Wimbledon: Nadal cruises into quarter-finals while Kyrgios battles to win in five sets

Follow all the action as the singles quarter-finals get underway on Day 9 at Wimbledon. Having ended the fairytale run of Tim van Rijthoven in the fourth round, defending champion Novak Djokovic took on the Italian No 10 seed Jannik Sinner, who defeated Spanish breakthrough star Carlos Alcaraz in the previous round. Sinner surged into a two-set lead on Centre Court but Djokovic fought back to win an epic in five sets - 5-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 - as the Serbian kept his hopes of a fourth straight men’s singles title at SW19 alive.

The second men’s quarter-final this afternoon saw Cameron Norrie - the British No 1 - come back from two sets to one down to beat world No 58 David Goffin 3-6, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 amid an incredible atmosphere on Court 1. Norrie is the last Briton standing in either singles draw and will face Djokovic in the semi-finals on Friday.

The Centre Court women’s quarter-finals also went the distance on Tuesday - with No 3 seed Ons Jabeur beating unseeded Czech marie Bouzkova 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 in the seoncd match on Centre Court. Earlier, Tatjana Maria won the all-German quarter-final on Court 1, beating Jule Niemeier 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Cameron Norrie:

“Literally speechless... stayed as patient as I could and just tried to put the ball in the court. Winning a match like this gives me flashbacks to all the pre-seasons and the hard work and it feels pretty good.”

On playing Djokovic: “Enjoy it, take it to him and hopefully you guys can get behind me again! Looking forward to it, can’t enjoy it too much now and just get ready for Novak in a couple of days!”

Wimbledon 2022: Goffin 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 5-7 Norrie

GAME, SET AND MATCH CAMERON NORRIE!

A few errors from Goffin on the forehand side brings the score to 30-0 before a wild Norrie forehand and then a forehand into the net makes it very nervy at 30-30.... but Norrie hits an ace down the T!

Match point - and Goffin hits a forehand passing shot winner! To deuce and Goffin hits a forehand long for a second match point and Goffin nets!

A first Wimbledon semi-final for Cameron Norrie! He will play Novak Djokovic on Friday! What a battle after three hours and 28 minutes!

Wimbledon 2022: Goffin 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 5-6 Norrie*

NORRIE BREAKS!

What on earth do I know...! Terrific point at 0-15 - with both players volleying at the net - is won by Norrie for 0-30 amid a fever-pitch atmosphere!

Goffin then goes long - twice! - and Norrie breaks to love!

He will serve for a place in the Wimbledon semi-finals!

Wimbledon 2022: *Goffin 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 5-5 Norrie

Norrie holds to 15, again very comfortably.

Might be going a bit earlier here but given how easily the two players have held serve in this set, surely a first-to-10 tiebreak beckons...

Wimbledon 2022: Goffin 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 5-4 Norrie*

Goffin holds to love - Norrie didn’t have a sniff in that game given the Belgian’s excellent placement on serve.

A game away now is the Belgian - the British No 1 will serve to stay in the match.

A reminder if it goes 6-6, we have a tiebreak to 10 to decide the winner...

Wimbledon 2022: *Goffin 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 4-4 Norrie

Big, assured, confident hold from Norrie to 30, particularly the last point as he doesn’t rush on an overhead and a volley. Goffin, valiant in retrieving, can’t force the error.

Back to all-square at 4-4! No breaks of serve yet in this fifth set...

Wimbledon 2022: Goffin 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 4-3 Norrie*

Goffin holds to 15, sealing it after a terrific point to finish!

Nip and tuck, side-to-side, before Norrie eventually nets - almost of exhaustion - with a slice backhand in the service box.

Crunch time now...

Wimbledon 2022: *Goffin 6-3 5-7 6-2 3-6 3-3 Norrie

A hold to love for Cameron Norrie, that’ll do. Crowd are getting ever more vocal as we reach the business end of this final set...
