Classifications and Crosswalks

The Employment Projections (EP) program publishes the classification systems used to produce the employment projections. In addition, EP publishes selected crosswalks between EP employment projections and data from other sources.

Industry sectoring plan (XLSX)

This classification system is used for projections of:

Commodity and industry output
Industry employment

The system uses definitions found in the 2017 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS).

NOTE: Industries in this system are limited to sectors for which EP projects output. EP publishes industry employment for additional sectors in the National Employment Matrix (see Industry employment directory below).

Industry employment directory (XLSX)

To develop the National Employment Matrix industry structure, BLS staff combines the structures used to report estimates from the Current Employment Statistics (CES), the Occupational Employment and Wages Statistics (OEWS), and Current Populations Survey (CPS) programs. Data from OEWS, CES, and CPS used to construct the matrix are coded to the 2017 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS).(1)

Occupational employment directory (XLSX)

The occupational structure of the Matrix is based on the structure used by the OEWS program, which is currently using a hybrid classification system as it transitions from the 2010 to the 2018 Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system.
