available in just 14 shades and for those who struggle to match their skin tone this could be a harder one to get right. We pumped this onto our hand and were surprised at how pigmented it was for a medium coverage foundation. However, the shade was too dark on the face and the finish was more orange than intended.

One thing that stood out was just how well the foundation stayed put though, so for those who are after a light to medium coverage foundation that’s sweat-proof for the warmer months then this may be for you – even if it’s on the pricier side.

The verdict: Foundations for Asian skin

We found KVD Vegan Beauty’s lock-it foundation to be our winner for its full coverage, wear time and range of shades. If money is no object then Shiseido’s synchro self-refreshing foundation is perfect and for those after something more affordable you really can’t go wrong with Morphe’s fluidity foundation.
