Informative talk about the EXTREME-REEF project for International Jazz Day

The Bioplastic Lab, which develops its research at the MIES Ramon Margalef, has been invited to give a talk at the Environment Fair organized on the occasion of the X edition of International Jazz Day.

The event will be held on April 30 in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento de Alicante, and visibility will be given to NGOs and local entities that work for the environment from different fields. During the Fair, the Bioplastic Lab will disseminate climate change issues encompassed within the project “EXTREME-REEF. Research for adaptation: Knowing the effects of extreme weather events on coastal reefs”, which has the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge.

27/04/2022

At the beginning of the year, Carlos Sanz, a MIES researcher, together with other researchers, published the first scientific article derived from the results obtained during the “EXTREME-REEF. Research for adaptation: Understanding the effects of extreme weather events on coastal reefs”.

Climate change is changing the regime of extreme events, which are key in structuring biological communities. In this study, storms with different intertidal and subtidal disturbance regimes were simulated, also taking into account a different degree of anthropogenic pressures. It concluded that the resistance and resilience of an ecosystem to an extreme climatic event can have more damaging ecological consequences in areas that suffer severe anthropic pressure.

The EXTREME-REEF project has the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.

In memory of Antonio Escarré

On March 5, Antonio Escarré Esteve, Professor of Ecology at the University of Alicante and founder of our Ramon Margalef Institute, passed away. Antonio Escarré was the Minister of Education, Culture and Research and the first Minister of the Environment of the Valencian Community. Tireless, committed, full of ingenuity, Escarré made an essential contribution to the development of Terrestrial Ecology in Spain, to the creation of the Department of Ecology and the MIES and to the implementation of the Biology Degree in our University, to the development of the Doctoral Program of the University of Alicante and the University of Pinar del Río, Cuba, on sustainable development of tropical forests, to the creation of the Center for Environmental Studies of the Mediterranean (CEAM), to endless instruments, supports and support for research and teaching, for researchers, teachers and students... It is difficult to describe the magnitude of the loss; it is also to summarize all the good things he has left us. Antonio's friends and colleagues have written these days about many of the countless displays of his commitment, generosity and genius. Here we leave you some of these writings. Escarré will always be in our memory. How fortunate to have treated you.

The XII European Conference on Ecological Restoration will be held online at the UA between September 7th and 10th.

The meeting coincides with the discussion about a future European Restoration Law that the European Commission is developing within the framework of the European Biodiversity Strategy for 2030.

This XII Conference of the European Chapter of the International Society for Ecological Restoration (SER Europe) motto is "A new green deal for nature in Europe: science and political action towards socio-ecological restoration". It is organized by the Department of Ecology of the University of Alicante and the Multidisciplinary Institute for Environmental Studies "Ramón Margalef", with the support of various Institutions.

In the closing session a Declaration was presented: 'Scientists Support for an Ambitious European Restoration Law' that aims to support a future ambitious restoration law that represents a significant change in the commitment of the European Union in the field of restoration and that allows to obtain the benefits that restoration can bring in the fight against climate change and adaptation to it, in the protection of biodiversity and in the improvement of the population's living conditions.

The 13th European Conference on Ecological Restoration will take place in Alicante in September 2022.
