Automattic

Design Director

At Automattic, we believe in making the web a better place. We’re the people behind WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Tumblr, Simplenote, WordPress VIP, and more, and we’re looking for Design Directors to keep the web free and open with us.

You’ll join a diverse design team and work closely with engineers, marketers, and customer support from around the world in a fully remote company to create products that make online publishing and commerce accessible to everyone.

What you’ll do

  • Support other designers during the phases of a project, from definition to development, contributing to design as needed.
  • Oversee and be accountable for the team’s output of high-quality design solutions that create value for our customers.
  • Contribute yourself as necessary and relevant to elevate the design craft.
  • Help other designers develop their craft, individuating areas of improvement and support with adequate mentorship whenever is needed.
  • Ensure the team uses efficient processes and tools.
  • Stimulate regular feedback cycles with thoughtful critique.
  • Build solid human relationships with your team, understanding each designer’s work.
  • Identify and appropriately respond to your team's high and low-performing designers. Recognize and celebrate individual and group wins.
  • Translate business and strategic goals into design tasks and facilitate collaboration with development teams.

What we are looking for

  • A deep understanding of the Product Design process and how to effectively deliver solutions that respect Business, Users, and Technical constraints.
  • Ability to effectively guide designers throughout the design process, with particular attention to usability and craft.
  • Experience leading a team of designers, ensuring they can create their best work, holding the team accountable to a high bar for quality.
  • Experience working with and managing a variety of stakeholders across the business.
  • Proven experience driving other designers through changes, facilitating adaptations with resilience towards multiple products and processes iterations.
  • Experience in coaching, developing, and inspiring other designers to collaborate towards common goals.
  • Excellent visual, written, and verbal communication skills — you are a natural storyteller.
  • Genuine interest or familiarity with our products and the open-source community.
  • Experience working in a fully remote environment (or excitement to try it!).

How we work

  • We’re kind to each other and our users – we strive to build a positive, supportive, and inclusive culture of cohesive teams focused on delivering value to our customers.
  • We have no set hours, or expectation that you’re online from 9 to 5. You create a schedule that allows you to get your best work done.
  • We travel sometimes to meet up and work together.
  • We welcome collaboration, and you can be involved in any discussion across our many communication channels. Here’s more about what we expect from ourselves.

About Automattic

We are the people behind WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Tumblr, Simplenote, JetpackLongreads, Day One, PocketCasts, and more. We believe in making the web a better place.

We’re a distributed company with more than 1900 Automatticians in 96 countries speaking 120+ different languages. We democratize publishing and commerce so anyone with a story can tell it, and anyone with a product can sell it, regardless of income, gender, politics, language, or country.

We believe in Open Source and the vast majority of our work is available under the GPL.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Automattic

We’re improving diversity, equity, and inclusion in the tech industry. At Automattic, we want people to love their work and show respect and empathy to all. We welcome differences and strive to increase participation from traditionally underrepresented groups. Our DEI committee involves Automatticians across the company and drives grassroots change. For example, this group has helped facilitate private online spaces for affiliated Automatticians to gather and helps run a monthly DEI People Lab series for further learning. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is a priority at Automattic, though our dedication influences far more than just Automatticians: We make our products freely available and translate our products into and offer customer support in numerous languages. We require unconscious bias training for our hiring teams and ensure our products are accessible across different bandwidths and devices. All Jobs Require

  • Great communication skills. We’re a distributed team, so frequent and clear written communication is a must.
  • Self-driven work ethic. You need to be a self-starter who loves taking initiative and seeing things through to completion.
  • Curiosity and the desire to learn. Our business is changing and growing fast, who knows what will be the skills of tomorrow? Flexibility is key.
  • Ability to Travel. We value those rare occasions when we meet our colleagues in person. Normally, we require 2–3 non-consecutive weeks of travel per year, usually by plane. Currently, company travel is limited, and travellers must be vaccinated. All travel is optional for now. We’re continuing to explore new, remote ways to stay connected.
