.xk is a temporary, unofficial country code top-level domain for the Republic of Kosovo,[a] assigned under UN Security Council resolution 1244/99.[1]

XK falls under the ISO 3166-1 "alpha-2 user-assigned codes", which include AA, ZZ, QM to QZ and XA to XZ.[2] This means it is reserved for private use and will not be permanently assigned to any entity – nor used as a country code top-level domain.[3][4] Thus, its use is unofficial and temporary, until Kosovo is assigned its own alpha-2 country code.

Notes[edit]

  1. ^ The political status of Kosovo is disputed. Having unilaterally declared independence from Serbia in 2008, it is formally recognised as an independent state by 97 UN member states (with another 15 recognising it at some point but then withdrawing recognition), while Serbia continues to claim it as part of its own sovereign territory.
