The Selective Reenlistment Bonus (SRB), sometimes called the Selective Retention Bonus, is a cash incentive paid to enlisted members to encourage reenlistments and retention in critical military skills.
Bonus award levels are adjusted as needed to ensure the services are retaining the correct quantity and critical skill mix to optimize their ability to accomplish the mission. The higher SRB amounts usually go to the more difficult positions to fill. You must also be at least an E-3 to get an SRB.
The current maximum SRB is $25,000 per year or reenlistment, making the maximum SRB payable $100,000 for a 4 year reenlistment. You may qualify for up to 2 SRBs in your military career for a maximum total of $200,000.
The bonus is usually paid in a lump sum of 50% paid at the time of reenlistment. The remaining bonus amount is paid in equal annual installments. It is taxable, however if you reeenlist in a tax-free combat zone or are a foreign national who reenlists OCONUS it is not taxable, and the installments are also tax-free.
