Fellowship in Psychosis, Suicide, and Major Mental Illness
Our mission is to pursue a discovery-to-recovery approach for serious mental illness in veterans by determining causes, identifying predictors, and developing treatments that overcome barriers and enable recovery.
We have partnered with the Department of Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai to create two postdoctoral fellowships to study and treat mental illness in veterans—a psychiatry fellowship, and a psychology fellowship. The 2-year, interdisciplinary fellowships train psychiatrists and psychologists to become leading recovery-oriented researchers and care providers with a focus on serious mental illness and suicidality in veterans.
The primary appointment is at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx, and the secondary appointment is at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in Manhattan. The MIRECC is chaired by René Kahn, MD, PhD, and its research programs are internationally recognized in a broad range of areas including cognitive neuroscience, electrophysiology, neuropsychology, cognitive behavioral therapy for psychosis, dialectical behavior therapy, clinical psychopharmacology, health services, and implementation science.
Individualized, mentored research and clinical training is combined with a state-of-the-art curriculum that emphasizes research methods, statistics, epidemiology, mental health systems, quality improvement methods, education, and service delivery. In collaboration with their mentors, fellows will develop and implement a research project, publish and present findings, participate in grant writing, and utilize the latest technology for educational activities and clinical service delivery. The mentorship team includes MIRECC faculty members, as well as other faculty from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Psychiatry Fellowship
Applicants must have completed ACGME-accredited residency training, be board-eligible or board-certified, and have an active, unrestricted U.S. license to practice medicine. International medical graduates must also have a current visa and an ECFMG certificate that is valid indefinitely. Applicants on a J-1 visa must have current ECFMG sponsorship as well.
Start date: Flexible.

Psychology Fellowship
Overview: The Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center (MIRECC) of the New York/New Jersey Veterans Healthcare Network is accepting applications from psychologists for a 2-year Post-Doctoral Advanced Fellowship Program in Mental Health Research and Treatment. The Fellowship program is APA accredited* and aims to train psychologists to become leading clinical recovery-oriented physician-scientists with a focus on serious mental illness in veterans. Our mission is to pursue a discovery-to-recovery approach for serious mental illness by determining causes, identifying predictors, and developing treatments that overcome barriers and enable recovery.
Program Description: The fellow’s primary appointment will be at the JJPVA Medical Center in the Bronx, NY, and the Fellow will also receive an appointment at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, NY. The opportunities for training will reside in the research, clinical, and educational programs at the JJPVA of the MIRECC and the affiliate Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, typically within the Department of Psychiatry.
The MIRECC research programs are internationally recognized in a broad range of research areas including cognitive neuroscience; neuropsychology; evidence-based psychosocial interventions (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Psychosis, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Suicide Prevention); and implementation science. VA Fellowship sites are linked electronically for didactic, academic, and research efforts. The Director and the MIRECC faculty have a strong commitment to translational research that links basic science to clinical research and clinical research to services research. Our interdisciplinary program aims to train psychologists to become outstanding clinical researchers in high priority areas of mental health. Fellows devote the majority of their time to patient oriented research, education activities, and direct patient clinical care. Individualized, mentored research and clinical training is combined with a state-of-the-art curriculum that emphasizes research methods, statistics, epidemiology, mental health systems, quality improvement methods, education, and service delivery. In collaboration with their mentors, Fellows will develop and implement a research project, publish and present findings, participate in grant writing, and utilize the latest technology for educational activities and clinical service delivery.
Start Day: The start day is flexible. The fellowship will begin between July 1st and October 1st, 2022.
COVID-19: As we continue to monitor and adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bronx VA has implemented a number of policies and procedures to ensure the safety and well-being of all patients, staff, and trainees. We have adopted measures to allow training activities to be conducted remotely, when possible, and will continue to collaborate with our fellows so that they can safely meet their training needs and professional goals throughout their fellowship. Stipend and Benefits: Salary and benefits are competitive. Our fellowship is an equal opportunity training program.
Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S. citizens, hold a doctorate from an APA accredited program in clinical or counseling psychology, and be enrolled in or have completed an APA accredited internship in clinical or counseling psychology. Doctoral requirements, including dissertation, must be completed before the start of fellowship.

VA National Center on Homelessness among Veterans (NCHAV) & VISN 2 Post-Doctoral Fellowship
The VA National Center on Homelessness among Veterans (NCHAV), in collaboration with the VA Office of Academic Affiliations (OAA), has created a postdoctoral fellowship program for those interested in addressing Veteran homelessness. The NCHAV Fellowship is open to clinicians or non-clinicians with a doctoral degree or who have completed all requirements toward a doctoral degree from an accredited institution.
Fellows will have a formal connection with NCHAV and will be expected to work with a NCHAV mentor along with a local mentor out of VA VISN 2. NCHAV Fellows will have opportunities to work with national operational partners and be on the cutting-edge of the latest research, policy and educational developments in Veteran homelessness, with opportunities to interact and collaborate on projects, including funded travel to meet in-person at the annual American Public Health Association Conference.
One opportunity will be working with the VA VISN 2 Center of Excellence on projects related to preventing homelessness among Veterans by providing certified sponsors to Veterans. The first project evaluates a sponsorship program for criminally-involved Veterans and works closely with county and local courts, as well as resources provided by the VA’s Veteran Justice Outreach program. The second project is an innovative sponsorship program that starts working with active-duty Servicemembers transitioning out of the military on military installations and then attempts to facilitate a successfully reintegration for them into their new hometowns.
