intro[edit]

Accessibility: This page probably isn't very accessible. I've not been very careful about that here because it's mostly notes to myself. But i welcome feedback on my talk page, in case there are things i haven't noticed, so i know not to do those things on Wikipedia article pages.

Hi![edit]

  • I'm very interested in languages, but English is the only language I am fluent in. I can understand a fair bit of German, but I am not articulate in German. I can read bits and pieces of several other languages, and i'm trying to learn a few more. 🐟
  • I read dozens of different Wikipedia sites in different languages, I love exploring. I want to help the smaller dialect and minority language Wikipedias grow and thrive, please let me know what I can do that is useful, and what I should avoid? I'm certainly not qualified to write the text, but possibly i can be useful working on things like figures and tables? wikipedia logo

Accessibility [edit]

My favourite parts of Wikipedia are the tables. These are what i find easiest to understand, due to my own combination of strengths and struggles, and i expect i am not alone in this. But i know tables can cause accessibility problems for some readers, so i'm keen to help optimise them.

Linguistics & Languages [edit]

Writing systems [edit]

I'm fascinated phonetic writing systems. I don't know if this is fitting or ironic given I always hated spelling as a kid. It still feels like English uses vowels and double letters at random. I know it's not true mathematical randomness; there's a history behind it. So, "chaotic" is the more exact term for why i cannot predict what i need to do to make the angry red squiggle under the word go away.) I like that Arabic expresses all of the hard bits from English spelling as optional diacritics. If they'd tried to teach me Australian English symaltaniously simultaneously in Arabic, Devanagari, and Latin scripts, i think i might have learnt more of English.

Ideas[edit]

(discussed, is should find link) We should add Glottolog references (if applicable) anywhere Ethnologue references appear.

  • Glottolog of freely accessible so readers and editors and check it for themselves (for comparison, Ethnologue subscription costs more than: Microsoft Office 360, plus Netflix, plus Audible, plus, plus Amazon prime, combined)
  • Glottolog allegedly more thoroughly referenced.
  • SIL is a Christian org so there could be some bias or culturally inappropriate perspective, especially given how many languages have religious significance.

Genetics & Evolution[edit]

Gender in genetics articles[edit]

Most instances of "men" or "women" in genetics articles are inaccurate, e.g. not all XY people are "men", but expanding each instance to "men, women, girls, boys, and non-binary people" or "mostly men but with some exceptions" makes the articles unreadable, just say "people" then give links to appropriate pages that readers can click for more details.

Rough guide to simplest options of phrasing =

  • XY or one X chromosome = "people", "mostly men", "such as most men", or "including most female mammals".
  • XX or two X chromosomes = "people", "mostly women", "such as most women", or "including most female mammals".
  • any other combination where we can link a medical article = "people" + link for details.

And where gender might be relevant make sure you add "most" or "usually", avoid biased terms like "normal", or over complicated terms that don't relate to the article like "typical karyotype".

  • English Native speaker with wide a weird mix of strengths and weaknesses in written communication.
  • I use too many long words AND too much slang. I'm working on doing that less.
  • I can't spell, but i think this is just because English spelling is very inconsistent. I like that Arabic and Urdu use optional diacritics to show double letters and most vowels, those are the hardest bits to spell in English.
  • I often do non-standard things, like lowercase "i" for the pronoun, but usually it's deliberate. I'll use capital "i" in the middle of a sentence when more fonts make it not look like baby "L".

I can understand simple stuff, but i often need to look things up. I can get the gist if there are pictures or tables. My understanding is a lot better than my speaking or writing.

I can't communicate even moderately complex ideas in any language other than English. I'm working on it, but i often end up on obsessive tangents.

In my only trip overseas i discovered i can only understand Swiss Germans if i first speak to them in broken standard German in an Australian accent.

I'm trying to learn standard Arabic and Egyptian Arabic, but i've not got far yet.

Trying to spell in Arabic is helping me understand English spelling, i wish they'd taught me Arabic and Devanagari at school instead of just giving me lists of English words to memorize.

I really wish i'd not let the dialects issue scare me off as long as it did. It's like not learning Spanish because French and Italian also exist. And i learned standard German despite there being diverse dialects of German.

drafts and notes[edit]

dear other editors: these are very rough scratchy drafts[edit]

I know these are dreadful¡

Feedback welcome on technical aspects, like templates and wiki markup, but not content.

I just needed somewhere to store them that I'd not forget about them. I know the sandbox exists, but i prefer having them here.

رسم[edit]

It is thought that early writing systems so tried just as an adjunct to memorization, rather than as a way to store information. (c ite history of writing) this included many writing ssystems in many culturees, not just recitation of thee quran. actually it's in thhe history of egypt long course but now, the quran is one of the few places thaat arabic uses all of the arabicc diacriticss, not just thee ijam, but also {{lang|ar| ــّـ }} shaaddaa, {{lang|ar|}} ssakkun, and all off the (arabic namee) short vvowels. recetation is stil a key part of isslam. Islam has spread to become aa global rrligion, mosst mulssims do not speak arabic aas their native language, they speak (rougghly in order from westo eaast) english, turkish, persian, punjabi, urdu, hindi, begala, bhaasa indonesia, malay, and many other languages also add zero width joiner to allah
