Phishing Scam?

Phishing Scam?

Hello all, I was wondering if anyone else here has been getting texts, calls or emails from what I suspect is likely a phishing scam.

Over the past five months, as I've received the same correspondence under three different aliases; the first is the same as the others, Richard Aldrich, but I've gotten identical messages from Paul Salvatore and Wyatt Mason. The body text always: "Hi this is (name), I'll like to know if I got the right contact to a graphic designer. Kindly let me know."

They identify the company as "Living Stone Furniture & Home" and from what I've gathered online from others, they either say they're looking for a web designer or that their website is currently under construction and that they are looking for someone to build their catalog.

It's often followed up with the following text:

"This company is really based on sales of furniture such as Kitchen Cabinet, Sofa, Office Chair, Accent tables, King bench bed etc.

  1. Company Name: LIVING STONE FURNITURE & HOME.

  2. MY WEBSITE IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION WHICH WOULD BE REGISTER VERY SOON.

  3. I DON'T HAVE LOGO BUT NEED A CUSTOMIZED LOGO FROM YOU.

  4. I COULD ONLY SUPPLY THE TEXT CONTENT AND PHOTO ALL ARE WITH THE PROJECT CONSULTANT YOU WILL JUST HANDLE THE LAYOUT.

  5. I WANT THE PAGE OF THE BROCHURE TO BE 24 PAGES (INCLUDING FRONT AND BACK COVER) BECAUSE I HAVE LOT INFORMATION. THE TEXT AND THE PICTURE IS APPROVED AND CROSSCHECK.

  6. THE SIZE OF BROCHURE SHOULD BE 8.5 X 11.5.

  7. I WILL WANT YOU TO ADD OUR CORE VALUES, MISSION & VISION( I'LL SEND THEM TO YOU)"

He then proceeds to insist you open an account through Intuit Quickbooks Pro in order to pay for services. The first correspondence I received was from "Richard" in August, and at the time he said he wanted this project completed by October or November. I received the second correspondence from "Paul" last month and the latest email from "Wyatt" today. I wanted to give you all a heads up.

TL;DR Living Stone Furniture & Home is a possible phishing scam targeting designers.

This is bonkers!! I went through this entire scenario just these past few days (I received the first message on Feb 19, 2019). I'm really pissed 'cause I needed that money but I'm glad my scam radar went off before it went any further.

Everything in this thread is IDENTICAL to what I experienced except that the company name was Great Elms, not Living Stone Furniture. I was almost upset that I didn't charge him more than what I originally quoted him after he told me the "consultant" charged him $3,500 just for photos.

He said he was in Delaware to handle some medical issues and that he was recently diagnosed with lung cancer. He basically had me up until he told me to create a new invoice for nearly $4,300, take out my fee, then send the rest to the "consultant." His message to me about the consultant and an issue with payment was:

"I got in touch with the consultant but I'm having a little issue with him concerning my agreement with him."

He went on to say:

"I'd signed the agreement to make cash or bank deposit to him for his payment but due to my present condition I was diagnosed with lunch cancer and will undergo a surgery soon so I'm limited and I won't be able to do that."

A little broken English but I got caught up in the lung cancer thing, which frankly disarmed me as I realized that I was actually feeling sorry for him.

As it were when he asked me to send him the money via Quickbooks invoice I was actually considering Quickbooks after dumping Freshbooks. I haven't had many clients lately and spending $25 just for invoicing was a lot (I plan to start using Zoho; Quickbooks invoices are way too simple and don't have basic features like a field for a deposit or discounts).

I then proceeded to tell him that if he paid me via credit card he'd be losing 2.5% of the fee, but his answer to that was to just add that percentage to the overall total.

After that I got suspicious so my initial reaction was to ask him to confirm his identity. We'd only conversed via text and email so I was hoping he could do something to confirm this wasn't a scam. But before I sent out the text I decided to look up his name and the word "scam" then boom, this Reddit page showed up and I was blown away by how accurate it was compared to my experience.

I was also thinking of just having him paying the invoice but then thought that if that money comes through and I use it my bank could come after me if I spent it then I'd be in even worse trouble.

Anyway, I was gonna send him this Reddit link but then decided to just ignore him. Well, I did say "I know. You can stop now." but then he texted back that he didn't understand but I'm sure he (or she disguised as Richard) will get the point.

I've received clients via text in the past so I had no reason not to trust this wasn't a solid lead.

Oh well. If anyone has $4,000 they'd like to send without a catch I'll gladly take it off your hands.

Good night!

Can Confirm that this scammer is now going by Great Elms and asking for the exact thing. Just got the text today and was weirded out because my personal number is not located on any of my sites.

I was still onboard though right up until he said he had a mission statement, target audience, colors and brand info. No client in the universe has all of those ready and then contacts a designer. Doesn’t happen.

So I’m still in the process of talking with them and I shall do my absolute best to screw with them until the tap out.

Anything sent in all caps is always a scam.

The "all caps" didn't happen until around the third or fourth email, FYI.

It is definitely a scam targeting designers. I received the exact same email and correspondence. Said his budget was $3000, signed a contract, but then got super fishy about the payment. In the end, gives a huge sob story about health issues and how his consultant won't release the photos. Tried to get me to help him transfer funds to his consultant, and when I said no I never heard back from him.

I'm glad I posted this. A lot of people have been finding it through a simple search, so I feel like I'm saving people a lot of headaches.

Speaking with another graphic designer friend of mine, who was familiar with this scam, mentioned that these scammers have the ability to make the payment look legit long enough for you to withdraw the money and send it to him. By the time the bank finds out your account is now overdrawn by whatever amount he deposited.

I'm now warning every graphic designer I know to be on the lookout for this.

I actually just got a text this morning (2:30 a.m.) from "Richard" from Living Stone Furniture Company - same exact wording, but didn't get into the payment part because I was going to work up a quote. He asked for a 32 page full color catalog, and wanted a logo. I sent this link to him because of my concerns after I did the research on the company. This upsets me because I thought this would be a good job, and I was really looking forward to the job. Unfortunately, because of this info, I told him I had to pass on the job. Oh, and he said he got my name from the Better Business Bureau, which I actually cancelled 4 months ago (monthly fees are expensive!!!). All graphic designers, PLEASE be aware!!

Contacted last week by Shah Uptal, [email protected]**, of Great Elms.** Sent me two emails with all the company information already gathered and colors selected (again, who has that information but needs a logo still?). What a weird scam.

I've been a repeat recipient of this scam. Add a new alias to the pile: "Conti Lamar" [email protected]

Thanks for all the info everyone! I thought the email was suspicious and got the company name which led me here. Saved me some serious headaches! Adding another contact to the list... It's still going strong. [email protected]

Heh russell Cobb texted me too. The only problem is I got as far as another user from a previous comment where he sent the payment through Quickbooks. I called my bank to let them know what was going on and the transaction of 5000.00 will be immediately reversed.

Just got Russell Cobb myself with all of the same information. Thanks for the warning!

I just got my first correspondence from "Maybe: Jackson". LOL. Thanks for the confirmation. I'll just go ahead and block that number.

Just received the same scam by “Willson Berry” at +1 (530) 481-5609. Odd to target designers when for the most part, we are pretty computer literate and are the last people to be sending money in order to get more money. Stay safe out there folks.

Glad I googled his "company" and found this thread.

My email was from Robert Pual at [email protected].
