Though most of the general public watched the disaster after the fact, NASA had arranged for a satellite broadcast on TV sets in schools, as a teacher, Christa McAuliffe was on the shuttle. Many schoolchildren watched live, and remember it as a pivotal moment of their childhood.

The disaster occurred at 11:39 am, when most were at school or work, all major networks that carried the launch quickly cut away when the shuttle broke apart. CNN broadcasted the entire launch, but cable news was still a rarity for most households.
