Using Plugin Favorites on WordPress.org

If you have a free account on WordPress.org, you can mark plugins as favorites. What you can do with those favorites inside your own WordPress admin is AMAZING. You need to have a WordPress.org account to use plugin favorites – watch this workshop to learn how to register a free account.

Howdy folks, welcome to another HeroPress Tip of the Week. This week, we’re going to talk about a cool feature of the WordPress plugin management system, and that’s favorites on WordPress.org.

The coolest stuff is going to be near the end of the video, so stick with me, because this is pretty neat.

So the first thing we’re going to do is go to WordPress.org and click on ‘Plugins’. And then up here in the top right, you’ll note you can register or login. If you already have an account, go ahead and log in.

And then, let’s go back the homepage. Let’s go back to Plugins again.

And once you have an account, you have a profile page. And here’s mine. And some information contribution history activity, plugins, favorites. Favorites – that’s where we want to see.

So these are plugins that I have favorited on wordpress.org. And I have quite a few. That’s easy to favorite them. Let me show you how that works.

Go to any plugin. We’ll pick this five star restaurant menu. And right here next to download is a little heart and you hover over it, it beats when you click it.

Now it’s favorited. That’s it. That’s all there is to it.

I’m going to unfavorite t because I don’t want it really on my list. But these are all plugins that I have done that to.

And for a while, I couldn’t quite figure out the real value of doing this maybe indicate that I liked it or something.

But then one day, I was installing plugins. And I went to ‘add new;’. And I noticed right here: ‘Favorites’ option. And you can put in a WordPress.org username, it says yours but you can enter anyone’s and get favorites.

And these are all my favorites. This is the same content as what you see here…here. And so it’s easy to find the plugins that you want to use regularly.

Or there are a few on this list that I can never remember the name of even though I like them a lot.

And I can always come here and find them. There’s ‘Edit Author Slug’, ‘Export Featured Images’ – all these are just all my favorites.

So it’s really cool to be able to favorite plugins on WordPress.org and then access them inside your WordPress install.

Now a cool thing about these favorites is that they’re not private, they’re public. So you can go to anybody’s profile.

Let’s go to Matt. Oh, too many T’s. so there’s Matt and we come down here and there his favorites, he only has six.

You can come over here…and there they are, you can just install them that way too. So if somebody has curated a great list that you’d like you can simply put in their username and get it easily.

And that’s really all there is to it. I just wanted to be able to show you how you can leverage the favorites system on WordPress.org to more easily manage your own plugins.
