3-nen E-gumi Utatan (Japanese: 3年E組うた担, Hepburn: Sannen E-gumi Utatan, lit. "Class 3-E Song Representatives") were a Japanese pop music group created in 2015 for the anime adaptation of the Assassination Classroom manga. The group, formed of five voice actors from the Assassination Classroom anime, released four singles from 2015 to 2016, and performed live three times.

History[edit]

2015: Creation and first releases[edit]

3-nen E-gumi Utatan was first announced in the second 2015 issue of the Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine, where it was unveiled that five characters from Assassination ClassroomNagisa Shiota (Mai Fuchigami), Karma Akabane (Nobuhiko Okamoto), Kaede Kayano (Aya Suzaki), Yūma Isogai (Ryota Osaka), and Hiroto Maehara (Shintaro Asanuma) – would be performing "Seishun Satsubatsuron", the first opening to the franchise's anime series. A single release for the opening was also announced, and released later on February 18.[1][2]

In May 2015, it was announced that 3-nen E-gumi Utatan would also perform the second opening theme to Assassination Classroom, "Jiriki Hongan Revolution", set to debut in the series' 18th episode, "Action Time". The second opening was released as a single on May 27, and was performed live by the group at the Shibuya Public Hall to promote the release of the first season of Assassination Classroom on Blu-ray.[3][4]

2015–16: Second Assassination Classroom season[edit]

In August 2015, 3-nen E-gumi Utatan previewed their next song, "Question", at the Animelo Summer Live 2015 music festival.[5] In December, it was announced that the song would also be used the next opening to the Assassination Classroom series, and was set to debut in January.[6] Around the same time as the debut of "Question", the group also recorded the song "E-Gumi Nuru Nuru Ondo" for the video game Assassination Classroom: Assassin Training Plan.[7] "Question" was released as a CD single on February 24. The CD also featured "E-Gumi Nuru Nuru Ondo" as an additional track.[8]

In April 2015, 3-nen E-gumi Utatan performed the fourth opening theme, "Bye Bye Yesterday", in collaboration with the Japanese rock band Frederic, who wrote the song's lyrics.[9][10] "Bye Bye Yesterday" was released as a CD single on May 25, which also contained three other songs.[11]

In July, the group performed "Question" and "Bye Bye Yesterday" live at the Pacifico Yokohama convention center, as a part of a celebration for the ending of the Assassination Classroom TV-series.[12]
