  • @jpantani, @santanainniss and @yvettesonneveld hosted some 20 contributors.
  • @santanainniss onboarded 10 new contributors. Her group collaborated on some marketing tasks that did not require a lot of historic knowledge of the product or community. They came up with lots of great suggestions to improve onboarding and training.
  • @santanainniss along with 10 new contributors shared their impressikons on what is currently going on the official WordPress channels and started engaging with some of that content.
  • @jpantani hosted a group that went out on a field trip. They chatted with other contributors to find out what their favorite WordPress features were and how these impacted their lives. In order to group those in a helpful way, we also asked which user group described the respondents best. The same group was requested to ask around for websites and platforms that deserved a spot on the WordPress Showcase, so we now have some additional suggesgtions for that too.
  • @yvettesonneveld hosted a group that worked on microcopy for some WordPress 6.0 related content on the Learn.WordPress.org platform.
  • @dansoschin will go through the drafts this week, they will be edited if needed and will hopefully be shining on the channels soon.
  • @jpantani, @santanainniss and @yvettesonneveld will plan a retro meeting soon, to chat about what worked and what could be improved for future live sessions.

Discussion: Promoting WordCamps with the official WordPress social accounts

With the recent return of in-person events, the Marketing team has seen an increase in requests to promote the various milestones of these events as they are organized, especially WordCamps. This often means posting about the event with our various social media accounts.

Previously, the primary WordPress accounts were not used for event promotion. We have been able to put together a few posts for the recent WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. Europe and WordCamp US, but I would like to open this process up for discussion and codify it for the future so we can do more. For this, I have these goals in mind:

  • To regularly amplify and elevate the individual WordCamp social accounts where possible.
  • To provide an outline to event organizers of how, what, and when they can expect their updates/posts to be promoted.
  • To ensure the equitable promotion of all the wonderful things happening in the WordPress community while also maintaining an optimal publishing schedule for each social platform (each with its own recommended volume of posts per day).

What events will be promoted

While we do receive requests to promote a variety of events, there is an immediate need to support the return of in-person WordCamps. The audiences of the WordPress social accounts are global, which makes the larger events a natural fit, but the inclusion of more localized camps also demonstrates the diversity of our community. So the events that would be highlighted include:

What types of announcements would be shared

Where available, sharing would be done via re-tweeting/re-sharing (platform dependent) of the content from the event’s accounts, written by the event organizers. Driving followers to these accounts encourages more local connections and promotes increasing diversity. This is also the most scalable approach, given that the official WordPress social accounts are shared spaces promoting releases, workshops, news, etc. Re-tweeting/re-sharing respects the work done by WordCamp organizers and maximizes visibility for the events both now and in the future.

In practice, this looks like the following examples:

Equitable implementation thoughts

As mentioned before, the WordPress social accounts are shared spaces. Posting every update, speaker announcement, and blog post would quickly become too much. Based on the requests so far, below are the milestones that would be shared for each of the flagship events (currently, WordCamp Asia, WordCamp Europe, and WordCamp US):

For local WordCamps, periodic posts would highlight upcoming events listed on WordCamp Central, likely a week before the event. Periodic postings would also show appreciation for WordCamp organizers across the globe.

Feedback

I would like to gather feedback from everyone, especially those helping to organize WordCamps, on the points above. A few questions that come to mind are:

  • Are there any concerns with re-tweeting/re-sharing content from individual WordCamp accounts?
  • Are there any essential milestones missing from the list?
  • Are there any milestones that should be removed?

Once we’ve collected feedback, we can add this to the handbook as a resource for organizers and members of the Marketing team.

We had a great documentation sprint last week. Here’s a quick recap of some of our work:

  • From Nicholashttps://make.wordpress.org/marketing/handbook/getting-involved/new-contributor-orientation/ has been updated to fix links, add intros, and add github training links. We’ll want to revisit this area after the Training team has released more contributor training resources (sometime after WCEU).
  • From Nicholashttps://github.com/orgs/WordPress/teams/marketing/ now has the team description and wapuu.
  • From Nicholas: I’ve added several regular contributors to the GitHub Marketing team and added the Marketing Contributor badge to their WordPress.org profiles. I’d propose that team reps (current and future) review these each month during documentation sprints.
  • From Nicholas: I’ve reviewed the current Showcase process and documentation.
  • From AbhaUpdate on Issue 40 – existing confirmed and reviewed videos which are live on YouTube for onboarding to be added to Learn WP ahead of WCEU, if possible.
  • From AbhaUpdate on Issue 14 – GitHub labels and tags consolidation
  • From AbhaUpdate on Issue 37 – Promote call to translating hosting pages. Moved to other teams migrationMigration Moving the code, database and media files for a website site from one server to another. Most typically done when changing hosting companies. column. Note this is also set to be reviewed post WCEU by Polyglots, who will advise marketing if they need assistance with promoting a call. The issue has been closed for now with agreement from polyglots.
  • From AbhaUpdate on Issue 35 – TracTrac Trac is the place where contributors create issues for bugs or feature requests much like GitHub.https://core.trac.wordpress.org/. Ticket commenting – moved to column for migration to another team’s board. Note: if this is found to be needed prior to WCEU, it may need to be reopened.

Thank you to all who participated, specifically @jpantani @laurlittle @santanainniss @Amit Patel, @rmartinezduque, @webcommsat, @meher, @nalininonstopnewsuk, @marybaum who all helped out. @eidolonnight added several regular contributors to the GitHub Marketing team and added the Marketing Contributor badge (for an equivalent of 10 hours or more spent on one of our projects) to their WordPress.org profiles. He’d like to get us caught up with any regular contributors missing their profile badges so we can start reviewing for new folks each month (probably in tandem with the doc sprint).

A reminder you can get involved with the next meeting planning on this GitHub card for the meeting on 8 June 2022.
