Kitchen Design Ideas to Consider

While a full kitchen remodel is costly, you can implement some of these kitchen designs without investing a lot of money.

All-white kitchens. In decades past, all-white rooms tended to feel cold and uninviting. Today, the all-white trend for kitchens brings a crisp, clean feel to the space, and runs counter to the prevailing stainless steel trend of recent years. Homeowners can bring white into their space by painting walls. If you already have white appliances or a white countertop, don't be afraid to take it step further.

Cabinets. Upper kitchen cabinets are being replaced with open shelving, giving homeowners a place to display decorative items and/or to enhance the area’s open feel.

Countertops. Granite countertops have dominated the kitchen scene for a while and remain quite popular. A more practical, durable option is gaining some of the market: quartz. A quartz countertop lasts longer, resists chipping and cracking and isn’t porous. That means it doesn't need to be sealed, won’t take on stains as easily and is very easy to clean.

Pops of color. With neutral tones (like white, gray and antique white) for the kitchen, designers are bringing in small pops of color through lighting or updated backsplashes. You can also place decorative items throughout the kitchen for a little contrast and color.

Technology. Homeowners are quickly adopting technologies to save in the kitchen. Touchless faucets, once reserved for commercial settings, are now in residential kitchens, and energy-efficient appliances encourage hot-water and energy savings.

Universal design. As more Americans plan to age where they are now, they're changing their kitchen design with the future in mind. Universal design works now and when eyesight, mobility and other physical abilities become limited. A few related innovations include lower dishwashers and refrigerator drawers.

Window coverings. Consider using sheers to add color. Window sheers offer a light, airy, open feel and seem to bring more of the outdoors into the kitchen.

There's no shortage of innovative kitchen designs. Choose some tips that fit your budget, or give your tired kitchen a complete overhaul. Either way, with some fresh paint, new window coverings or shelving, you can update your kitchen.
