JOB PURPOSE: 

The Amnesty Tech Programme Director provides leadership and vision for Amnesty International's work on technology and human rights, ensuring the organisation remains a global leader in the field and promoting the use of technology-enabled solutions that advance the protection of human rights. The role will manage globally distributed teams with interdisciplinary functions spanning technical investigations, legal, policy, advocacy and strategy development, and multi-country campaigns.

 

ABOUT YOU: 

An inspiring leader with substantial experience in the field of technology and human rights, as well as managing remote, interdisciplinary teams. You will have significant expert knowledge of technology and its intersection with the promotion and protection of human rights, including relevant international law and standards. You will have substantial experience in managing global research, policy development, campaigning and advocacy on technology and human rights issues, with a strong track record of developing strategies to address human rights violations and abuses which are transnational. You will have the ability to lead, inspire, motivate and facilitate their own and other teams to collaborate/support one another to deliver integrated and co-ordinated strategic interventions.

Finally, you will have a demonstrated and strong commitment to ensuring effective management and professional development of the staff in the Programme, including a team environment that is based on wellbeing, respect, equity, inclusion, diversity, active anti-racism and openness to constructive feedback.  

 

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES (please refer to the JD for full list):

  • Provide overall leadership over the delivery of Amnesty Tech's strategy and plans, including on artificial intelligence and human rights, algorithmic discrimination in the public sector, unlawful targeted surveillance and other forms of digital repression, children's and young people's digital rights, strategic litigation and other emerging issues, ensuring effective delivery of priority projects;
  • Oversee the implementation of Amnesty Tech's operational plan in line with Amnesty International's Global Strategic Framework, within the wider movement and deliver consistent leadership and support on technology and human rights issues;
  • Ensure the effective leadership and management of staff within Amnesty Tech, including motivating and facilitating staff to develop their professional skills and to develop their ability to think creatively and innovatively about the delivery of their work, appropriate allocation of resources, a commitment to anti-racism, intersectionality, equity and inclusion across all functions, adherence to human resource standards and compliance with Staff Terms and Conditions of Employment and related policies and procedures;
  • Lead the development of, and secure financial and expert human resources, for new initiatives and projects that advance the work of Amnesty Tech where necessary and ensure Amnesty International's global leadership on technology and human rights.
  • Oversee the effective management of Amnesty Tech's budget (unrestricted and restricted income), including forecasting, tracking budget expenditure, reporting on spend and other relevant budget management tasks. 

 

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE (please refer to JD for full list): 

  • Significant expert knowledge – demonstrated through academic qualifications and substantial professional experience – of technology and its intersection with the promotion and protection of human rights, including relevant international law and standards.
  • Demonstrated leadership in the global human rights movement through communication of a vision of the opportunities and threats facing the human rights movement with regard to the new and frontier technologies.
  • Demonstrated vision and creativity, as well as intellectual discipline to lead the human rights movement in developing human rights strategies on highly contested issues that are effective and compelling.
  • Committed to ensuring effective management and professional development of the staff in the Programme, including a team environment that is based on wellbeing, respect, equity, inclusion, diversity, active anti-racism and openness to constructive feedback.
