Anupamaa is an Indian Hindi-language television drama series that premiered on 13 July 2020 on Star Plus.[3] It is streams digitally on Disney+ Hotstar. Produced by Rajan Shahi and Deepa Shahi under Director's Kut Productions, it stars Rupali Ganguly, Gaurav Khanna and Sudhanshu Pandey.[4] It is based on Star Jalsha's Bengali series Sreemoyee.[5]

Premise

The show traces the life of Anupamaa, a self-sacrificing homemaker, and her journey of overcoming all problems and creating a new identity for herself.

The story revolves around a Gujarati homemaker Anupamaa Shah. She's having a family-oriented and self-sacrificing nature. She's being humiliated by her family for being a mere housewife and her incomplete degree except her father-in-law Hasmukh Shah,younger son Samar, her younger sister-in-law Dolly, her husband Sanjay, and Dolly and Sanjay's daughter, Meenali

Anupamaa's husband Vanraj is having a secret extra-marital affair with his colleague Kavya Gandhi for the past eight years in the disguise of friendship. Her daughter Pakhi and elder son Paritosh even replaces her with Kavya for Pakhi's school competition and meeting with Paritosh's girlfriend Kinjal Dave's parents. But Kinjal's mother Rakhi starts sensing the relationship between Vanraj and Kavya. Samar also meets Kavya's USA returned niece Nandini Iyer and they instantly turn into friends for their love towards Anupamaa. Soon Anupamaa's best friend Devika Mehta learns about the affair and informs Anupamaa about the same along with Kavya's husband Aniruddh but she refuses to believe them and expresses her faith in Vanraj and Kavya. As Paritosh and Kinjal gets engaged, family start preparing for Anupamaa and Vanraj's silver jubilee anniversary and Nandini comes to know about the affair and informs Paritosh about the same. But he gets manipulated by Vanraj. On the wedding anniversary day Anupamaa sees Vanraj and Kavya getting intimate and gets heartbroken. She decides to live her life on her own terms and Samar also breaks all ties with Vanraj after learning about the same.
101-200"Affair getting exposed in front of family, Samar's proposal to Nandini, Anupamaa's decision to divorce Vanraj and Pakhi's depression"
Soon affair starts getting revealed in front of more and more people, Samar falls for Nandini to which she initially declines and they decide to continue as friends. Rakhi exposes the affair in front of whole family leaving them heartbroken. Vanraj also leaves home after Hasmukh refuses to support him and family suffers financial crisis leading Anupamaa to start working as cooking and dance teacher. Paritosh and Kinjal elope and marry and Vanraj meets with an accident and starts realising his feelings for Anupamaa. Samar also learns about Nandini's past accident which left her sterile due to removal of her uterus and her hidden feelings for him. As Vanraj tries to confess his love, Anupamaa rebukes him and he goes back to Kavya and loses his job. Thus Anupamaa decides to divorce Vanraj to set herself free from a caged relationship. Pakhi suffers from depression after seeing Kavya's real nature and Anupamaa and Vanraj decides to live together until Pakhi recoveres.

While Nandini confesses her love towards Samar, Kavya gets molested and brought back to Shah house. Samar also vows to start "Anupamaa Dance Academy " to fulfil his, Anupamaa and Nandini's dream. As divorce date approaches, Vanraj fears that he will lose his family and Anupamaa leaving behind a letter. Later Anupamaa gets a call from Dr. Advait Khanna that Vanraj is in Blissdom's Wellness Resort of Surat. Their Anupamaa gets diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Samar and Nandini's engagement gets called off after truth about Nandini's sterility is revealed and Anupamaa supports them. Anupamaa urges Vanraj to divorce her to set herself free, Kavya also divorces Aniruddh. She starts preparing for her wedding with Vanraj and threatens to send whole family behind the bars under fake allegations as Vanraj runs away from the marriage. After his arrival, Anupamaa confronts him for lacking courage and commitment and he gets married to Kavya. Soon Anupamaa undergoes an emergency surgery and post her recovery everyone return to Ahmedabad and Hasmukh asks Anupamaa to stay back as she will be the integral part of the family forever to which she agrees. As Kavya and Anupamaa lives under same roof, problems arises and she tries to turn family members against her but fails miserably.

Samar and Nandini establish "Anupamaa Dance Academy" with Anupamaa's ideas and family rejoices. But Vanraj and Kavya lose their jobs again and Anupamaa advices them to open a café in her dance academy and names it as "Leela Ka Café". Kavya tries to turn Pakhi against Anupamaa but fails and then turns Vanraj against Anupamaa and it works as Vanraj instead of feeling grateful taunts Anupamaa for her help. Anuj Kapadia, an NRI business tycoon from USA relocates to India and turns out to be Anupamaa and Devika's batchmate and friend. It is revealed that Anuj loved Anupamaa since twenty-six years and remained unmarried. He instantly becomes friend with Samar and other members of Shah family after he saves the latter from an accident. He gives Anupamaa a business partnership for his future project to which she agrees with the support of her well-wishers from the family. Seeing Anupamaa and Anuj's growing friendship, Vanraj seathes in jealousy. Meanwhile Rohan, Nandini's former boyfriend and obsessive lover also returns in her life to win her back and tortures Samar and Nandini for the same and even attempts Samar and Anupamaa's murders. But he gets caught red-handed by Anuj and leaves their lives fearing to be jailed for his father's scams.
401-500"Anupamaa leaves Shah house, Anuj confesses his unrequited love for Anupamaa, arrival of Malvika Kapadia and Anuj loses his business"
As time passes, Vanraj, Leela, Paritosh and Kavya starts character assassinating Anupamaa for her growing friendship with Anuj. Tired with all taunts and accusations she leaves the house and Samar also follows her. They starts living in a rented house. Kavya deceitfully makes Anupamaa, Dolly and Vanraj sign the property papers on her name. However things doesn't goes smooth and Anuj confesses his unrequited love towards Anupamaa after getting irritated by her repeated character assassination by some family members unaware of the fact that Anupamaa overheard his confession. Initially shattered, Samar and Gopichandra covinces them to continue their relationship as friends. But Leela crosses her limits by brutally humiliating Hasmukh in front of whole family and he leaves the house. While trying to bring him back, Vanraj asks Kavya to leave Shah house with him and in a fit of rage she reveals about tricking everyone signing property papers on her name. This makes Vanraj vengeful and on the day of Hasmukh and Leela's golden jubilee anniversary celebration, he handovers divorce papers to her shocking everyone but she refuses to divorce him and returns back property to Hasmukh's name. Later Anuj meets with an accident while fighting some goons and Anupamaa starts realising her feelings for him. While Samar proposes Nandini for marriage, Vanraj shocks everyone by signing a business partnership "Vanika Teamworks" with a girl named Malvika. But she turns out to be Anuj's younger sister and it is revealed that Anuj is an adopted child to Kapadias which makes Vanraj plot to steal his whole Kapadia Empire through Malvika. As the time passes, it is revealed that Anuj's parents died in a road accident due to his mistake and in his attempt to save Malvika from her gold-digger boyfriend Akshay, he got her married but that guy used to beat her which made her a depression patient. Kavya leaves which leads to a major argument between Samar and Nandini fuelled by Vanraj. But they clears their misunderstandings after she returns and Anupamaa appoints her in Anuj's company to keep an eye over Vanraj so that he doesn't use Malvika for his own selfish needs. Vanraj manipulates Malvika against Anuj leading Anuj to transfer whole Kapadia Empire on her name and he decides to start a new chapter with Anupamaa by working over her dance academy.
501–present"End of Samar and Nandini's lovestory, Kinjal's pregnancy, Anupamaa and Anuj's marriage, Arrival of Kapadia family"
On the night of Valentine's Day while Anupamaa proposes Anuj, Nandini leaves Samar due to her insecurities regarding marriage and returns back to USA. This leaves him heartbroken and he vows to never believe in love again and decides to focus on his dance career and dance academy for his mother. Later Shahs prepare to celebrate Anupamaa's forty-fifth birthday and Kinjal reveals about her pregnancy making everyone happy. But Paritosh refuses to take baby's responsibility and calls him a bad omen ultimately facing wrath of whole family and Samar takes the fatherly responsibilities of the child. Soon Anupamaa announces her decision to marry Anuj much to Vanraj, Leela, Kavya, Paritosh, Pakhi and Rakhi's anger. As the marriage rituals starts, Malvika fires Vanraj, Kavya and Paritosh for unprofessionalism and Samar convinces Pakhi and Paritosh to attend Anupamaa's wedding wholeheartedly and Kavya also joins team Anupamaa. As wedding approaches Hasmukh gets diagnosed with heart disease and he decides to delay the surgery till marriage and it gets revealed in front of everyone. He promises to keep good care of himself and Vanraj's ego gets hurts with Samar, Pakhi and Paritosh's growing affection with Anuj. Anuj promises to remain as a father figure and friend to them only till the time Vanraj won't come between Anupamaa and her children. Malvika leaves back to USA for some legal issues and Anuj asks Anupamaa's children to call him their "Anuj Buddy". Later Anupamaa promises that no one can come between a mother and her children and takes a promise in return to understand her. Later Leela also joins the wedding wholeheartedly and Anupamaa and Anuj gets married in a grand way. Later Anuj transfers signing authority of Kapadia Empire to Anupamaa and newly weds decide to adopt an orphan Anu from Mumbai's orphanage. Soon Anuj's cousin Ankush arrives with his wife Barkha while their children Sara and Adhik meets Samar and Pakhi respectively.

Production

Development

In February 2020, Rajan Shahi, the producer of Aai Kuthe Kay Karte announced his plan to produce its Hindi remake Anupamaa stating, "This interesting concept around a mother's journey has been so inspirational that Star wants to bring it in Hindi too".[6]

In early August 2020, the cast of the series recorded a special song for the Raksha Bandhan sequence titled "Aaj Rakhi Nau Tyohaar Chhe" (transl. Today is Raksha Bandhan's festival) in their own voices (in fusion of Gujarati, Hindi and English languages).[7]

Casting

Rupali Ganguly was cast as the protagonist Anupamaa, returning to television after seven years.[8] Sudhanshu Pandey was cast as Anupamaa's husband, Vanraj Shah.[9] Paras Kalnawat, Muskaan Bamne, Aashish Mehrotra, Alpana Buch and Arvind Vaidya were cast as Samar Shah, Pakhi Shah, Paritosh Shah, Leela Shah and Hasmukh Shah respectively.[10][11][12][13][14][15] Madhavi Gogate, Ekta Saraiya, Paresh Bhatt, Stuti Zakarde, Mehul Nisar and Bhakti Chauhan were cast to play Kanta Joshi, Dolly Shah Dhamecha, Sanjay Dhamecha, Meenali Dhamecha, Bhavesh Joshi and Jhilmil respectively.[16][17][18] However, days before the filming resumed after the COVID-19 outbreak in late June, Additi Gupta was confirmed to be infected with the virus.[19][20] She was replaced by Madalsa Sharma Chakraborty and the sequences earlier shot by Gupta were reshot by Chakraborty.[21] Days after premiering in July 2020, Shekhar Shukla, Nidhi Shah and Farrukh Saeed were signed to play Jignesh, Kinjal Dave and Pramod Dave respectively.[22][23][24] Tasneem Sheikh, Anagha Bhosale were and Rushad Rana were cast as Rakhi Dave, Nandini Iyer and Aniruddh Gandhi.[25][26][27]

In April 2021, Apurva Agnihotri[28] joined the cast as Dr. Advait Khanna for a cameo and completed his role in June 2021.[29]

In late August 2021 Gaurav Khanna was cast as Anuj Kapadia.[30] Khanna said that he found his character very "stylish and suave, yet rooted in motherland".[31] In September 2021, Deepak Gheewala was cast to play Gopichandra Karodia.[32] In the same month, Varun Sharma was cast as Rohan to play a cameo and he finished off his role in October 2021. Next, Savita Prabhune replaced Madhavi Gogate as Kanta Joshi in late October 2021.[33] In December 2021, actress Aneri Vajani joined the cast to play Malvika Kapadia.[34]

In March 2022, Anagha Bhosale playing Nandini announced her decision to take a break from acting, however, she announced that she never quitted the show and can come back in future,[35] but later confirmed her decision to quit acting forever thus making an end to Nandini's character and already shot her last scene in February 2022.[36][37] Later in the same month, Aneri Vajani playing Malvika also announced that her role was just a cameo and right now it's shown on a long break due to viewers' disconnect with her role's negative development.[38]

In May 2022, singer Mika Singh made a special appearance as Anuj's friend in Anupamaa and Anuj's Mehendi and Sangeet ceremony and to promote his upcoming show Mika Di Vohti.[39] In the same month, Aneri Vajani announced her decision to participate in Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 12 and confirmed permanently quitting the series for the same with "no scope of coming back as it's all over for her role".[40][41]

Later in the same month, Rohit Bakshi[42] and Ashlesha Sawant[43] were cast to play Ankush Kapadia and Barkha Kapadia respectively while Alma Hussein[44] and Adhik Mehta[45] were cast to play Sara Kapadia and Adhik Kapadia opposite Kalnawat and Bamne respectively. Child artist Asmi Deo was also cast as an orphan Anu but her track was put on hold.[46]

Filming

Set in Gujarat, the series is mainly shot at Film City in Mumbai.[47][48] Some initial sequences were shot in Ahmedabad during early March 2020.[49]

On 13 February 2021, the filming was halted for a day for sanitisation when Paras Kalnawat playing Samar, tested positive for COVID-19 virus.[50] The sequences of Kalnawat with Anagha Bhosale playing Nandini were cancelled including proposal sequence of their characters and were replanned until his recovery and return in late February 2021. However he shot some sequences from his home under his and his mother's quarantine period.[51][52]

On 2 April 2021, Rupali Ganguly, Sudhanshu Pandey and Aashish Mehrotra who portray Anupamaa, Vanraj and Paritosh respectively and producer Rajan Shahi tested positive for COVID-19. Certain sequences were postponed and the story focused more on the characters Rakhi, Kavya and Leela while Ganguly, Pandey and Mehrotra shot for few sequences from their homes.[53][54] A few days later, Tassnim Sheikh, Alpana Buch and Nidhi Shah also tested positive for COVID-19 and the story focussed more on Samar, Nandini and Pakhi's characters.[55]

On 13 April 2021, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray announced a sudden curfew due to increased Covid cases in Maharashtra, while the production halted from 14 April 2021.[56] Hence, the production location was soon shifted temporarily to Silvassa alongside other shows like Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, Mann Kee Awaaz Pratigya 2 and Aai Kuthe Kay Karte of the production house.[57] In June 2021, the Maharashtra government permitted shooting within the state with certain restrictions, following which the whole cast and crew returned to Mumbai on 8 June 2021 and resumed shooting the following day.[58]

Prequel series

A prequel Anupama: Namaste America released on Disney+Hotstar on 25 April 2022. The story is set after 10 years of Anupamaa and Vanraj's marriage in the year 2005.[59][60][61]

Reception

Critics

The India Today stated, "Rupali Ganguly fits the character perfectly and aces the role of a Gujarati homemaker. The show strikes a chord with the homemakers as they can identify with the protagonist. Anupamaa has the right amount of emotions, drama, and spice. The show has the right mix of family values and a modern outlook. The show is a heartwarming tale".[62]

ThePrint appreciated the series along with few other Hindi GECs based on the story of a mother mentioning that it delivered moral lessons and calling the character Anupamaa as paragon of virtue and farcical.[63]

Ratings

India

Anupamaa had an average television rating point of 2.1 in the urban region during its debut week and became the seventh most watched Hindi GEC.[62] The series garnered its highest trp of 4.5 in Hindi GEC urban during Week 51 of 2021.[64][65]

Adaptations

Star Plus's Anupamaa is an official Hindi remake of Star Jalsha's Sreemoyee.[198] However its Marathi remake Aai Kuthe Kay Karte and Anupamaa both are produced by same producer Rajan Shahi under Director's Kut Productions and follows same plot.[199]
