(07/06/22) Health Science Specialist/Project Manager (GS-11) - Bedford, MA



We are looking for a highly motivated individual to serve as a full-time Project Manager (PM) at the VA Bedford Health Care System’s Center for Healthcare Organization and Implementation Research (CHOIR). This is a hybrid position.

Responsibilities include the following project management tasks:

  • Works independently to manage complex projects
  • Develops protocols and data collection timelines for projects
  • Proactively guides research team through timelines, identifies goals and milestones, sets agendas, and leads team meetings
  • Works independently to problem solve and report back periodically to PI
  • Serves as a liaison to operational partners and external stakeholders for ongoing project management, dissemination of research findings, etc.
  • Works with PI to develop and track budget
  • Coordinates compensation/fund transfers for external research collaborators
  • Anticipates and plans for regulatory requirements (e.g., QI v. research determination, progress reports, regulatory audits, etc.)

The individual will also:

  • Conduct literature reviews
  • Work with a team of health services researchers to develop qualitative and mixed method protocols, recruitment and sampling strategies and data collection tools (e.g., interview guides).
  • Collects multiple types of qualitative data which may include semi-structured interviews with a variety of audiences; observing care processes and clinical encounters; and performing document or chart reviews.
  • Work with others to develop coding frameworks that support qualitative data organization and analysis
  • Analyze qualitative data using a variety of methods, including rapid, thematic and content analysis.
  • Work with others to synthesize qualitative and quantitative results and presenting them in multiple formats (e.g., poster/oral presentations, reports, manuscripts).
  • Takes substantive part in writing & editing project reports and other dissemination of project findings

Requirements:

  • Completed Master’s degree(s) from an accredited institution in a related field, e.g., Anthropology, public health, psychology
  • Experience managing complex projects, working on a research team, using qualitative methods

The VA Evidence Synthesis Program (ESP) is a national research program focused on improving Veteran health and wellbeing through tailored evidence synthesis products. ESP produces high-quality, timely, and innovative syntheses designed to support the implementation of effective practices across the VHA system. ESP syntheses have resulted in positive changes to clinical practice and policy and have informed quality improvement and research-focused initiatives at the national level. The program comprises four Centers across the US and a Coordinating Center (CC) located in Portland, Oregon.

POSITION DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

The ESP is seeking a Data Visualization and Information (DVI) Specialist to examine and interpret findings of narrative and/or quantitative evidence syntheses (ie, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and related research products) and produce appealing visualizations that effectively facilitate reader understanding of, and engagement with, those findings. The DVI Specialist will also be involved in production of program administrative reports and scientific communication tools (eg, presentations, reporting templates, dashboards, etc) and in program-wide quality assurance activities, such as development and implementation of data visualization standards and practices.

The ideal individual for this role is an innovative thinker that possesses extensive knowledge of principles and practices of effective scientific communication, advanced skillsets in data visualization and scientific report production, and an understanding of health research, statistics and statistical analyses, and systematic reviewing. The individual in this role should also have a broad awareness and appreciation of how scientific evidence supports and enables decision-making processes. Finally, because the individual in this role will support program-wide activities, they should have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a large number of team members using remote communication and project management platforms (eg, Microsoft Teams). 

The DVI Specialist may work fully remotely, or in person at the VA Portland Health Care System in Portland, Oregon.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in data science/informatics, social or health science, public health, or similar field with prior coursework or other training in health research, statistics and statistical analysis, and/or scientific or technical writing (including effective scientific communication principles and practices).
  • Expertise in data visualization (ie, production of plots, infographics, tables, etc) using R or similar platforms.
  • Ability to proactively solicit and positively receive feedback, and iteratively improve output based on feedback.
  • Experience contributing to scientific manuscripts and presentations.
  • Aptitude for learning new software tools and technology.
  • Self-motivated with excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Outlook.
  • U.S. citizen.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in data science/informatics or similar field.
  • Extensive training in data science/informatics, health research, statistics and statistical analysis, scientific or technical writing, and/or evidence synthesis (systematic reviews, technology assessments, etc).
  • Experience producing visually appealing and well-organized scientific or technical reports.
  • Experience communicating research findings to non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to identify relationships in data to assist in providing insights.
  • Proficiency in Tableau or related interactive data visualization platform.

The VA Biorepository Brain Bank (VABBB) in VABHS has 1 full-time Project Coordinator opening for professionals passionate about serving Veterans and about public health and clinical research. VABBB research focuses on veterans with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and Gulf War Veteran’s Illness (GWVI).

The Project Coordinator will oversee implementation of research studies, analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data and data collection forms and surveys. The successful candidate will have a graduate degree in psychology/neuroscience/social work or related field, as well as general knowledge of research methodology. Previous experience with cognitive testing and psychiatric diagnostic interviewing is preferred, as is demonstrated experience in managing study projects.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Cooperative Studies Program (CSP) is a nationally renowned program that produces innovative solutions to Veteran and national healthcare problems through multi-site research studies.

The Seattle Epidemiologic Research and Information Center (ERIC) is a CSP epidemiology center conducting state-of-the-art health research on Veterans. The ERIC is seeking a full-time Research Coordinator to support the CSP Integrated Veteran Epidemiologic Study Data Resource (INVESTD-R).

INVESTD-R is a national open-science initiative that facilitates the responsible sharing of data, biospecimens, and other resources generated by epidemiologic research on Veterans. Increased access to these resources expands opportunities for qualified researchers to make scientific discoveries that benefit Veterans and the public. INVESTD-R is committed to using open science to advance research, while ensuring strong safeguards are in place to protect the privacy of participants and the confidentiality of their data.

The Research Coordinator will support multiple projects under the initiative, particularly the CSP Data and Biospecimen Repository, a new program-wide research repository that will share data and biospecimens from multiple CSP studies for future research. The position will also assist with other INVESTD-R projects, as needed.

Key duties:

  • Assist with the development of repository policies and procedures
  • Support the development, maintenance and tracking of key documentation and records, such as IRB documentation and data use agreements
  • Assist with the design, maintenance, and quality control of tracking systems and databases
  • Prepare and present reports related to the intake, transfer, and use of the data and biospecimens
  • Support data preparation activities of studies depositing data and biospecimens into the repository
  • Conduct initial recruitment activities, including mailings and phone calls, to enroll participants in research studies
  • Work closely with the INVESTD-R team and stakeholders to ensure effective collaboration, such as the INVESTD-R staff, data managers, study teams, lab personnel, and oversight bodies

Qualifications:

    • 1-4 years of relevant work experience (e.g., human subjects research, repository management, information management)
      • If BA/BS, 1-4 years of research-related experience required

    Primary responsibilities include identifying appropriate data elements from VA data sources, extracting and cleaning data, creating and curating research repository databases, and creating analytic data sets to be used to answer specific research and operational questions. Additional responsibilities may include mentoring staff, consulting with investigators about available VA data resources, and keeping abreast of new technologies needed to support the CSP’s future scientific and data needs.

    Key duties:

    • Collaborate with investigators and staff to identify key data elements from national and local VA data sources and create analytic files for staff epidemiologists and biostatisticians

    Since 2007, the ESP has focused on improving Veteran health and wellbeing through the production of tailored evidence synthesis products to support the implementation of effective practices. ESP’s high-quality, timely, and innovative syntheses have resulted in positive changes to clinical practice and policy and have informed quality improvement and research-focused initiatives at the national level. The program comprises 4 ESP Centers across the US and a Coordinating Center (CC) located in Portland, Oregon. Center Directors are VA clinicians and recognized leaders in the field of evidence synthesis with close ties to the AHRQ Evidence-based Practice Center Program. The CC manages national program operations, conducts initial scoping and feasibility assessment of systematic review topics nominated to the ESP, and houses the Rapid Response program, which responds to urgent evidence needs through the production of rapid evidence synthesis products (eg, ESP Evidence Briefs).

    POSITION DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

    As a Research Librarian with the ESP, the incumbent’s primary responsibility is to develop and conduct scientific literature searches on a variety of health services and clinical topics in collaboration with evidence synthesis researchers and subject matter experts. Specific duties for this position include:

    • Developing, documenting, and executing search strategies to facilitate 1) initial scoping of proposed systematic review topics, 2) production of systematic reviews assigned to ESP Centers, and 3) production of Rapid Response evidence synthesis products at the ESP CC.     The Seattle Network oDedicated Enrollment Sites (NODES) is recruiting a full-time position that will provide research coordination for multi-site clinical trials at VA Puget Sound. The Senior Research Study Coordinator will work closely with the Seattle NODES Research Program Manager, Center Directors and CSP study teams to assure the success of their studies. This position is based in Seattle, WA. The Seattle NODES is 1 of 23 NODES within CSP.

    Key Duties:

    • Under the direction of the NODES Research Program Manager, participates in all aspects of conducting clinical research which includes but is not limited to: feasibility assessments, screening/recruiting potential study participants, obtaining informed consent, enrollment, randomization, scheduling research appointments, data collection, study procedures, study surveys, collection/processing of biospecimens, reporting study adverse events/side effects and completing appropriate study documentation for multiple research studies in-person or over the telephone.  
    • Prepares study materials including, but not limited to, regulatory paperwork, informed consent document, case report forms (CRFs), enrollment logs, participant reimbursement, and drug/device accountability logs.
    • Establishes and organizes study files, including but not limited to, regulatory binders, study specific source documentation and other materials.
    • Works with the NODES Program Manager to manage the day-to-day activities of the portfolio of research studies including problem solving, communication and protocol management.

    • Provides training and technical guidance to research team members regarding regulations, policies, and procedures applicable to the conduct of the research.
    • Stays up to date on federal rules and regulations and VA, ORD, CSP, and local VA policies and procedures as they relate to research, privacy, and data sharing; oversees NODES regulatory processes; assists with responses to complex and nuanced regulatory inquiries, including responding to research incidents and preparing for audits

    Qualifications:

    Required:

    • BA/BS or higher degree in a scientific- or health-related field
    • 3-5 years of work experience in clinical, epidemiological, or health services research

    The VA CSP Seattle Epidemiologic Research and Information Center (ERIC), is hiring a full-time Research Data Analyst to work with an experienced and growing group of researchers committed to high-quality epidemiologic investigations using large, complex health data to address Veteran health issues.

    The Research Data Analyst will support several large, national, epidemiologic research studies as well as smaller-scale, investigator-initiated projects. This position will work closely with the Center’s senior data manager, biostatisticians, and scientific personnel in the conduct of observational epidemiologic studies addressing environmental and occupational exposures, pharmacotherapy, specific medical conditions, and genetics/genomics. Some of the current research projects at the ERIC include pulmonary health, cardiovascular disease, mental health, back pain, dysvascular amputations, and COVID-19 associated outcomes.

    Primary responsibilities include identifying appropriate data elements from VA data sources, extracting and cleaning data, creating and curating research repository databases, and creating analytic data sets to be used to answer specific research and operational questions. Additional responsibilities may include mentoring staff, consulting with investigators about available VA data resources, and keeping abreast of new technologies needed to support the CSP’s future scientific and data needs.

    Key duties:

    • Collaborate with investigators and staff to identify key data elements from national and local VA data sources and create analytic files for staff epidemiologists and biostatisticians
    • Create data specifications, design complex data extract systems, and write supporting documentation
    • Design, create, and load relational databases, tables, and files to meet the needs of study staff and support ongoing national projects
    • Curate large genomic datasets and extract study data from these as required

    Qualifications:

    • Experience with a statistical programming language such as R, SAS or Stata.
