Research Recruitment

Our research studies aim to better understand and develop interventions for suicidal thoughts and behaviors and associated conditions such as traumatic brain injury (TBI), trauma and stress. We hope that these studies will lead to new treatment and prevention strategies to improve care for Veterans.

There are opportunities for you to participate in these research studies. Some studies are just one visit, while others occur over multiple visits. All studies provide compensation for your time.

Perspectives of Female Veterans, VHA Providers, and Family Members on Preventing Firearm-Inflicted Suicide --- COMIRB #19-0255

The goal of this study is to improve firearm-related suicide prevention efforts for women Veterans by gathering information from three participant groups:

  1. Women Veterans who have owned firearm(s) or lived in a home with firearm(s) as adults and who have experienced thoughts of suicide or suicide attempt(s) in their lifetime
  2. Partners/spouses of women Veterans who have had firearm(s) in their household while living together
  3. VA outpatient mental health or primary care providers who serve women Veterans (part or all of patients served)

By talking to individuals from the above groups, we hope to learn more to ensure that firearm lethal means safety interventions for suicide prevention are tailored to the needs and experiences of women Veterans and that helpful resources are available for family members and healthcare providers.

If you belong to one the groups listed above, please consider participating in this study to help women Veterans.

If you are interested in participating, please call our Research Coordinator, Suzanne Thomas, at 720-723-6555, or visit our study website.

Facilitating Assessment of At-Risk Sailors using Technology (FAAST)

Study Leader: Lisa A. Brenner, PhD, ABPP
Research Study Clinical Lead: Lisa M. Betthauser, MBA, PhD
Research Study Operations Lead: Kelly A. Stearns-Yoder, MA

Description:
Naval personnel experience high levels of anxiety, stress, and suicidal thoughts while deployed. We want to find better ways to address Sailors’ mental health needs, particularly during post-deployment transitions. We are interested in exploring how a smartphone application (app) can be used to assess emotional distress in Sailors, as well as evaluating Sailors’ experiences and preferences in using the app.

Current outcomes: This study is actively recruiting.

For more information, contact the Study PI, Lisa Brenner, at (303) 724-4588, or visit the FAAST study website: www.mirecc.va.gov/visn19/research/faast.asp.
