Two Center for Homeland Defense and Security alumni, Catherine Bernstein and Doug Reed, have been recognized for their work in the disparate fields of volunteer trauma victims assistance and county-level emergency management.

CHDS Master’s alumnus has been recognized with top awards for playing a key role in the Operation Warp Speed initiative aimed at rapidly developing a COVID-19 vaccine. Dr. Eric Powell was chosen to receive three awards from U.S. Health and Human Services for his work as a senior science advisor for the Operation Warp Speed Countermeasures Acceleration Group’s Security and Assurance Team at the Vaccine Operations Center.

While the connection between CHDS and the nation’s universities with homeland security and emergency management programs is extensive, Sam Houston State University and Idaho State University have taken that to a whole other level. The two programs, led by Master's alums Nadav Morag and Laurie Holien, feature a total of 27 CHDS alumni, current and former faculty, and even a few CHDS co-founders.

Former Texas School District Director of Safety, Security, and Threat Management Bruno Dias is continuing his work on targeted violence prevention at the federal level, and he credits the CHDS for the opportunity. The Master's alum joined the Department of Homeland Security’s Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships (CP3) as an Associate Director in April 2022, where he oversees the field operations across the Midwest region.
