Many large enterprises are feeling pressure from the rapid digitalization of the world: digital disruptors attack unexpectedly with brand-new business models; the "FaceBook generation" has dramatically different user expectations; and a whole slew of new technologies has become available to everyone with a credit card. This is tough stuff for enterprises that have been, and still are, very successful, but are built around traditional technology and organizational structures. "Turning the tanker", as the need to transform is often described, has become a board room-level topic in many traditional enterprises. Not as easily done as said.
Chief IT Architects and CTOs play a key role in such a digital transformation endeavor. They combine the technical, communication, and organizational skill to understand how a tech stack refresh can actually benefit the business, what "being agile" and "DevOps" really mean, and what technology infrastructure is needed to assure quality while moving faster. Their job is not an easy one, though: they must maneuver in an organization where IT is often still seen as a cost center, where operations means "run" as opposed to "change", and where middle-aged middle-management has become cozy neither understanding the business strategy nor the underlying technology. It's no surprise then that IT architects have become some of the most sought-after IT professionals around the globe.
This book aims to equip IT architects with the skills necessary to become effective not just in systems architecture, but also in shaping and driving the necessary transformation of large-scale IT departments. In today’s world, technical transformation and organizational transformation have become inseparable.
Organized into 37 episodes, this book explains:
- The role and qualities of an architect in a large enterprise
- How to think about architecture at enterprise scale
- How to communicate to a variety of stakeholders
- Organizational structures and systems
- How to transform traditional organizations
Armed with these insights, architects and CTOs will be able to ride the Architect Elevator up and down the organization to instill lasting change.

About the author
Gregor Hohpe advises CTOs and technology leaders in the transformation of both their organization and technology platform. Riding the Architect Elevator from the engine room to the penthouse, he assures that corporate strategy connects with the technical implementation and vice versa.
Gregor has served as Smart Nation Fellow to the Singapore government, as technical director in Google Cloud’s Office of the CTO, and as Chief Architect at Allianz SE, where he oversaw the architecture of a global data center consolidation and deployed the first private cloud software delivery platform.
Gregor is a widely recognized thought leader on asynchronous messaging and service-oriented architectures. He co-authored the seminal book 'Enterprise Integration Patterns' (Addison-Wesley, 2004), followed by "Integration Patterns" and "Enterprise Solution Patterns", both published by Microsoft Press. He was nominated a Microsoft MVP (Most Valuable Professional) Solution Architect for his contributions to the developer community and recognized as an active member of the patterns community by the Hillside Group. In 2005, Joel Spolsky selected Gregor's article 'Starbucks Does Not Use Two-phase Commit' for his 'Best Software Writing' (APress).
Gregor speaks regularly at technical conferences around the world. He likes to cut through the hype surrounding service-oriented architectures and captures nuggets of advice in the form of design patterns that can help developers avoid costly mistakes. Calling other people's mistakes is much easier and more enjoyable than recognizing your own.
The book allows you to intelligently “gossip”, and this is a powerful incentive for serious self-criticism, and critical thinking workouts.
Strongly recommended!
The book is full of humor and literally makes you LoL every now and then. A great example is the term "Feet of Enterprise Architecture". Try guessing that does it denote? The humor makes it very east to ingest and internalize the knowledge which this book is full of.
Great analogies. Analogies are good when trying to explain something but software industry is cursed with bad and horrible analogies. The ones Gregor uses are supreme. Example? Comparing architect role to movie characters. Yes, you'll find Matrix there.
Deep insights. Many people use the building architecture -- IT architecture parallel but Gregor actually cares to tear this analogy apart and put it back again to show what a good architecture document should and (more importantly) should not contain.
Invaluable are parts dealing with leadership, decision making and systems thinking.
Once caveat though: before you open the book prepare to change most of your current opinions on the software architecture. You have been warned!

OUTSTANDING book: Concise, witty and just a pleasure to read!
You can truly draw on an architects real-life experiences, here.
...hardly any book out there achieves to illustrate the contained insights with fewer words!
