Positive Action Scheme

Applications for our 2022 Positive Action Scheme are now closed!

Thinking of a career in journalism?

The Guardian believes there should be a better representation of our diverse society in the media, and each summer offers placements for two weeks for those aiming to start a career in journalism.

How it works

We offer placements to individuals from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds and people with disabilities considering a career in journalism.

Successful applicants will learn about different aspects of the profession - gaining an insight into the workings of a number of sections across the newspaper and website. You’ll also have an experienced journalist as a mentor to offer careers advice.

At the end of the two weeks, we offer each participant a chance to come back and spend one more week with the desk they felt was most useful and interesting for them.

Criteria

To be considered for a placement you must be at least 18, with the right to work or train in the UK and able to demonstrate a genuine interest in journalism – for example, serious involvement in student journalism, work experience on local/specialist media, or an impressive personal website or blog.

The aim of this London-based scheme is to introduce aspiring journalists to an editorial environment. For this reason we regret that professional journalists are not eligible to apply for these placements. Those who have received a previous placement at GNM are not eligible.

These placements are unpaid. For applicants who have no access to accommodation in London, the Sarah Hughes Trust has kindly offered to provide a small number of grants. If you'd like to be considered for one of these, please add a note at the end of your covering letter.

Note: if, by the summer, there are new pandemic-related restrictions on office working, it may be necessary to modify or postpone this year’s scheme.
