SE Labs Investor Intelligence Insights

Start-up companies try to solve problems. Sometimes they provide solutions for problems that don’t exist, and sometimes their solutions don’t work. Due diligence is important to avoid both situations, but it’s hard to do thoroughly, particularly in areas where there’s not a great deal of real expertise.

How do you know if a cyber security start-up is going to bring in great returns when even the largest security firms don’t fully understand the threats that users face?

Your intelligence

The cyber security world is dripping in snake oil. Some of the security companies known to have performed very well are based on technologies that don’t function anywhere as effectively as they claim. If you just look at the numbers you might say, “well, who cares? They sold their snake oil effectively and paid their investors !”

There are always going to be success stories where someone faked it through to an IPO. But it better for investors (and the world as a whole) to identify and support the best technologies. This reduces your risk, increases the chance of success and means better security for everyone.

If you’re going to choose 10 start-ups to work with, make sure they have a genuinely promising product that actually works.

Our insight

SE Labs was selected by Tech Nation as one of the 20 most promising cyber security companies in the UK. We continue to engage with UK cyber start-ups, offering experience, advice and testing services.

SE Labs connections within the cyber security industry are wide- and deep-reaching. With over 25 years of experience in testing security, Simon Edwards leads a team that works with all of the major (and many minor) security brands. Many of those have moved from start-up phases through to major acquisitions during our partnership.

We have hands-on interaction with the products themselves; enjoy candid discussions with engineers and CTOs; and conduct private discussions with the world’s leading analysts, who are also hungry for data to add to their opinions.

We publish reports for everyone to read, but there’s so much more information waiting for you to discover. Let us help you with your due diligence.

Case Study: Morphisec

Morphisec funding round

MORPHISEC ANNOUNCES $12M SERIES B FUNDING ROUND
Investment to Further Accelerate Worldwide Growth; Investors Include Jerusalem Venture Partners, Orange Digital Ventures, GE, Deutsche Telekom Capital Partners

Morphisec, the leader in Moving Target Defense, today announced it has raised $12 million Series B round of funding. The round features new investor Orange Digital Ventures, the digital investment arm of Orange (Euronext Paris: ORA, NYSE: ORAN), as well as existing Morphisec investors Jerusalem Venture Partners (“JVP”), GE (NYSE: GE) and Deutsche Telekom Capital Partners.

Morphisec was recognized in 2017 by SE Labs with a 100% efficacy performance rate against every attack (evasive malware and exploits) detonated in the lab.

Additional investors in Morphisec include La Maison, Portage Partners, OurCrowd, Kodem Growth Partners and Evolution Equity Partners.

Morphisec’s entirely new approach to endpoint protection makes it the only solution that can protect during major operating system patching gaps (like those necessary based on the Spectre and Meltdown exploits), against zero-day attacks (e.g., WannaCry), fileless malware and more, all while providing significant operational and business benefits, including continuity across patch cycles without the need for updates, zero false positives and no performance degradation. Morphisec supports endpoints and servers in physical, VDI and hybrid environments.

Morphisec’s continued growth has been substantial, having achieved over 1000% growth in 2017, with its technology deployed on hundreds of thousands of endpoints. The company announced its Series A funding round in 2015, was named a Gartner Cool Vendor in 2016 and was recognized in 2017 by SE Labs with a 100% efficacy performance rate against every attack (evasive malware and exploits) detonated in the lab.
