Job Details

Safeguarding is more than a legal duty to Canterbury Christ Church University. The wellbeing of students and its broader community is woven into the DNA of the institution. It approaches Safeguarding within the spirit and ethos of its mission and values, especially its deep commitment to equality and diversity.

Canterbury Christ Church University seeks to appoint a Head of Safeguarding. This role takes responsibility for all Safeguarding work across the University, including sexual harassment, misconduct and violence and the Prevent duty. The Head of Safeguarding will work very closely with colleagues with students on professional programmes, including education, medicine, health and social care.

The remit and role is broad. The Head of Safeguarding works on the frontline by actively supervising safeguarding cases and designing safety plans in collaboration with the Head of Student Wellbeing. In addition, they will operate strategically through reviewing and implementing best practices, advising and supporting staff training and nurturing a commitment and passion for safeguarding across the whole University. They will also act collaboratively with colleagues within the newly established Directorate of Student Resolution and Student Protection, where the post sits.

The University is 18 months into a new safeguarding framework which significantly enhanced the whole institution approach to safeguarding by creating a community and network of safeguarding leads. But to continuously deliver outstanding safeguarding and care, there is always a need for more work. The new Head of Safeguarding will review progress, recommend further improvements, and ensure refreshed approaches are implemented. It will include building and developing staff training already in place.

Canterbury Christ Church University welcomes applications from compassionate leaders with expertise in safeguarding and experience through embedding a culture of safeguarding in a multilayer organisation. They will have in-depth knowledge of leading complex safeguarding cases and developing collaborative approaches and effective processes. People focused, they will be excellent relationship builders, enthused by the University’s values and ready to champion inclusion and diversity.

Higher Education sector experience is ideal, but applications from those with relevant experience in other sectors are welcome.

Canterbury Christ Church University offers a supportive working environment, friendly colleagues, commitment to flexible working opportunities and a relocation package where required. The University strives to be an equal opportunities employer and encourages applications from people of minority ethnic origin, all faiths and none, and people with disabilities.
