Profound coda to the House hearing and new report on sweeping school book banning from : “Books saved my life.” She referred to reading as a young person, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” and realizing she was not alone in experiencing abuse.

"If we are going to have a conversation about banning books, then I say that conversation is long overdue. Let's have it. But it must include ALL books. If we are going to ban books for being too truthful, than surely we must ban those books that distort, or omit, the truth."

Bridges is an American icon-- why would these books not belong in our schools? The truth is there hasn’t been a good reason to ban them. But they’ve been banned by irregular, opaque, biased processes that may violate students’ 1A rights.

Third, in TX: THIS IS YOUR TIME by Bridges was on a list to “investigate” in TX schools, put out by a politician. It was pulled from library shelves in North East ISD, just for being on that list.

It’s shocking these books were banned. As we discuss in Banned in the USA, out today, the major free speech concern in schools is the way in which books are being banned. Schools are supposed to follow processes, not issue ad hoc bans on lists of books.

RUBY BRIDGES GOES TO SCHOOL - a kids’ version of her story - was included in a challenge in TN. The book was kept in the curriculum, but the challenge itself speaks to the ways that books about Black historical figures have been targeted across the US.

Author and civil rights leader Ruby Bridges is testifying at today’s hearing. Three books about her have been targeted in the spate of book banning in PA, TN, and TX. Two were banned. These 3 books tell us a lot about the current spate of book banning.

"...41% of the banned titles had protagonists or prominent secondary characters of color, 22% directly address race and racism, and 33% explicitly address LGBTQ issues. So though that’s not a majority, that’s a lot of where the action is."
