(05/16/22) CTE Administrative Officer (Health Science Specialist GS-11) - Boston, MA



This position is located within the Research & Development Service Line at VA Boston Healthcare System that conducts health services research projects and performs basic science research. The Health Science Specialist (HSS) functions as a member of a large multidisciplinary research and operations enterprise whose responsibilities are both local and national in scope. National research projects and operational evaluations also relate to VA planning and management. The HSS employs scientific, organizational, interpersonal skills, and an understanding of the basic principles of scientific investigation and in-depth understanding of the study protocols in order to make difficult decisions independently.

Major Duties and Responsibilities: The incumbent serves as an HSS, partnering with senior level personnel at a VISN1 Research Service to create and maintain a comprehensive, coordinated overview of the VA Medical Center's participation in the Research Service programs. The incumbent is directly responsible for executing highly complex, multi-phased tasks which are required for the successful day-today conduct of the research support activities in this program. The incumbent will provide high level assistance to the Principal Investigators and their support personnel in coordinating participant recruitment; ensuring interview programs are ethically sound and meet all regulatory requirements; develop robust data collection systems and methodologies; and cover all administrative aspects of the studies. The incumbent will also pursue individual funding opportunities when appropriate and organize program evaluations for the department. (05/12/22) Psychology Research Assistant - Boston, MA



Job Description: The  National Center for PTSD, Women’s Health Sciences Division at VA Boston HealthCare System is seeking up to four full-time Research Assistants for an early summer (June/July) start date. The research assistant(s) will work closely with Principal Investigators and Division staff on research projects related to Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), PTSD treatment and treatment outcome clinical trials, gender differences in traumatic stress exposure and comorbidity with self-destructive behaviors (e.g., self-directed violence, disordered eating, substance use), and health outcomes and stressors unique to women Veterans. Primary responsibilities include conducting telephone and in-person screening sessions, data collection, data analysis, participant recruitment and screening, administrative management of research studies, and assistance in the preparation of grants, presentations, and manuscripts. 

Setting: The Women's Health Sciences Division in Boston, MA, specializes in the study of women Veterans and non-Veterans, with a particular focus on understanding gender differences in trauma exposure, trauma and stress in marginalized groups, community violence, and polytrauma psychopathology.

Requirements: Bachelor's degree in psychology or a closely related discipline; research experience. Interest in/experience working with individuals at risk of self-directed violence desired for one of the research technician positions.

(05/12/22) Research Librarian (Systematic Reviews) - Portland, OR or remote



This position is housed in the Research and Development Service located at the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Portland Health Care System in Portland, Oregon. The incumbent will serve as a Research Librarian (Health Science Specialist) in the Coordinating Center for the Evidence Synthesis Program (ESP), a national VA Health Services Research and Development Service (HSR&D;) research program.

Since 2007, the ESP has focused on improving Veteran health and wellbeing through the production of tailored evidence synthesis products to support the implementation of effective practices. ESP’s high-quality, timely, and innovative syntheses have resulted in positive changes to clinical practice and policy and have informed quality improvement and research-focused initiatives at the national level. The program comprises 4 ESP Centers across the US and a Coordinating Center (CC) located in Portland, Oregon. Center Directors are VA clinicians and recognized leaders in the field of evidence synthesis with close ties to the AHRQ Evidence-based Practice Center Program. The CC manages national program operations, conducts initial scoping and feasibility assessment of systematic review topics nominated to the ESP, and houses the Rapid Response program, which responds to urgent evidence needs through the production of rapid evidence synthesis products (eg, ESP Evidence Briefs).

POSITION DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

As a Research Librarian with the ESP, the incumbent’s primary responsibility is to develop and conduct scientific literature searches on a variety of health services and clinical topics in collaboration with evidence synthesis researchers and subject matter experts. Specific duties for this position include:

  • Developing, documenting, and executing search strategies to facilitate 1) initial scoping of proposed systematic review topics, 2) production of systematic reviews assigned to ESP Centers, and 3) production of Rapid Response evidence synthesis products at the ESP CC. Specific tasks include, but are not limited to: translating topic analytic models and eligibility criteria to systematic search strategies, adapting strategies to multiple databases, conducting gray literature searches, comprehensively documenting search strings (terms, filters, limits, etc) and results, and accurately populating Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) diagrams.
  • Assisting with reference management using EndNote and systematic review screening software. Specific tasks include, but are not limited to: creating EndNote and systematic review screening software libraries populated with search results, carrying out full-text retrieval, ensuring accuracy of library contents, and supporting citation management during Rapid Response evidence synthesis product development.
  • Providing bibliometrics for program progress reports.
  • Engaging in relevant training and professional development. Specific activities include, but are not limited to: maintaining awareness of current systematic review trends and tools, attending training webinars and tutorials when possible on methods and software for performing systematic reviews, and providing team training (as required).

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in library and information science, or related field
  • Experience developing and conducting complex search strategies for systematic reviews, including using health-related databases (eg, PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, CINAHL, etc); using controlled and keyword vocabulary, MeSH terms, and Boolean and proximity operators; and searching gray literature
  • Skill in using reference management software other than EndNote (eg, Zotero).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2+ years of experience as an academic or medical librarian conducting research and systematic reviews on health-related topics
  • Familiarly with best practices in documenting and reporting literature searches, including the PRISMA standards for reporting systematic reviews and meta-analyses
  • Skill in using EndNote, or other citation management software
  • Proficiency in systematic review screening software (eg, PICO Portal, DistillerSR, Covidence, or EPPI-Reviewer)

The Seattle Network oDedicated Enrollment Sites (NODES) is recruiting a full-time position that will provide research coordination for multi-site clinical trials at VA Puget Sound. The Senior Research Study Coordinator will work closely with the Seattle NODES Research Program Manager, Center Directors and CSP study teams to assure the success of their studies. This position is based in Seattle, WA. The Seattle NODES is 1 of 23 NODES within CSP.

Key Duties:

  • Under the direction of the NODES Research Program Manager, participates in all aspects of conducting clinical research which includes but is not limited to: feasibility assessments, screening/recruiting potential study participants, obtaining informed consent, enrollment, randomization, scheduling research appointments, data collection, study procedures, study surveys, collection/processing of biospecimens, reporting study adverse events/side effects and completing appropriate study documentation for multiple research studies in-person or over the telephone.  
  • Prepares study materials including, but not limited to, regulatory paperwork, informed consent document, case report forms (CRFs), enrollment logs, participant reimbursement, and drug/device accountability logs.

This position will be supervised by the Chief of Cardiology at VA Boston. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Cooperative Studies Program (CSP) is a nationally renowned program that produces innovative solutions to Veteran and national healthcare problems through multi-site research studies.

The VA CSP Seattle Epidemiologic Research and Information Center (ERIC), is hiring a full-time Research Data Analyst to work with an experienced and growing group of researchers committed to high-quality epidemiologic investigations using large, complex health data to address Veteran health issues.

The Research Data Analyst will support several large, national, epidemiologic research studies as well as smaller-scale, investigator-initiated projects. This position will work closely with the Center’s senior data manager, biostatisticians, and scientific personnel in the conduct of observational epidemiologic studies addressing environmental and occupational exposures, pharmacotherapy, specific medical conditions, and genetics/genomics. Some of the current research projects at the ERIC include pulmonary health, cardiovascular disease, mental health, back pain, dysvascular amputations, and COVID-19 associated outcomes.

Primary responsibilities include identifying appropriate data elements from VA data sources, extracting and cleaning data, creating and curating research repository databases, and creating analytic data sets to be used to answer specific research and operational questions. Additional responsibilities may include mentoring staff, consulting with investigators about available VA data resources, and keeping abreast of new technologies needed to support the CSP’s future scientific and data needs.

Key duties:

  • Collaborate with investigators and staff to identify key data elements from national and local VA data sources and create analytic files for staff epidemiologists and biostatisticians
  • Create data specifications, design complex data extract systems, and write supporting documentation
  • Design, create, and load relational databases, tables, and files to meet the needs of study staff and support ongoing national projects
  • Curate large genomic datasets and extract study data from these as required
  • Manage, administer, and ensure data quality, security, and maintenance of data files and database systems from current and past epidemiologic studies
  • Validate study data from field sites and troubleshoot any issues uncovered by staff
  • Respond quickly and accurately to urgent data requests from Investigators  

Qualifications:

  • Master’s-level degree in a scientific field
  • Professional experience working with relational databases
  • Experience with healthcare data desired
  • Proficiency in SQL
  • Experience with a statistical programming language such as R, SAS or Stata.
  • Excellent data management, programming, and communication skills
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and the ability to work both independently and in a team setting
  • Familiarity with VA data systems, files, and data security and working knowledge of Power BI, Visual Basic Studio, Python, and/or C# preferred

The Brain Rehabilitation Research Center (BRRC) at the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center (MRVAMC) in Gainesville, FL is seeking a new Center Director. This position is located in the Boston VA Medical Center, Veterans Health Administration (VHA), and is based in Boston, MA. The Million Veteran Program (MVP) is a VHA Office of Research & Development (ORD) supported national health and genetic investigation program that is coordinated nationally. Key duties:

Working with research staff to support day-to-day operational and study activities for the Center, including:

  4. Developing study materials and standard operating procedures

Projects: Liver-related and COVID-related observational research using national Veterans Affairs (VA) data

Description: We have an established team of investigators, biostatisticians, analysts and data managers working on a number of VA-funded projects conducting observational research on liver-related and COVID-related outcomes. We have multiple collaborators locally in the Puget Sound VA and the University of Washington and around the country. We are looking for an analyst to help us create analytic variables using national VA electronic data and also to perform some of the initial analyses and interpretation. Everybody on our team works in a collaborative manner and can be involved also in aspects of study design and in co-authorship of scientific manuscripts.

The Analyst will be Masters or PhD level person ideally with existing analytic skills in processing electronic health records, creating analytical variables and executing some analyses under the direction of the study’s senior biostatisticians, other analysts and co-investigators. The Analyst will be expected to have some background and training in either biostatistics or epidemiology or very closely related field. Applicants with a Bachelor degree will also be considered if they can demonstrate that they have the necessary practical experience. The Analyst will work closely with an outstanding team of senior VA investigators to develop appropriate analytic datasets and execute methods for observational studies of COVID-19 outcomes. Applicants who have experience in clinical-epidemiological research will be preferred.

Tasks for the analyst would include some of the following, depending on their skillset:

  • Accessing the VA’s electronic health records in the Corporate Data Warehouse (CDW) in SQL to obtain original data for the project
  • “Cleaning” CDW data as needed (e.g. for laboratory tests)
  • Creating analytic variables using CDW data
  • Presenting preliminary summary statistics of the analytic variables in Tables
  • Executing some of the preliminary analyses, under the direction of the investigators, such as initial regression analyses and presenting the results in Tables
  • Communicating with other study analysis and study investigators to relay results and optimize analytic plans

This full-time position is with a national program responsible for the technical development and maintenance of a database and website that support reporting of research and compliance-related processes for HSR&D.;

Under the direction of the Program Director, the Research Specialist will:

  • Manage and support technical development for the Program
  • Administer all aspects of a large SQL relational database; help build the structure and design of the database including managing large tables, maintaining schemas, writing stored procedures, and developing queries and utilities; manage automated SQL Server job development, scheduling and monitoring
  • Design and implement software applications and database specifications (often in a team setting) or modify existing applications to meet specific Research Service needs
  • Coordinate the implementation of new web-based user applications including testing and debugging
  • Oversee technical maintenance of systems and servers; troubleshoot technical problems; manage permissions and security measures
  • Provide assistance and technical advice to individuals and groups; respond in a timely manner to reported problems and alerts
  • Write and edit comprehensive, technical documentation
  • Conduct special projects at the request of Program Director

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree (science degree required); Advanced degree preferred
  • Experience working in a research environment; familiarity with research processes
  • 3-5 years of programming experience; including writing complex operations, queries, and scripts
  • Expert-level knowledge in Microsoft SQL Server database administration, and related products; including database design and documentation; also data backup, recovery, security, integrity; experience with MS Access preferred
  • Working knowledge and skill in advanced Web programming techniques and languages, including HTML, JavaScript, ColdFusion, JAVA, XML, OLAP, Adobe Dreamweaver development tools; and browsers including MS Edge, MS Internet Explorer and Chrome.
  • Solid testing experience
  • Analytical mindset and good problem-solving skills; highly organized
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • U.S. citizenship is required
  • COVID-19 vaccination required for Federal employees
