As announced previously, for the first time in WordPress history the 2021-2022 Annual Meetup Surveys will be distributed in a variety of languages! This will enable more WordPress meetup organizers and attendees around the world to respond to the survey, which is of particular importance as the Community team seeks to reactive the meetup program.

How You Can Help

Are you available to help translate the surveys from English to another language? In particular, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian and German are languages spoken by many in the WordPress community and to which the surveys are not yet translated.

How to Translate

These are the source documents to translate:

Step 1: Check the central translation tracker to confirm which translations are already complete or underway.

Step 2: Enter your information into the tracker. This will help avoid duplicate efforts.

Step 3: Create a new Google Doc for your translation.

  • Please ensure that the sharing permissions allow for public access.
  • Paste the document link into column E of the central translation tracker.

Step 4: When the translation is complete, please record this in column F of the tracker and on the second tab of the tracker.

Timeline

We aim to have all translations complete by Saturday, July 2 so that they can be distributed during the first week of July.

Ideas to Reactivate your Meetup Group

As communities around the world return to in-person events, there is a lot of competition for people’s attention. In the midst of this, some meetup organizers are facing a new dilemma: how to reignite their local community’s interest?

How do we know this?

This year at WCEU 2022 Contributor Day, we sat around a table with current and future organizers from around the world and talked. We shared struggles and concerns, and brainstormed the following approaches to reignite interest and re-engage our meetups:

Work together on a common project. Work on something suggested by a meetup member. Maybe a member is stuck, and the meetup can rally to help solve their problem. Whatever it is, allowing attendees to be involved in choosing will help keep everyone engaged.

Help a WordPress.org contributor team. Contributor teams are composed of people just like you who want to be part of building WordPress. These teams are simple to connect with on the Making WordPress SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/. channel. Collaborating with them can be a great way to link your local community with the global community, all while helping WordPress grow.

Plan a do_action event. Speaking of connecting with communities, do_actiondo_action do_action hackathons are community-organised events that are focussed on using WordPress to give deserving charitable organisations their own online presence. Learn more on doaction.org. events are a great way to connect with your local group. Whether you take on multiple projects or simply focus on one, do_action events allow participants to grow everyone’s skills, build relationships, and have fun, all while helping a local nonprofit.

Hold a show and tell. People in general like to talk about themselves and what they’re working on and this is a great way to introduce, or reintroduce, community members to each other. This format also showcases different ways to use WordPress while allowing participants to see the range of skills within their local community.

Use the free resources from Learn.WordPress.org. The WordPress.org Training Team continually creates a variety of resources that the community can use. Choose from workshops, lesson plans, interactive social learning spaces, and more. This is a wonderful way to expand your meetup’s knowledge with minimal effort on your part.

Consider a multi-format meetup. There’s no set rule about what a meetup must include. Though meetups often feature talks, that’s not the only option. Consider pairing a short talk with Help Desk time, or a short talk along with Show and Tell. Maybe your first few meetups consist of a longer social time and brainstorming session about what to include in future events.

Host multiple types of events in a month, at varying times. Some people like talks. Others want a social activity. Maybe they enjoy co-working and a chance to discuss problems as they pop up. Want even more to consider? Check out our list of event formats in the Meetup Organizer Handbook.

On a final note, I want to remind you that all members of the Meetup group can host an event. This can make it easier to host events at various times, which gives all community members more flexibility to attend.

Plus, once attendees start hosting, they are more likely to become co-organizers and help with the work of running a meetup!

Recap: Community Deputy Training – All About Community Deputies

DeputyDeputy Community Deputies are a team of people all over the world who review WordCamp and Meetup applications, interview lead organizers, and generally keep things moving at WordCamp Central. Training started with an introduction of each deputy. This training is based on a P2 Tuesday Training: All About Community Deputies. The training covers topics such as building relationships, being a resource, and communicating with the community. The deputiesDeputy Community Deputies are a team of people all over the world who review WordCamp and Meetup applications, interview lead organizers, and generally keep things moving at WordCamp Central. Find more about deputies in our Community Deputy Handbook. in attendance are given an overview of the program and its goals. They are then given a chance to ask questions and share their own experiences.

Training key takeaways:-

  • Angela was expressing views on how the community was impacted by the pandemic. She said that the pandemic had changed the way people interact with each other. This has been a challenge for the Community Deputies. However, community deputies are also busy during pandemic assisting with online events.
  • Community Deputies can help solve problems and build relationships within the community. Deputy can also help coordinate events and activities, and provide support and assistance to WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. In addition, the Deputy can help connect people with resources and information and facilitate communication between community members.

It’s okay to say”I have no idea. Let’s figure this out together”

  • Deputies shared their experiences as new deputies and the challenges faced. But the deputies all agreed that the satisfaction of knowing they were helping to keep the peace was worth it. They also shared stories about discovering new tasks and learning how to do them.
  • Deputies may need a TrelloTrello Project management system using the concepts of boards and cards to organize tasks in a sane way. This is what the make.wordpress.com/marketing team uses for example: https://trello.com/b/8UGHVBu8/wp-marketing. board to look at tasks that are available for them. This may help new deputies to look at current tasks and work on them. The deputies could then choose which task they want to work on. This would help deputies to stay organized and to keep track of their progress and discover where to contribute. @_dorsvenabili will experiment on it and we can review it every month during the Deputy Training session.
  • Some deputies noted that it would be helpful to have a roster or guide of what tasks need to be completed and who to ask.

Announcement: Reactivating Meetup Venue Support Funds

Learn more about Meetups in our Meetup Organizer Handbook. reactivate in communities around the world, WordPress Community SupportWordPress Community Support WordPress Community Support PBC is a subsidiary of WordPress Foundation. It is created specifically to be the financial and legal support for WordCamps, WordPress Meetup groups, and any additional “official” events organized within the WordPress Community Events program. (WPCSWPCS The collection of PHP_CodeSniffer rules (sniffs) used to format and validate PHP code developed for WordPress according to the WordPress Coding Standards. May also be an acronym referring to the Accessibility, PHP, JavaScript, CSS, HTML, etc. coding standards as published in the WordPress Coding Standards Handbook.) will now restart its meetup venue support funds. Venue support is an important part of helping in-person meetups reactivate, particularly as venues tend to be more expensive at this time. Simultaneously, we need to be responsible with WordPress Community Support funds. To this end, we ask that all meetups first seek a free or donated venue. If no suitable free or donated venue is available, you may request venue support from WPCS for an affordable, inclusive meeting space.

What makes for an inclusive venue?

One of our jobs as community organizers is to create a 100% welcoming space for everyone. This includes meeting in venues that are wheelchair accessible, and close to public transportation when possible. You should avoid venues with religious or political affiliations, or any other space where someone might feel uncomfortable or unwelcome.

You can request meetup venue support by submitting the form on this page.

If you are going to ask for WPCS to cover the costs of a meetup venue, the following conditions must be met:

  • Your group is on the WordPress chapter account at meetup.com or has been similarly recognized as official by this team.
  • Your group is currently following the 5 good-faith rules.
  • You are unable to find a donated venue.
  • Your proposed new venue meets minimum requirements for safety, adequate seating, and accessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). Monthly Deputy / Organizer Training and Mini Sprints

We are planning to run a Zoom call every month for the DeputyDeputy Community Deputies are a team of people all over the world who review WordCamp and Meetup applications, interview lead organizers, and generally keep things moving at WordCamp Central. The idea is to provide continuous training to deputies and to work together on the issues that require collaboration and discussion. 

The Zoom call will be an hour-long, and we will provide training on a variety of topics that deputies need to know. We will also work on any tasks that require collaboration and discussion. This will be a great opportunity for deputies to get the training they need and to work together on issues that are important to the department.

Objective

The objective of this training and sprints is to provide continuous training to community deputiesDeputy Community Deputies are a team of people all over the world who review WordCamp and Meetup applications, interview lead organizers, and generally keep things moving at WordCamp Central. Find more about deputies in our Community Deputy Handbook. and to work together on the issues that require collaboration and discussions. This will involve meetupMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). Learn more about Meetups in our Meetup Organizer Handbook. and local chapter organizers in selected sessions for training and coaching. The goal is to provide deputies with the skills and knowledge they need to be effective leaders in their communities and to help meetup and local chapter organizers learn how to work together to resolve issues.

Format & Time

This will be a Zoom video call. The community team currently meets every first Thursday of the month. We plan to conduct this training on the third Thursday of the month at the same time as our monthly meeting.

First session

The Zoom meeting link will be shared on the event day.  For a start, we will run these sessions in either APAC/EMEA OR Americas timezone.

Report: Inclusion and Diverse Speaker Workshops May 2022

To accommodate the WCUSWCUS WordCamp US. The US flagship WordCamp event. organizers, we held short discussions on two different dates (May 10 and 14, 2022) about the videos on Learn WordPress. Also invited: All event organizers, contributors, and the mentorsMentor Someone who has already organised a WordCamp and has time to meet with their assigned mentee every 2 weeks, they talk over where they should be in their timeline, help them to identify their issues, and also identify solutions for their issues. in the #diverse-speaker-support channel.
