I can do some (probably broken) Spanish too, FWIW, but the languages are quite similar indeed, and we can often communicate in Portuñol, though they are different languages, much farther apart than say just different accents. far enough for there to be yet another language in between (Galician). as for your question, reportedly, average Portuguese speakers have an easier time grasping Spanish than the other way round. My guess is that that's because Spanish is more regular than Portuguese.
