  • A truck crashes into a bus in Mexico killing up to 20 passengers.
  • Russian President Boris Yeltsin makes a rare public appearance at his Moscow holiday home chatting with Russian Prime Minister Victor Chernomyrdin.
  • Archaeologists believe they have found the heart of Robert the Bruce after uncovering an ancient casket in Melrose Abbey, Scotland.
  • Princess Diana is forced to pay cash for lipstick after her expired credit card was rejected.
  • The United States launches Operation Desert Strike against Iraq in reaction to the attack on Arbil.
  • The United States attacks Iraq for a second day with cruise missiles fired from two ships and a submarine in the Persian Gulf. Australia is one of few nations to support the United States bombardment of Iraq, while France and Spain decline support.
  • London police seize 105 white rhino horns in the biggest haul of its kind.
  • British Prime Minister John Major brings his wife Norma into the limelight as part of a new focus in the Tory campaign.
  • Two more bodies are discovered beneath the house of paedophile ring leader Marc Dutroux in Belgium.
  • The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia attack a military base in Guaviare, Colombia, starting three weeks of guerrilla warfare that will claim the lives of at least 130 Colombians.
  • Belgium mourns the death of two girls, the latest victims of an international paedophile ring as excavations continue in the search for 12 other missing children.
  • Benjamin Netanyahu breaks an election promise by shaking the hand of Yasser Arafat at their first talks.
  • The United States denies reports that more US missiles have been fired and several people have been killed in Iraq following international criticism of the missile attacks. Secretary of State Warren Christopher travels to Europe in a bid to rally support.
  • Hurricane Fran makes landfall near Cape Fear, North Carolina as a Category 3 storm with 115 mph (185 km/h) sustained winds. Fran caused over $3,000,000,000 in damages ($4.95 billion in present-day terms[1]) and killed 27 people, mainly in North Carolina. The name "Fran" was retired due to the extensive damage.
  • Ricardo López sends a package, containing an acid bomb, to Icelandic singer Björk with the intention to kill or disfigure her, and then commits suicide. The package is intercepted by the Scotland Yard four days later, before doing any harm.
  • A North Korean Sang-O-class submarine runs aground in South Korea. The crew are described as spies by the South Korean government and killed by the South Korean military.
