    Students shouldn’t be saddled with debt and left to the whims of volatile markets 💰 It’s time for government and sector leaders to commit to an education system that is publicly funded, debt free and accessible to all

    It simply cannot be right to saddle students with tens of thousands of pounds worth of debt and then subject them to the whims of volatile markets and rocketing interest rates. Today’s news will leave those already repaying their student loans preparing for increased debt payments during a cost of living crisis and force others to consider whether a university education is worth the cost at all. On any level, this is a policy disaster. As today’s report from IFS makes clear, low earners are being hit particularly hard by this toxic system of debt and interest which punishes students for going to university. If ministers still wanted to resuscitate their levelling up agenda, sorting this mess out would be a good place to start. It’s time for government and those who lead our universities to admit that the status quo is broken and commit to building a higher education sector which is publically funded, accessible to all and debt free. That is the future both staff and students want

    UCU's has written to to condemn the decision to employ new academic staff on inferior terms & conditions with no access to sector standard pensions Plans for a two tier work force will negatively impact on student learning and must be stopped

    Vice chancellors used a once in a lifetime valuation to push through devastating pension cuts and staff are angry On 27 April, UCU members will meet to decide the next steps in this dispute

    A pink and purple UCU graphic featuring a quote from UCU general secretary Jo Grady commenting on USS pension ballot results. 'University vice chancellors should be under no illusion at how disgusted staff are at the attacks on their pensions. The cuts are unjust, unnecessary and with eight in ten staff voting in favour of strike action it is clear the anger has not gone away. ‘Whilst staff were keeping universities running during the pandemic, vice chancellors were using a once in a lifetime valuation of a pension scheme as an excuse to slash and burn. Our members are now set to lose tens of thousands from their retirement incomes. Sadly, despite 18 days of strike action, those that lead our universities – themselves on eye watering salaries - have demonstrated they simply do not care. ‘Our union will now be taking these latest ballot results to a special meeting of its higher education sector where members will discuss how they wish to use this new mandate for action.’
