Tweeting about tornadoes in the United States. | Tornado watch/warning list: bit.ly/1qxfOGv
So far in 2022, there has only been one confirmed #tornado in Middle Tennessee - an EF1 in southern Giles County on January 1. This is the lowest number of #tornadoes by this date since 2005. Note that just last year in 2021 we had the most tornadoes on record with 46 total 🌪️

On August 23rd 2010 a strong low over the north sea brought a significant 850 mbar jet steak to central/northwestern Europe. The result was an outbreak of #tornadoes including a F3 wedge #tornado in the german state of Hesse that tracked perilously close to highway A5. #OTDwx

12Z obsrved sounding for Meiningen in thuringia. This is very close spatially but not temporally. ERA5 reanalyis did not correctly estimate this environment, so I used this instead. There is impressive low-level hodograph curvautre as you can see. >200 m2s2 of 0-1 km SRH is no joke, not surprised this produced a F3 wedge.

#OTDwx in 2008 an extraordinary severe #weather outbreak featuring hurricane-force straight line #wind gusts, giant #hail up to 8.75 cm (3.44 inch) in diameter and three F3 #tornadoes, all spawned by the same intense supercell, including a deadly long-tracked F3T7 wedge. #EUwx

ERA5 sounding for the start location of the first tornado from tbe afforementioned long-tracked intense supercell. Sounding features a high-end european all hazards severe weather environment. Favourable shear to CAPE ratioes and wind profiles for supercells, high DCAPE, >50 m2s2 BRN shear and very favourable critical angle. SRH could be higher in terms of tornadoes but that is offset by the very favourable critical angle and this way the environment also became more favourable for giant hail.
