Kaspersky experts have brought to light a poorly detected SessionManager backdoor that was set up as a malicious module within the Internet Information Services (IIS), a popular web server edited by Microsoft. Once propagated, SessionManager enables a wide range of malicious activities, starting from collecting emails to complete control over the victim’s infrastructure. First leveraged in late March 2021, the newly discovered backdoor has hit governmental institutions and NGOs in Africa, South Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Most of the targeted organizations are still compromised to date.

Phishing simulator data from Kaspersky Security Awareness Platform shows that workers tend not to notice pitfalls hidden in emails devoted to corporate issues and delivery problem notifications. Almost one in five (16% to 18%) clicked the link in the email templates imitating these phishing attacks.

Kaspersky has become a shareholder of Motive Neuromorphic Technologies, a company specializing in neuromorphic computing technologies, with a 15% stake. The organizations’ joint development efforts are aimed at creating new opportunities for machine learning-based solutions: self-learning systems and smart devices of the future.

Kaspersky researchers reported an ongoing campaign carried out by an advanced persistent threat (APT) group dubbed ToddyCat, which focuses on compromising multiple Microsoft Exchange servers using two malicious programs – Samurai backdoor and Ninja Trojan. The campaign primarily targeted government and military sectors in Europe and Asia.

With the rise of cybercrime as a service business model, the information necessary to organize an attack is in demand among cybercriminals. Kaspersky’s experts analyzed nearly 200 posts on the dark web offering to buy information for initial access to companies’ systems. The average cost for access to a big company’s systems lies between $2000 and $4000, which is relatively inexpensive compared to the potential damage it could cause targeted businesses. Such services are of prime interest to ransomware operators, whose profits could reach up to a whopping $40 million a year. These and other findings can be found in the new Kaspersky report, ‘How much does access to corporate infrastructure cost?’.

Kaspersky has updated its Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) product for enterprises with mature IT security processes.

Kaspersky delivered stable business growth in 2021 and increased its global non-audited International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) revenue to a total of $752 million*, representing a 6.5% YOY increase*. Following the second year of the pandemic, the company achieved positive results driven primarily by the B2B segment with large increases in enterprise sales.

Routers are essential for Wi-Fi connections, with millions of new devices set up daily in homes and workplaces. According to analysis conducted by Kaspersky, over 500 vulnerabilities were discovered in routers in 2021, including 87 critical ones.
