How can I apply for unemployment insurance?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not administer or oversee unemployment insurance (UI) programs. You should contact your State workforce agency for information, using the Department of Labor's Career Onestop Service Locator.

April jobless rates down in 13 states; payroll jobs up in 11 states

In April, unemployment rates were lower in 13 states and the District of Columbia and stable in 37 states. Nonfarm payroll employment increased in 11 states and was essentially unchanged in 39 states and the District.

Jobless rates were lower in March than a year earlier in 386 of the 389 metropolitan areas and higher in 3. Nonfarm payroll employment increased over the year in 147 metropolitan areas and was essentially unchanged in 242.

Annual average unemployment rates decreased in 49 states and the District of Columbia in 2021, while the rate was little changed in 1 state. Employment-population ratios increased in 38 states and the District, decreased in 1 state, and were little changed in 11 states.
