I'm absolutely thrilled to announce this picture has won World Press Photo of the Year—which is a hell of a title isn't it? Before I catch up to the incredible and deeply appreciated outpouring, I wanted to share some thoughts from Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc chief

I'm keenly aware this photograph could not exist without the hard work of the community to heal, to search, to recount their stories, to honour their missing children. The traumas of Residential Schools are not mine, but their legacy is a shared history that calls us to action.

"That grave photograph captured the dark reality that THEY WERE CHILDREN. Congrats to the photographer for capturing and sharing this picture of the grave reality with world."

"That memorial gave life to the children's unsettled spirits that need proper ceremony and burial. The picture captured the essence of our true collective history. Symbolizing the children who did not come home. Brought awareness to the genocide that survivors of IRS spoke of."

"My thoughts and prayers to those who erected the crosses with little children’s clothing after the announcement of 215 unmarked graves. I honor [Willow George and Cee-Cee Camille] for bringing awareness to the public that they were CHILDREN and we mourn, grieve, and honor them"

I had the incredible honour of documenting in Rome, supporting 's work, as chief Casimir joined a delegation of survivors and representatives to again recount the wounds of Residential Schools at the Vatican. I was able to share this good news and here's her response

Don’t look away! I’m thinking of Marieval Residential School survivor Barry Kennedy whom I met with at the former school grounds last fall. He showed me the area where he was forced to dig a grave for his classmate. 💔💔💔

I've been following this story for years now for , and every year the numbers go one direction: ⬆️⬆️⬆️ And... shows 99% of the time the gov never recoups its money from delinquent oil and gas companies. 📷

Hearing from survivors here they’re getting attacked on social media for meeting with the Pope. Some have stopped posting their photos online because they’re being bombarded with negativity. This is so sad. Already tons of trauma for them. Don’t take anger out on them.

April is my sad month. On April 30 it will be 8 yrs since Danny died. Never in my wildest nightmares did I expect that thousands more would follow. We knew in 2014 that failed drug policies brought us a toxic drug supply that is killing the people we love.

A must attend event! Censorship is the most frequent strategy of one-man regimes to silence dissident journalists. It is only the first step of assaults on advocates of free flow of information. Will be my first time exploring Twitter Space
