A24 was launched in August 2012 as a film distribution company based in New York City by Daniel Katz, David Fenkel, and John Hodges.[1] [2] Its first film, A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III , was released on February 8, 2013. That same year, the company entered multi-year distribution deals with DirecTV Cinema and Amazon Prime .[3] [4] In 2016, three films distributed by A24 the previous year received seven Academy Award nominations: Amy won for Best Documentary Feature , Ex Machina won for Best Visual Effects , and Brie Larson was awarded Best Actress for her performance in Room .[5] [6] Also in 2016, A24 became a production studio, fully financing its first feature film, Moonlight , in a partnership with Plan B Entertainment .[7] The film was released to critical acclaim and won three Academy Awards from eight nominations, including Best Picture .[8] [9]
In 2018, the studio financed and released Ari Aster 's Hereditary , which became its highest-grossing film at the box office with $81 million.[10] That same year, A24 produced Eighth Grade , a coming-of-age story written and directed by Bo Burnham that was released to critical acclaim, tying with Greta Gerwig 's Lady Bird as A24's highest-rated film on Rotten Tomatoes with a 99% approval rating.[11] The studio later announced multi-year partnerships with Apple TV+ and Showtime for the digital releases of some of its upcoming films.[12] [13] In 2019, Uncut Gems became its highest-grossing film domestically with a $50 million gross in the United States.[10] In 2021, A24's Minari earned six Academy Award nominations.[14] In October 2021, Lamb became the first A24-distributed film to be selected as a country's official entry for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film .[15]
