Journalists, experts, anybody who writes me.I’m reporting on the ground in Kyiv on what I see with my own eyes. There’re not so many of us. With other requests: assistance, contacts, etc. please, reach to those thousands Ukrainians who’re near their laptops in UA and outside.

Hag Pesah Sameah! For the Jewish community in Dnipro ( 8% of population ), this is the war for Justice. So I wish justice, but also return to peaceful life for the rabbis, who’re busy with saving people, the Jews who fight in UA army, and all the community. Photos:

“Signs of escalation to full-fledged world war aren’t yet evident. But what has become clear is that this war is the war of the worlds. Now is the moment of truth for our whole world. “Z” is the end of the alphabet, a hollow symbol, followed by nothing– no eternity, just emptiness”

By the best UA philosopher Cherepanyn:Putin faces an impossible task:how to rule forever. Like Kai from The Snow Queen who can’t spell “eternity” from pieces of ice. All Putin can fashion from the pieces left after the USSR are letters “W”A”R” and now “Z” project-syndicate.org/commentary/put

The Russian media became instrumental for waging this war. In Yahidne, near Chernihiv, Russian troops, who misbehaved and forced 370 ppl to stay in the basement for a month, explained their actions by reading this Komsomolskaya Pravda special issue on “Why Putin had no choice”

Zelensky does what he is expected to do,he didn’t change substantially. Many would disagree,I’d claim,at war, being a good human with the key value of human life is more important than professionalism.Humanism is Zelensky biggest strength. It was considered out of date in politics

Fascinating to tag along with @anneapplebaum and @JeffreyGoldberg to interview Pres Zelensky. I used to wonder how he would deal with politics. I underestimated him and his profession: actors understand people and truth. Satirists get politics. It’s good training for the top job twitter.com/anneapplebaum/…

The warship Moscow was the one which was told to fuck off by the UA boderguards at Zmiinyy island.Ironically it sank yesterday, when the Ukrainian Post issued this stamp. They line of ppl to buy it was like a sociological survey: from elderly to youngster, pensioners, professionals

Russia now admits the Moskva, the flagship of the Black Sea fleet has sunk. State media says it happened when they were trying to tug the damaged vessel back to port. The report is remarkably economical about the provenance of the damage.

There are reasons to tell those Dalai Lama books were given to the soldiers as part of their military kit. Yet it’s quite weird to find that. Villagers complained, guys from Tuva were extremely rude and couldn’t handle alcohol properly, something they searched for all the time

Soldiers from Tuva - Buddhist (and the poorest region, where Shoigu comes from)of Russia were based in Yahidne, near Chernihiv. They kept 370 villagers in the basement of the school for 1 months not letting them out.Books of Dalai-Lama together with military brochures are everywhere

This is Ukraine. There are a lot of symbols of this war, but this is the dearest for me. Niko Nazarenko drew those Ukrainians - railway, construction, rescue, communal workers, doctors, chefs, artists, policemen, bakers, military, sportsmen who defend Ukraine for the last 50 days

Terrific and nuanced journalism by about the life of occupied villages near Chernihiv, but first of all Russian soldiers “morale”.
Quote Tweet
In the absence of moral direction from seniors, Russian soldiers made ethical decisions; they had agency. Some were shocked, and tried to help shield locals from worst of it. Too many of them chose evil. My dispatch from Yahidne, Chernihiv oblast. economist.com/europe/2022/04

“We’re not returning home, but regrouping to fight in Donetsk”, - soldiers from Altay told Volodya. They occupied Sedniv, Chernihiv reg, 70km from RU border, on 5pm Feb24. “Let our guys kill you there, if you survived here”,- Volodya answered, being able to turn anything to a joke

By chance 2 men I met in villages near Chernihiv lost their sons:the first was shot on the road during the evacuation, second - was a policemen. But one of Ukraines oldest towns comes back to life. Electricity is being repaired, water is still not available - stations were bombed

Turkish Bayraktar drones were so successful that Ukrainians made songs about them.Yet Putin won’t even dare to criticize Turkey, knowing Turkey—a middle size state—will fight back. This could be an argument why weakness provokes the Kremlin, strength deters

I’m tired,so easily triggered, but I ‘m getting annoyed by articles on why Ukraine isn’t yet defeated. For us it’s simple: Ukraine is a functioning democracy with active pluralistic society. This is our strength. The world didn’t experience total wars against democracies to compare

And the authorities had managed to fix the railways and continue the evacuation! Passengers are safe, and those 3 trains are driving. People were not heart.

🇺🇦 authorities were afraid to publicize evacuation spots in the Donbas fearing 🇷🇺 air strikes. It sounded inhuman to bomb such places. Today railways near Barvinkove were bombed, stopping 3 trains from Sloviansk,Kramatorsk,Lyman. More warnings in my piece theguardian.com/commentisfree/

What we'll do next year with "The aim of our project is to ensure justice: both in courts&the court of public opinion. Ukraine is the place where the suppressed will be remembered, where horror is made into meaning. For their freedom and ours"

As she lay dying in a North London hospital, my grandmother started to hallucinate scenes from her Ukrainian childhood. All around the ward she saw starving children, skeletal, collapsing in the long, white, strip-light corridors… time.com/6164810/ukrain

My best friends house near Kyiv was robbed by the Russian soldiers as every single house in their village. Apart from stealing PlayStation, creating a mess searching for money, they destroyed Hanna Arendt’s “The Banality of Evil”. They might not know what’s the book is about.

After Bucha we're obliged to defend Donbas. Me from Eastern Ukraine, where a colossal and maybe decisive battle is anticipated.I talked to both governors, visited hospital, and more. It's clear:in case of occupation locals would be treated worse than in Bucha

3) We know Russian troops are moved the Donbas, the battles there might be colossal. It’s tragic, painful but imminent. The West may partially admit: in Kyiv Ukraine has already won. We’re cautions. But demining, rebuilding, treatment in hospitals, investigations - are a new stage

2) Most of the Ukrainians do not search asylum elsewhere. Refugee programs are important for the most vulnerable, people like from Mariupol who have no place to come back, but defense and help with defense on the ground is the most important

There are still sirens, but less. There is a feeling of victory in the battle for Kyiv with Bucha, Irpin, other town paying the price for Kyiv. What’s important:1) it’s clear it happened not because of any pressure to Russia, but UA military. This could be the case for other towns

Our beautiful Kyiv comes back to live. Subway is to run, restaurants to open, least important check-points are removed to make traffic easier. Mayors asks ppl not to come at least for a week, but they return. Border police confirms more ppl come back then leave Ukraine now

They almost detained person fro having “History of Ukraine” text book. Every house in Ukraine has it. It really looks that many Russian soldiers are indoctrinated and believe in Russian propaganda, which was there for decades, at least 20 I remember myself.
